Hansen’s Dairy Moo Roo

If you find yourself passing through Waterloo, you definitely need to stop by Moo Roos! Light, creamy, fresh, delicious ice cream is what you’ll get here. There’s a nice variety of flavors to choose from, all which have a unique taste. Don’t be shy to ask for samples, as the staff will happily hand them out!

They sell ok milk and milk based products. Unfortunately no grass fed cows provide any of the milk, so it’s kind of bland. Amazing waffles and somewhat bland homemade ice cream. It’s extremely cold in the café, so bring a coat, even in the summer. Friendly staff

This place has great homemade ice cream and local dairy products. They also have local meats and cheeses. Great prices and friendly staff. Highly recommended.

My new favorite place in Waterloo! Local, organic milk, butter, eggs, honey, bread, meats and delicious ice cream! I have been really into cooking organic, and this is the perfect place for sourcing some organic ingredients for baking and cooking in the waterloo area. Prices are a little bit more than your conventional store, about $ 1 more for a half gallon of milk… BUT with the membership card (basically a prepaid card) you get a discount and milk, ice cream and butter are the same price as the grocery store. Friendly staff too!

This great little place knows their dairy. Many locals have this as a «go to» place to get their dairy, esp milk. It also a great place to get a sweet treat, with a dozen small batch ice creams available in assorted cones and bowls. They even have a shelf for other local goods like salsas and such. Small businesses like this are I increasingly rare, so check this one out.

Woo Hoo for Moo Roo! This unassuming little ice cream shop may be the most adorable place to stop for ice cream. The young ladies behind the counter gave us a little background on the «story» behind the shop logo outside… because at first glance, it is a bit odd. It’s a wallaby eating an ice cream cone with a milk calf in its pouch?! However, we learned that this ice cream shop is owned and run through Hansen Dairy Farms… and the dairy farm also raises New Zealand wallabies. The Hansen owners actually make the ice cream which is made from their dairy farm in Hudson, IA. So when they say it is homemade, they ‘aint kiddin! My friends had the coffee flavor, rocky raspberry something or other, and a choc chip mint in nice sized but not those whopping oversized waffle cones. We meandered around the place to see all the unique items they sell: cheese curds, ice cream sandwiches, farm meats, and a very popular item besides the ice cream: fresh farm milk (you have to shake these gallons of milk because it is THAT fresh!) – at least a dozen people stopped in to the store while we were eating our ice cream to JUST buy the milk! In the open eating area there is a huge painted mural of what we assume to be the Hansen Dairy Farm, and on all the tables are these photo albums that you can browse. The photos are a hoot, as they are just full of random family photos that we figure are the owner’s kids or grandkids – very cute. The only reason we (my friends collectively) gave it a 4 is that the ice cream was not THE VERY BEST we’ve ever had, but it was a sweet treat on a hot summer evening and we certainly ate ALL of our ice cream! Gotta’ head to this place… it’s quite an IOWA treat!
