A1 Low Cost Mover

If you’re looking for a good mover, KEEP LOOKING because this has to be one of the worst companies throughout the city of Houston.
Reading through other reviews, I can’t believe this company does their dirty deals and business on a daily basis. Like many before me, I picked this company based on their price. I was moving from a 1 bedroom duplex to a 1 bedroom apartment with very little furniture and knew it would be less than a 2 hour job. I scheduled my appointment with 12−2pm window and at 10am I receive a call stating the movers were at my door. I wasn’t home and was a little annoyed/​worried they wouldn’t show up again, but was reassured they would.
Side note: Reading other reviews about how they advertise under different names makes sense now because when I received a call they simply just called themselves «movers» and I was confused to why they would never state their business name… now it makes sense, they don’t even know who they are to each person!
By 1pm the crew came back and since I was on a budget to move I timed everything. It took the crew 15 minutes to move my belongings to their truck, although the truck was absolutely disgusting. I had just bought a new mattress and was horrified to find out they didn’t have furniture covers like I was told on the phone and my brand new mattress was thrown into a filthy truck with junk in the back. And the review before me is not exaggerating, the truck did not have a proper back gate and I too made sure to take down the license plate number in fear they were going to take off with my stuff.
Once arriving at my new apartment I was informed with all their hidden fees and double charging. I was told they would not unload my stuff until I paid first in cash. I picked my service based on price and made sure to state everything from how many boxes and pieces of furniture/​distance/​type of housing to get a price so was completely shocked to find I was told something different than what they given me.
I had no choice but to oblige and the movers began to unload my furniture from the truck. They managed to break my dresser and instead of saying sorry or taking responsibility for the damage one merely just said «You probably got it from IKEA.» So now I have a dresser that will need to be replaced with my next move and the constant reminder of how horrible of movers I had with every scratch and ding on other pieces of furniture as well.
I would NEVER recommend this service to anyone and would never use them again. This is one of the most unprofessional companies I have ever dealt with and learned my lesson when it comes to picking moving service. Don’t be fooled by their prices because they will scam you and you too will regret choosing them for your move!

This place was an epic failure to say the VERY least. I know this is lengthy, but please read on. If you don’t want to read it, then just know to NEVER hire these people.
On Wednesday, I contacted Wayne at the number I found on Google — 713.922.0252. He quoted me $ 59 an hour for two men with a $ 19 truck fee. This was significantly lower than other rates I’d found and he ensured me they were bonded and insured and convinced me to set an appointment. I was only moving my stuff to a storage unit less than a mile away, so the low truck fee was the best part. My keys needed to be turned into the apartment Saturday evening, so I scheduled his crew to show up from 8:30 — 9:30 on Saturday morning. He ensured me someone would call me when they were 30 minutes away from being there.
I received a call Saturday morning at 7:45 asking me if I had scheduled movers. Well, yes, I did. They then asked what time I wanted them at my apartment. I informed them of my appointment time and they said the earliest they could get out there was 12:30. I scheduled the cleaning service for 2:30 so while this would be cutting it close, I agreed.
12:30 rolled around and I called Wayne to ask the status and he said they had a few trucks break down this morning and now they would be not be able to get out there until 3:00. I was not happy at this point, but I understand this sort of thing happens so I rescheduled my cleaning service and waited.
3:00 came and I hadn’t received any communication so I called Wayne again. This time he said 5:30. I had already wasted my entire day waiting for them to show up and reminded him of my appointment with the cleaning service. I was able to reschedule my appointment with the cleaning service for 8 am the next morning, allowing me to get my keys turned into the office prior to opening.
5:00 rolled around and guess what? I had heard NOTHING. I called Wayne only to get a ‘we are gone for the day’ message and I sat there panicking and helpless. I called many more times and eventually Wayne answered. He then gave me every excuse possible as to why they weren’t there AND told me they couldn’t be there that day. The earliest would be the next morning, 8:30 AM and he assured me I would be their first move of the day. His final excuse was they had to move a helpless elderly lady and she needed more help than they originally thought. I’ll bet that lady’s appointment wasn’t for EIGHT AM and she hired you for the same reason I did — she couldn’t do it on her own! I am 8 months pregnant and equally as helpless, not that it matters at all — that is the purpose of appointments. He eventually gave in and said ‘You are right, I’ve failed you and I apologize.’ If I needed or wanted my ass kissed, he isn’t the person for the job. His way to appease me? Get this — he told me he had quoted me the $ 59/​hour for two men and his three man crew is usually $ 69/​hour. He would give me the three man crew for $ 64/​hour the next day. ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?!? He actually expected me to be happy with that after I’d wasted my entire day waiting on them with NO COMMUNICATION from their side. I (again) rescheduled with the cleaning service and was now definitely going to have to pay for an extra day at my apartment. Oh well, what could I do about it at this point?
SO, being 8 months pregnant and sleeping on the floor because all my stuff was ready to go, I wake at 8 AM expecting to get a phone call telling me the guys were on their way. They finally call at 9:15 and tell me they will be there in 45 minutes. So, they finally show around 10 AM, only 26 hours late. Jeez. The truck in which they arrive is not the same company I called, so I asked the guys. Ends up being one of those same guys moved me into this apartment even though I didn’t call the same company. Wayne uses many different companies to get his moves done, so all of his prior excuses were proven to be BS at that point. Regardless, the guys move the stuff and load it into the truck. It takes WAY longer than it should (the same reason I didn’t call the same company as before) and I then have them follow me to the storage unit.
He then tells me that they simply DOUBLE the amount of time it takes to load the stuff to come to the total. Also, they won’t unload my stuff from the truck until I pay them IN CASH only. DON’T YOU THINK THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN NICE TO KNOW WHEN I ORIGINALLY CALLED? Here I am thinking this move will cost be $ 300 with tip AT THE MOST and it cost me $ 500 dollars even with them being over a day late. It took them 3.5 hours to move the stuff into the truck and about 45 minutes to get it into the storage unit.
This was by far the most miserable experience I have EVER had with a moving company and I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. The stress, inconvenience, lies and flat out unreliability was more than anyone should have to deal with, let alone pay for.

