U Street Organic Cleaners

They may say that they are organic, but they use very strongly scented products. They used these despite my clear instructions destroying my clothes. In addition, they are very expensive. Please be careful if you have allergies and use them, they make promises that they don’t respect.

Their hours say 7 am-​7pm 3 week in a row I go to get my clothes at 7 amd no one is there. 7:30 still no one there. time to go somewhere else

NOT «expert tailors» as they claim. The dry cleaning is fine, but I paid them $ 25 to hem my skirt. The hem is terrible — the thread is not flush with the fabric every few inches, so there are little loops of thread, and they literally hemmed wrinkles into the skirt. It’s impossible to iron them out, because the hem is what holds the fabric there. I’m obviously very upset that they ruined my skirt. I will not be going back there for any more alterations, and I’m going to find a new dry cleaning place as well.

Thorough, great quality and haven’t lost a thing. I am in town with a 25 person team for two months. UStreet was selected to provide dry cleaning and wash/​fold service pickup/​drop off in our Foggy Boston office. Three times a week. Don’t want to pay $ 4 for a pair of socks to be washed in a hotel or $ 30 for a suit to be cleaned. Heavy dry cleaning volume. I have done this in at least 6 major cities across America and UStreet is first entity that hasn’t lost/​damaged a thing (as of today) or gotten someone’s chonies in the wrong return wash/​fold bag. Plus their accounting/​receipt process is easy and simple for me to expense.

I’m really pleased with this place — they are super nice and do good work at a low price. I had two things altered, one to replace the lining of a coat, and I paid significantly less than I had expected. There are two places that do alterations across the street which I went to first and they were totally unhelpful — one insisted I make an appointment and come back later even though no one was waiting, and the other didn’t have any idea how much it would cost and told me to come back on a Sunday morning at 10 (?)? U St cleaners immediately gave me a price and a timeline for it to be done. I will be returning there next with a formal dress I need altered.

U Street Organic Cleaners is AMAZING! They have the most friendly staff, after going in once they were greeting me by name as I walked through the door.
I have gotten alterations done there and I couldn’t be more thrilled. They are quick with their turn around and the quality of tailoring is bar none the best I have found in the city. I would highly recommend using them for their tailoring service, you will not be disappointed!

They’re fine for dry cleaning, but don’t trust them for any alterations or fixes. I had a tear in my pocket and they charged me $ 13 to fix it, and it came undone about a week later. I took it in again telling them it came undone, and they wouldn’t fix it for free, they charged me again! And they didn’t fix the hem in my pants even though I paid for it, they had to take it back again and fix it, which made me wait several more days for it.

U Street cleaners is great. They did a great job cleaning my clothes and even fixed buttons without me asking. The customer service was great too. The staff is very friendly. I would definitely recommend!

U Street Organic Cleaners is the only dry cleaners I’ve used in DC. They’re more expensive than those cheap-​o places but there are some services that are worth a little extra to ensure that your clothes are well-​cared-​for. Embarrassing, but after rent, my clothes are probably one of the biggest line items in my budget. It’s worth making sure that investment is a long-​term one.
Like most places, it’s the little things that make me a loyal customer: I have a silk dress that I ripped the seam on a few weeks back and have continued to wear with safety pins (I realize this is contrary to the above, but I’m incredibly lazy and hadn’t had a chance to get it repaired). I sent it in with my dry cleaning and when I got it back, it had been patched. WIthout me even asking! And they didn’t charge me for it either.
I’ve moved away from the U St. area but will continue to use U Street Organic Cleaners.

I should caveat this review by noting that until a dry cleaner matches Zips’ prices they will never get 4 or 5 stars from me.
That aside, U Street Cleaners has proven an adequate substitute. They’re super friendly, decent turnaround time, and though more expensive than Zips, not what I would call unreasonable. They’ve also done a great job taking in some pants for me. So, yes, I endorse. But I miss paying $ 2 an item at Zips.

I’ve been a customer here consistently for two years. I use the store’s delivery service, and they come by once a week to pick up and drop off my clothes. There isn’t any extra charge for delivery, but their prices are not the cheapest. And if they run any specials, I’ve never heard of them. I can say they are dependable and they have never lost an item of my clothing. It’s hassle free and the service is consistent so that earns my loyalty. There’s been occasions where they singed the cuffs of my shirts (probably during pressing). I pointed out the issue and while they did not offer me compensation of any kind, the problem has not recurred. I’ve also used them for replacing buttons and hemming. Again, not the cheapest (about $ 15 for hemming) but they do a decent job.

