The Silver Spork

Not gonna lie this place is banging for the most part. Prices not so much, but man can they make an amazing hot chocolate. Of course I wouldn’t take a forty-​five minute metro ride to this place, but if you are just passing by take a little look in and see what you might like!

Very cute place in a great location (next to Eastern Market). They have pre-​wrapped sandwiches and salads, coffee and plenty of other fun goodies. We had a sandwich with a blackberry spread that was fantastic!

Danish was great and the coffee was decent. Pricey, but expected since it is on the hill. It’s a quaint little shop with nice employees. I only wish they stocked almond milk.

This used to be a Marvelous Market and boy do I miss those days. The staff is incredibly rude, the wait times are really unnecessarily long even if there are only a few people in front of you and they always seem to be out of everything. There are way better options right on the same street.

After a very bad experience at Port City down the block involving the worst coffee ever served to me at a coffee shop, I made my way down to the Silver Spork, where the barista made me an iced Americano to order. The contrast between the two places couldn’t be more stark, with the Silver Spork coffee being some of the best in DC. Couple that with an incredibly friendly barista and staff, and you’ve got a winning combination. Silver Spork’s now my coffee establishment of choice when I’m visiting Eastern Market, and I’m looking forward to my next visit.

I used to work right near The Silver Spork and it kind of became my go-​to lunch spot. The food is decent and the coffee is pretty great but the best part of this place has to be the friendly service and awesome patio.
I came in here most weekday mornings and the staff was always friendly and full of recommendations. They definitely know how to make coffee here and for a caffeine-​fiend like me that is always greatly appreciated! The prices were some of the best I’ve seen in DC as well.
They have an amazing patio with tons of seats, tables, and fantastic people watching. I definitely spent many a lunch hour here enjoying the sun. All in all, The Silver Spork is a solid option, but lacks any real pizazz.

As far as atmosphere, this café was a bit eclectic. They feature a lot of different prepared food and other items, some of which seemed a bit random. While the offerings looked fine, they weren’t anything too original.
As far as beverages go, I ordered the Mayan Hot Chocolate and they were out of it. My regular hot chocolate was passable, though it could have been neater looking. I also had a croissant, which was decent, but nothing remarkable. Frankly it could have been a little softer and more buttery.
The café has completely inadequate amount of seating inside, but there is ample seating outside, and we opted to sit outside at a table since it was fairy nice out.
Overall, I’d probably just as soon go to a Starbucks for a beverage, but if you want some nicer prepared food options, this might be the place to go.

Wasn’t that impressed with my latte from here or my croissant. They were fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. In my view, there are other places in DC with better coffee, lattes, and croissants.
The place is super convenient though, so if you need a cup of coffee, and you are near Eastern Market, it’s worth a visit.
Try the salads here. I was very satisfied with the Kale Caesar Salad, which is made up of fresh kale, dried cranberries, and tahini parmasean dressing, and would go back just for that. Who knew something so simple could be so delicious? It’s healthy and filling.

This place is so close to being great, except for two stupid but major issues:
1. The servers who work the earlyish morning shift are absolutely lovely, friendly middle aged women. They seem to be replaced around midday by lazy, surly staff. I apologize but note that they are Black and overweight only so that their managers can identify who I’m referring to and do something about it. Every single time I come in while they are working I feel like I have to apologize for bothering them at the counter to order or dare ask a question about the food. If they are even at the counter and not just leaning against some random part of the store playing on their phone. The woman is worse than the man, she is openly rude while he just seems lazy. PLEASE get rid of these people or do some serious training.
2. There is very little sitting room inside what is otherwise a large space. A few narrow counter spaces, and a few small tables jammed in amongst a head scratchingly enormous amount of random upscale food-​related items. I can’t tell if they are trying to be a coffee shop/​deli (you do this so well!) or a packaged specialty foods and gift store (why?!). This is less of an issue during warmer months when they have lovely patio seating, but this time of year you are almost always out of luck or uncomfortable amidst endless combinations of cocoa and tea to gift if you try to eat in.
All of that said– the espresso based drinks are solid, and they have by far the best pastries and bakery items in the area, so its worth a grab and go.

Authentic. Quirky. Cool. Those three words capture the feel of spork to me. How can you not love a place that specially makes a coffee and sandwhich of the day. That within itself is fun and upbeat. Most importantly for me was the people and climate. Folks that work here aren’t afraid to hold a conversation with you and help you make a purchase decision.
I had a latte. It was yummy. I so wish they had more seating. This is more of a get and go kinda place, because the space is small. Nonetheless, this is my kinda place.

