True Value Hardware On 17th

Everyone who works here is very nice and you are helped as soon as you walk in the door. I often come here without a specific purpose & leave with odd and ends I didn’t even realize I needed (this is a good thing). They have a good selection of housewares, tools & basic technology supplies.

Nice to have a real hardware store in the neighborhood. The staff are knowledgeable and accommodating. I stop here fairly often and always find what I’m looking for.

Let me preface this with: I know nothing about being handy.
I came into True Value last Saturday looking for a drill because my apartment has concrete walls. The lady at the counter was very helpful — not only did she find me screws, a drill, and drill bit, she told me HOW to use everything. Very grateful and fool proof! Now I actually have paintings on my walls!

I’ve been here many times for random odds and ends. Most recently, I needed slats cut to put under my mattress on my bedframe. Prices were reasonable, I was helped immediately upon arrival, and the whole process was efficient. Wood was cut to exactly the dimensions I needed, and I was able to park right behind the store (there are hidden spots!) and throw the wood in the back of my shagin wagon.
Great overall experience and definitely recommend this place for all but the most involved hardware projects.

Other hardware stores are fine for some things. But, if you need expert advice or supplies for some home project, this the ONLY place to go. This is the only hardware store I know that produces duplicate keys that actually work.

This is a throwback to real hardware stores. First, it has both a hardware store and a less apparent home-​wares store on the other side. Second, they actually can answer questions and suggest things that work. Third, I’ve never gone in there and not gotten something that will do the job (which I can’t say about the big box stores.) And fourth, it is deadly convenient — no schlepping out to the hinterlands every time I need something.

Great staff, very helpful. This store has anything that you’ll need for minor home fixtures. Their return policy is very accommodating as long as you have the receipt. If you don’t have the receipt, make sure don’t open the item… they’re willing to give you store credit the current price of the item. Friendly staff.

This hardware store is great! The people are so helpful, patient and personable. It’s also amazing what crazy amount of supplies they have fit into the given space!
Also, it’s rare you find a shop so willing to accept returns.
My only criticism is that they close fairly early for a city filled with people who have 9 – 6 jobs.

These guys are always so helpful. I’ve gotten keys copied, bought herbs/​plants, and asked them a ton of questions. They are always courteous and have what I need!

The staff here are super helpful and friendly. I have also been to Logan Hardware nearby, which is fine, but the staff at True Value on 17^th are much more knowledgeable in my experience.

This is a great hardware store with a real personal touch. I needed to drill some tiles and had to pick up a special tile/​glass drill bit. They had what I needed, the clerk told me how to use the bit (slower is better) without my even asking, the project was a complete success!
Thus is s well-​stocked hardware store that is special. It’s one of those stores that has lots of special items… one of a kind type things. I’m excited to come back and explore more!

I came in there, like an idiot, looking for anchored screws to hang a floating shelf.
The guy (with a pearl type earring): «What kind of wall are you putting this into?»
Me: «The kind you need that stud finder for.»
Guy: «Does it come with screws?»
Me: *doesn’t realize he’s talking to me*
Guy: «Does it come with screws?»
Me: «Oh.me.I’m sorry. I am acting so spacey.»
Guy: «It’s OK. It doesn’t matter how we get there. The end result matters.»
So he found me my anchors, my screws and some painter’s tape. Also they let a dog come in the store and they had treats for her. So that’s an extra star.
ALSO, they rent drills, just fyi.

Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. If I have a random issue or am not sure what I need, they usually can talk me through it. Unfortunately their prices can’t compete with Amazon but still, they are very helpful.
Due to their size they don’t have EVERYTHING you could need. If you need something obscure or want a variety of options, go online or to Home Depot. However if you need help with something generic, definitely stop by!

They have magicians working behind the counter that solve every single one of your problems. Or tell you how you can easily solve it yourself. Also, I’ve wandered in for some of the most random things and they somehow MAGICALLY have it in stock. For example… just found washi tape there last night. It’s a tiny shop thats chock full of anything you could imagine. If they don’t have it, the home goods store above them probably does.

I’ve patronized this, my neighborhood hardware store, for years, and the guys there have always been terrific. But this week they really outdid themselves.
I needed 15 pieces of glass cut for a picture framing project – all different sizes, ranging from 8×13″ to 17×20″.
The fellow who was helping me took my list of sizes upstairs, I assumed to get me a total price (he’d already told me the price of the largest piece). To my surprise, he’d already started cutting the glass, thinking l’d wait to take it with me. Instead I said I’d come back and get it the next day. When I did, I was handed a very nice package that I could walk home with. The glass was perfectly cut, each piece labeled by size, and beautifully packed. And the cost was just $ 66. Amazing.
A unique experience you’ll only find at a wonderful old-​fashioned neighborhood hardware store like this one!