In just the past 5 years, I’ve lost several items of clothing to the grim reaper of bad dry cleaning so you can understand if I’m extra careful about choosing cleaners. After calling 5 different cleaners in the area AND Zips, I decided to give U Street Cleaners a try because of their organic cleaning method and new customers get 15% off their first visit. I should make a point of saying that there are 2 other cleaners closer to my house and U Street Cleaners is out of the way for me.
I dropped off 3 pieces of clothing: a beaded silk top, a work skirt, and white a cardigan. The top and the skirt turned out fine, but I found very obvious brown and yellow stains on my sweater. They resembled grease marks and I was certain they weren’t there when I had dropped off the sweater. (I do love to eat, but I’m not such a slob that I would manage to drop greasy food from my right shoulder all the way down to the front of myself!)
The two ladies behind the counter first tried to argue that I had dropped it off in that condition. As I persisted how that wasn’t possible, one of them changed the story and said it was the cleaning material that stained my sweater as she was trying to work out some of the stains. Not only that, the material enhances the stains that it cannot get rid of, especially on white. WHAT?! If she knew the cleaning material stains white material, why would she use it on my white sweater?! By that point, I was beyond livid.
Since I was ready to cause a scene in front of other customers, they FINALLY agreed to take it back to re-​do. I was nervous and paranoid that they might completely destroy my sweater, but I got it back all nice and pristine – the way it was supposed to be done the first time around!

I was staying in this area temporarily and needed a reliable dry cleaner. Found these guys on Unilocal and couldn’t have been happier. Reasonably priced and always flexible on timing. And — when the job suddenly shipped me out of town on a moment’s notice, U Street Cleaners performed an absolute miracle of dry cleaning for me without batting an eye. Highly recommend them.

They do a good job but they are unjustifiably expensive. I took 9 shirts and 13 other pieces (pants, sportcoats, skirts, dresses, etc.) to get cleaned and the bill was about $ 115. In contrast, Zips (which admittedly is a pain in the ass trek up Ct. Ave.) is a full $ 75 (that’s right, seventy-​five dollars) cheaper for the exact same clothes. Now I am not about to say that an organic cleaners in the U Street neighborhood shouldn’t be more expensive than a budget cleaners in Van Ness, but a full three times the price? That’s just shitting away money. No thanks.

What’s the price of cleaning organic?
Apparently, about double the cost and half the service. While the owners are always informative, friendly and very quick with their service, I can’t recommend this business.
Two times I had a pair of slacks completely stretched out at the waist band (and nowhere else) when the material itself was a simple non-​stretchy cotton-​wool blend. Now, I didn’t lose 15 pounds overnight, let alone only in the waist, but they tried to convince me nothing had ever happened like that before so it must have been me. I would imagine ladies’ slacks are a fairly common item, so I would have hoped they had gotten the kinks out of that process. Future customers beware.
Maybe try carbon-​offsetting or switching laundry detergents if you are worried about environmental concerns. Ruining pants at premium cost is just not worth it on my limited budget.

Being new to the area, I was on the search for a good dry cleaners and I am happy to say that U Street Cleaners is in the running.
I went there to get my wool pea coat cleaned and they did a fabulous job. It came back smelling really nice (not that weird smell some other cleaners have). The staff was friendly — like, happy to see me like we were old neighbors-​friendly) and their prices seemed competitive. A bonus that they are right around the corner from my house.
It seemed like they were genuinely happy to have my business, which seems rare at cleaners sometimes. I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to make a return visit.

I dropped my clothes off there for the first time last week, and boy was I impressed when I went to pick them up! Excellent service, and they really care about their customers and their customers’ garments. No harsh chemicals, friendly people, and my clothes came back looking better than I expected.
In short: they took better care of my clothes than I do! And if you’re a first time customer, make sure to print out the coupon on their website for 20% off!

I love them. Been using them for two years now. My concierge takes the clothes to them and they deliver them to my residence. Next thing I know is my clean clothes are on my closet hangers. The only thing additional they could do is use cedar hangers, but that’s asking too much… :-)
Outstanding work with alterations too. They fixed a Spyder suit after the velcro got ripped during a fall. Couldn’t tell the difference.

My dry cleaning comes back clean and pressed with care and the service is always friendly and quick. Same day is never an issue.
Guys, you know how at most cleaners your sleeves are over-​pressed and they iron-​in more wrinkles? Well that never happens here, a pet peeve of mine.
Side note: I can vouch for a few broken buttons but I believe the last time that happened was in 2003, so all’s forgiven. I simply stopped taking in shirts with «fancy» buttons, they will replace most buttons if they are common. This happens at a lot of cleaners.
