Description

Specialties

Zeke’s Coffee of DC specializes in organic, fair trade, and sustainable Arabica beans, and we feature dozens of single-origin coffees from and create our own custom blends, roasting in 10 pound batches.

At Zeke’s, we use a fluid bed coffee roaster. Invented by Mike Sivetz, a physicist from Oregon in the 1970’s, fluid bed coffee roasters use hot air to create a fountain of coffee beans. This technique roasts more quickly and uniformly than a conventional drum roaster. We roast to temperature, giving us a more consistent product. Chaff escapes the roast chamber easily, leading to cleaner tasting coffee with more distinct regional flavors.

We roast in small batches. It guarantees freshness. It keeps us honest. Our roaster holds 12 pounds of coffee, compared to the 150 pounds that a standard roaster holds. Because of this, we put more time, more labor, and a little more of ourselves into each bean. You can taste the difference.

History

Established in 2005.

Zeke’s Coffee is a family-owned and operated company founded in Baltimore, Maryland. Zeke’s got their start at the Baltimore Farmers’ Market in 2005 and opened a retail space in 2006. They began selling at farmer’s markets, coffee shops, restaurants and specialty grocers in the Washington-metro area in 2008, and opened the DC roastery in 2013.

By focusing on a wide variety of fresh roasted coffees from small farms around the world, Zeke’s has built a dedicated base of customers and won numerous awards. They continue to roast in small batches at their three coffee roasteries, based in the communities that we serve.

Business Owner

After more than 12 years working on food policy in Washington, DC’s non-profit sector, John joined the family business — roasting coffee. Having worked with the family’s original Zeke’s Coffee in Baltimore since 2008, they decided to spend less time on I-95 and more time roasting coffee, opening Zeke’s Coffee of DC in 2013.