Stopped in for sandwiches based on other Unilocal reviews and we were not disappointed. Sandwiches were fresh (even though pre-​made), staff was very friendly, and the outdoor seating was a treat. Gave four instead of five stars only because it is a bit pricey. Having said that, I know we will go back — easy one-​stop shop to put together an awesome picnic or food for a road trip.

The Silver Spork is one of the hidden gems of Eastern Market. It has a really nice patio and you can buy drinks (including beer and wine) inside and drink them outside on it. The patio is always shaded and usually much cooler than the surrounding area. Beer selection isn’t huge but it is interesting and it rotates, including some obscure bottles. They have a $ 2 uncorking fee, but it is still a really reasonable price for a place to get a drink. One additional peeve is that the 750’s often don’t actually have price tags on them, and so I don’t know how much the beer I want actually costs.

Beautiful, classy-​feeling, and very vegan-​friendly! Sells mock chicken salad, soymilk, hummus, dark chocolate, and more. Over-​priced, but so is everything in Eastern Market.

Great place to stop in when you’re at eastern market with your out of town friends. Good selection of breads, pre-​made sandwiches and salads, and also all sorts of condiments and randoms (mcclures pickles YAY!) Coffee shop meets gift store meets grab and go food counter meets bakery.

This place is an upscale mini-​grocery that also has pastries and take-​out sandwiches, which are made fresh on-​site in the morning but are not made to order. The sandwich I had was high-​quality even though I picked it up around 8 p.m. on a week night when I was wandering around Eastern Market. Have not tried the coffee or baked goods. I’ll be back.

So my very posh British friend claims to be a tea and crumpet connoisseur of sorts and we stopped by this place while shopping at Eastern Market on a Sunday. Apparently he was completely arrested by the name of this little bakery and HAD to go inside.
They don’t serve crumpets here, which was not surprising, but the pies were delicious and so was my coffee. The free refills were better! Also the little patio outside makes for great people watching, especially on a busy weekend at Eastern Market. They do have a condiments section, but considering that you’re literally right by a farmers market, I don’t see why anyone would want to buy preserved food at that time.
This place has more real estate value than the actual stuff they make — not to say that it’s bad, it’s pretty good — but the fact that they are strategically located right across the flea market area makes this a perfect spot to take a little break from walking around.

We walked in to check it out and it appeared to be one of those Blah, blah sandwich shops… But no!!! They offered FRESH ITEMS! I mean really fresh! There is a company that lots of restaurants use called Sysco. They pre-​cook items, freeze and or package them to be sent out to restaurants. «Ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat»!! I saw simple grilled chicken salad… the chicken breast was not perfectly form but FRESH!!! You can see that a person vs a machine/​slicer was used. That’s a good thing in my book!
Homemade soup selections rotate from Minestrone, Turkey Chili, Split pea and more! you can purchase ready made sandwiches, wraps and even dinners! i did see a Curried chicken dinner here But the portions are a bit on the small side! at 200lbs, I would have to eat two!
I was here for wine, cured meats and cheese but he one thing that struck me as odd was a surcharge… 22oz bottles of beer ($ 2.00) and bottles of wine ($ 3.00) This surcharge is covering the cost of consuming the products on the premises. I saw a .375L bottle of Conundrum for $ 10… an average price for 1 ½ … Oh! Lets add a surcharge! No servers were here so I guess this is a way to motivate them to clear off the table!

Coffee refill & spinach cheese quiche
A relaxed and comfortable spot to replace Marvelous Market. I am a fan of their reasonably priced Mayorga coffee. The sandwiches, meals and pastries look very fresh and inviting. My new favorite spot when I need coffee after Water Aerobics.

Great coffee drinks, baked goods, and prepared foods. Yes, Eastern Market is right next door where there is already an abundance of food options. But if you’re looking for a café to sit down and relax, I recommend The Silver Spork’s coffee and cakes.

This local, independent shop recently opened in the former Marvelous Market location, and it’s pretty much the same as it was under the Marvelous name. They stock gourmet food items, prepared sandwiches and salads, local Mayorga coffee, muffins and breakfast pastries, and fresh baked goods such as the beautiful buttery rustic apple pie I recently picked up for dessert. The staff is as helpful and friendly as ever, and the clientele and atmosphere is relaxed and comforting. To elaborate on the pie — thick, buttery crust made from simple ingredients (flour, butter… I think that’s it), and a wonderfully rich filling, loaded with fresh slices of apple. I will definitely be back, prompted by the fresh baked goods and the added satisfaction that I’m shopping local.