Great little hardware store tucked away. I had decided to replace my shower head, and realized I needed a bigger wrench.
I was really surprised and very glad to find this place right in the middle of AdMo/​Dupont area– was afraid I would have to somehow make my way into one of those giant Home Depots that they only build in the suburbs to get the right tool.
This place is packed with goodie and anything you want. The woman who helped me was very knowledgable and sort through all the options of tools that would work.
They also have an adjoining home goods section, where you can pick up random things household things (like picture frames), without having to head out to a Target in the burbs or overpaying at places like Macy’s. So convenient having this place walking distance from my house!

I’m in the middle of a move, so a hardware store run was way overdue. It became emergent when one of the casters broke off of the set of shelves I was using to store the supplies in the packing area. The screw was so bent that I couldn’t reattach it properly, leaving my organizing shelf too off kilter to be usable. And I was not optimistic that they would be able to find a replacement, as these sorts of parts are usually custom and not stocked by most hardware stores. But this place has just about everything, so I figured I would give it a try.
The service here is attentive and friendly. If they see you wandering around by yourself, they will check in to make sure you don’t need direction. I brought the broken caster with me, (which I recommend doing. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the variety and just grab something. Then you get home and realize that what you bought is twice as big as what you were trying to replace!)
So I showed it to one of the men working there and he spent ten minutes researching whether the part was available in their catalog, which it was not. This was already head and shoulders above the service you would receive at a big box hardware store. Being desperate, I asked if maybe there was a way to take the caster apart and get a new screw in there. I asked this thinking he would tell me how to do it. He actually went into the back and FIXED IT FOR ME, then wrote down all of the info I would need to order the part online,
These guys really know their stuff and will point you in the right direction to get what you need. Returns are also quick and easy. I recommend them highly.
They also have a cute home goods store upstairs, which is a godsend when you just need a small thing and don’t feel like schlepping down to Target or Bed Bath and Beyond.
So thanks for the amazing service and for making a stressful move go a bit smoother.

I lived just a few blocks from this place –always passed it but never stopped on. Ironically I am moving out of Dupont and have been here three times in the past week to get moving supplies! I never even knew there was a hardware store in Dupont until I was searching for moving boxes and I couldn’t find any good, large free ones in any stores. When I stopped at Safeway across the street one of the employees recommended I go to True Value and buy boxes there. When I walked in I was greeted automatically and a young lady came to my side and asked if I needed help. She grabbed the boxes, asked what other supplies I needed and rang me out. Afterwards she thanked me for my patronage and said ‘have a nive day’. I can’t remember the last time I heard that in my shopping experience.
I had the same experience when I returned a few days later, on my moving day. The employees were very friendly, made conversation and were very eager to help me. It reminds me of Rochester, where every store has a neighborhood feel and all the employees know you by name. I wish I had come to this store earlier in my Dupont living stint but glad I came here.
If you care about customer service with convenience, True Value is it. Thank you!

True Value Hardware On 17^th is the closest hardware store located to me, but yet its convenience factor is pretty much the only good part about it. Whenever you go to hardware store, you have that random requests that is normally hard to fulfill, but oftentimes I’m not able to find what I’m looing for
I will say that they have a lot of options for lights. At the Safeway or the CVS, there aren’t many options for different variants of lights, but this store has plenty.
One time, I needed a toilet seat, and they literally only had one option. And then, that option didn’t fit modern toilets, just a old seat that would fit the toilet at my grandma’s house. On one hand, I support the whole mom-​and-​pop aspect to this stores, but then, I have to go to Bed, Bath & Beyond to get a toilet seat that matched my toilet, which was incredibly easy to find at that store.
And I guess because they grew out of their traditional hardware store location, they expanded to a another location two stores down and have an upstairs full of housewares. The vibe is very much like going into a flea market, which is kind of random. Again, the selection here is very hit or miss.
At the end of the day, if you need a hardware store and True Value Hardware On 17^th doesn’t have it, then you can always go to Logan Hardware by the Whole Foods on P Street.

I love this store. I came in the other day and just started asking them for random solutions in my apartment.
Store staff, «Can I help you?»
Me, «Yes, I’m looking for something I can use to turn into a jewelry holder, tie rack, scarf holder. I don’t know what I’m looking for but I feel like you guys have it.»
They walked me all over the store until we found just the right thing. Helped me figure out how to make it — and I only spent nine bucks!
