Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel

Big open courtyard was rocking with a retirement party as we walked in! Cool open space for a get together, except they must have had fish on the menu cause it reeked of fried fish!
The rooms were super nice, not huge but nice. Separated into 2 rooms, tv’s in both rooms, small fridge, modern bathrooms, Decent view out the windows!
If your not going to stay downtown this might be a good spot to stay, for biz or with the fam.

Was able to check-​in day of at 11:30am and given a room, which was nice since I had to go to 2 hotels in 2 nights during my stay in the area (busy weekend, so hotels were full.)
Hotel set up is in an atrium, which provides a nice view from higher floors but causes screaming children to echo, as they were not in short supply the night I stayed. Room was clean, but as others stated had that slightly musty smell. Large bed and sofa recliner, decent layout. Bathroom was just the right size and clean as well.
As far as amenities go, there was a pool and fitness center. Strangely enough no hot tub. Must be a Sheraton thing, since I stayed at one several weeks earlier and experienced this? Restaurant at bottom atrium, bar area was closed during my stay and appear to be under some sort of renovation.
Service was mixed. Staff were well intentioned but I had breakfast included with my reservation and at check-​in but was not handed my comp card; I was instructed for it by the waitress in the restaurant during breakfast and had to get it from the front desk. Ordered room service and, while quick, the server seemed a little unenthusiastic (perhaps the end of the night?) Also, during breakfast I was accidently handed the wrong the receipt and this was promptly cleared up by the waitress.
Oh and Wi-​Fi cost money to use. Why? This is 2016.
Overall, not a bad place but has several spots that can be improved.

I have had 3 business trips to Iowa and this is always my go to spot. Nice executive lounge and good amenities. Very friendly staff and clean, fresh smelling (a big thing to me, I hate smoke smells in hotels) and shuttle service as needed.

My daughter and I loved our stay. We were there 2 nights. The entire staff was so nice along with the shuttle drivers. The room was clean and very comfortable.

Staff was great when we came in, cute waterfall in the lobby. And quiet for that great sleep you were looking for. Rooms were clean, and they have Starbucks coffee in the rooms.

As far as hotels go, this one meets my expectations for a Sheraton. I always enjoy staying at this chain, and this hotel was no exception. What was *TRULY* exceptional about my stay here was…
Yeah… you knew this was coming…
THE STEAK! Their sirlion is perfection. Seasoned minimally with just a tiny bit of salt, grilled medium-​rare. The beef was just delicious, perfectly marbled and juicy. The sides were no less ass-​kicking, especially the potatoes. Honestly, I’m a bit surprised to be as blown away as I am by how good the steak was, but just to make sure that it wasn’t a one-​off I ordered another one for lunch today. It was just as delicious as the one I had last night, and that’s saying something. So now I can comment on their consistency as well.
So yeah… looks like other people have had some crappy experiences here, but as far as I can say, maybe they just need to have a steak and calm the fuck down.

Though our room had a sort of weird stale smell, it was clean and spacious. Staff was helpful and the hotel was large. Best of all they only required a deposit for our small dog which was entirely reimbursed when she didn’t do any damage. I would recommend.

The room and staff were nice. The room did have a little bit of a musty smell but nothing too bad. The lobby area had a nice waterfall however that made for a humid lobby. There was a wedding and a baseball tournament going on and I could hear everything. Things did quiet down around 11pm.
Overall not a bad experience but will probably only be back when my work books the hotel here.

Worst experience ever! We are Sheraton preferred guests and stayed in another Sheraton just last week in Omaha and had a fabulous experience.
This week we are staying at the Sheraton West Des Moines for 5 nights.
Unfortunately, everyone that we have encountered that works at this hotel has been outwardly rude to us based on their preconceived assumptions about us staying here with a baseball team.
We asked to have a courtesy room or area for the players and families to use to congregate to stay out of the way of other guests although there are many common areas that have not been being used. Although we were accommodated for a short time, we were kicked out at one point in not a very nice way.
Today, my family and I came back to the hotel and decided to sit in the lobby area to eat our lunch and there were no other guests around. We were asked to not eat in the lobby and the gentleman who approached us was again not very friendly. We actually just looked at him for a minute wondering if he was kidding.
We have stayed at a lot of hotels being a family that likes to travel and that travels to play baseball and other sports. We have a choice in where to stay and unfortunately, based on our experience this week with the Sheraton West Des Moines we will not be choosing Sheraton in the future and we will be sharing our experience with the baseball and other families in our area that travel frequently with teams.