Wayne is a total sleeze and there is a reason he won’t send a written contract, it is because he isn’t up front with his fees. The guys who actually showed up to do the move were nice but completely in experienced. They had a total of 5 moving blankets and I would have been cringing if I had been moving an entire house of furniture. I aggreed on 89 per hour and as the previous poster mentioned, they start the clock when you sign the papers then you are on the clock. They take the the time it costs to load the truck and then drive to your location and then they double that time to come up with the total price. I was only moving a few pieces so I went ahead and sucked it up, but I could certainly see how this place suckers people. My advice, is DO NOT USE this service.

My father contacted Wayne, with A1 Low Cost Mover, on my behalf, due to an online advertised Internet special the company was promoting. The advertised offer was 2 movers for $ 25 dollars an hour (which actually turned out to be, according to Wayne, a special just for 2 movers helping you pack only, although the add clearly read $ 25 per hour, for 2 movers to move you from one place to another). My father was then quoted, rather misquoted, a moving price from Wayne of $ 60 per hour, with a two-​hours minimum, for two moving men, and a $ 19.95 service/​truck fee. Wayne told my dad the total amount for using his company would cost us total: $ 139.95, which we agreed to. That was hardly the truth of the situation, come moving day.
On my move out day, the movers showed up a half an hour late. I was told they would be there by 7:30am, they showed up at 8:04am. Wayne ensured my father and me that the movers would be professional, and highly trained to get the job done in a quick, and concise manner. That was so far from the truth, I couldn’t believe it. First of all, when the guys showed up, one of them wasted 15 minutes of moving time, walking around my small apartment, asking me over, and over, again what was supposed to be moved on to the truck, even though I explained it very clearly the first, second, and third time he asked. While the one guy was «acting» really confused about what I was telling him to move on the truck, the other was explaining to me how the service worked, and then asked me to sign their contract. Now I understand why the one mover was «acting» confused, and stalling, just so he could distract me while the other mover got me to sign on the dotted line with out properly explaining to me how the service actually worked. I was told that the time I would be billed for started as soon as they show up at your door, plus how ever long it takes for them to pack up my things on to the truck, and get to the place where you are moving, in my case a storage unit.
I signed the contract, and then they started moving my stuff. All in all, it took them about 50 minutes to load my things on to their truck. With in those 50 minutes, I could tell the moving guys were getting anxious, seeing as things were moving along quite quickly, so one of the guys asked to use my bathroom. He used my restroom not once, not twice, but a total of five times. Seeing that he did that, the other guy asked to use my bathroom, too, he, only twice. I didn’t want to be rude or risk one of them having an accident in my apartment, so I let them use it. They would each take about 5 or 6 minutes in the bathroom, and now I know why. Again they were wasting time. Then, the guy not using the bathroom would ask me where his friend was, I’d say in the bathroom, and he’d say he couldn’t move my dresser because he needed the other guys help to do so, again, stalling, trying to add more time to the clock.
As they were moving my things, one of the guys was cussing up a storm, in my presence, while I was standing right there telling them what to move, (completely inappropriate, and unprofessional). One of them even asked me where his breakfast was, that if he was going to move my stuff this early in the morning, I should have provided them with breakfast. I then asked them to handle my things more carefully, especially lamps, boxes of picture frames, and my TV, which had I not asked them to handle those items with care, it seems like they would have just thrown in the truck with out a second thought.
We finally get on the road to my storage unit. They guys insisted on following me the whole way there, even though I gave them the address of the storage unit and directions. I didn’t think there would be any harm in them following me, until I realized it was because, that way, they could trail 5 to 6 car lengths behind me, again, stalling and wasting time, to add more time to the clock. They turned a 20 minutes trip, into a 40 minutes one, and we took the high way there. I literally had to drive at 40 mph on the Houston highway, as to not lose those guys; they were driving that slow, and that far behind me. I was worried if I lost them, that they would have never showed up to the unit with my things, and charged me even more for the move.
When we reached the storage unit, I waited for them to get my stuff off the truck. They said that they would not move the stuff off the truck until I paid them in full. I had my 139.95 in cash (because Wayne said the only way I was allowed to pay them was in exact change, cash only), ready to hand them when I was informed the total price for moving would cost actually me $ 202. This was an utter shock, and completely unexpected. It was then that one of the moving guys said to me that the total time charged is generated from the time they get to my apartment, plus the time it takes them to move, plus the travel time, and then that time is DOUBLED. The total moving and travel time to my unit was an hour and a half.