My Favorite Place To Stay in West Des Moines
I stayed at the Sheraton West Des Moines 5 times over a 12 month period while traveling on business. My accommodations were pleasant, but what made my stay exceptional was the staff at this hotel. Everyone from the shuttle drivers (who took me to and from the airport, and to and from work each day), to the concierge level staff, to the front desk team, to the restaurant and bar staff — made me feel welcome, anticipated my needs, made my stay delightful and removed the tedium from business travel.
Among the highlights for me were the hot breakfast on the concierge level, where Mo always managed to turn up the tea that I love, delicious salads and desserts in the Waterfall Grill, and genuinely friendly and helpful staff.
I don’t believe that my business will take me back to Des Moines, but if it does, this is absolutely where I will be staying.
Room Tip: Not so much about the rooms, but during the winter, the lobby can be a bit chilly. Definitely take…

Green Features: When I was there they had a great option where for each day I didn’t use housekeeping, I received a certificate that could be applied as a discount to purchase food and other items in the hotel during my stay.

I am not a clean freak. Far from it. However, I appreciate other people to be one, especially those whom I paid hundreds of dollar to for providing me a room for the night.
Starwood always feels special to me and that they should be a notch better than the rest. I always had the pre conceived feeling that any time I stayed at any of the SPG properties, I’d be in for a treat.
Unfortunately, from my rating above, you could guess that it wasn’t the case here. It was my first time staying at The Sheraton West Des Moines. The property looked old fashioned but the lobby was well maintained. The whole stay was okay except one thing — cleanliness.
Kate W told me she wiped everything down every time she stayed at a hotel. I started to get paranoid and then I bought a clorox wipes to do just that in my hotel room. When I went to the toilet seat, it was hands down the grossest one I have ever encountered. It was old and it was chipped all over. Some of the clear coat has peeled creating an unsightly appearance with some brownish discolored spots in some parts. It could have been clean but it looked just gross. I imagine thousands of butts that had been there before mine. Ick!!! It was really hard to put my butt down on it without putting crapload of toilet paper covering every part of that toilet seat. I was close in requesting a new room. Lucky for them, I had unpacked.
Then, I went to the gym. The treadmill was so icky. It had spots all over and the front plastic covering before the conveyor belt was blanketed with a thick layer of dust. I had to grab some wipes and cleaned that whole thing before using it. I looked at the other two machines next to it — same condition. I admit my treadmill at home was dusty too because apparently it wasn’t a decoration. It had been just decorating my basement and collecting dust. However, treadmills in a hotel gym? They need to fire their cleaning crew.
Next, after the work out, I went back to my room and was so ready for a hot shower. I looked at the tub and the drain was completely rusty. Euww. When I showered, the drain was super slow so my feet were covered in dirty water. Double euwwww!!! Then when my feet were wet, and I walked on the carpet, I stepped on an area that felt different. I looked down and there was a huge discoloration on the carpet. Gawd, I hope it wasn’t barf spot.
Ugh, not sure if I would come back. Hopefully the other rooms weren’t as haggard as mine. That was kinda a blasphemy for SPG hotel. Shit, that was insane.

We hosted an event a month ago and everyone from front desk staff to event staff were so accommodating! Thank you for making our event a success!

The room was ok. Clean and comfortable enough. Housekeeping did not clean our room each day until well after 1, which tended to be inconvenient timing. Wifi is not free, which seemed ridiculous given the nightly rate. No refrigerators in the room either, which is annoying when traveling with small children or for multiple nights.
Breakfast was not free either, and the breakfast buffet wait staff couldn’t have been more unhelpful if they tried. The food was maybe average, certainly not more;the $ 12 cost was extremely high given the poor selection that reminded me of the free breakfast available at most hotels. The staff allowed dirty plates to stay on the table until the end of the meal, which is inconvenient for a buffet. However, they did make sure to drop off the check well before we finished eating.
Indoor pool was nice, but no hot tub and very little seating for parents; adults were standing on Saturday morning because there was no place to sit and watch the kids swim.
Overall, just an okay experience. One bright spot was the front desk staff. They were very kind and very helpful at every interaction.
The hotel was adequate

My rate plan was $ 147.92 for a Monday night. Add tax, and the total was $ 165.19. The rate included breakfast, but since I’m a platinum member, I guess the hotel assumed I’d just have breakfast in the club lounge. The fact is, I should’ve been given breakfast coupons, and I wasn’t. Thus, I only give two stars.
In addition, even though this place has a club lounge, and I was told it was open ²⁴⁄₇ with snacks and bottled water, there were no snacks when I finally arrived around 9PM. The lounge’s lights were also ALL turned off, and luckily I had my phone with me so I could use a flashlight. I could not find the light switches. Obviously there is a disconnect between the front desk and lounge staff. I have definitely experienced better at other Sheratons, hence the two stars!

I had a great stay at this Sheraton. The most important things for me: Quiet, clean, comfortable bed, consistent heat/​air, safe location, and breakfast on site. In addition, they leave complimentary bottles of water, Starbucks coffee and tea in-​room, nice toiletries, there is a desk, couch, the room is large, and everything worked as it should. The gym is small, but had the cardio equipment I needed and was nicer than most gyms in hotels. The front desk staff, server in the restaurant and housekeeping were all terrific. The only thing I would change is to have a fridge and microwave in the room. I would stay there again.

My husband and I stay in hotels 70+ nights per year because of our careers. We don’t often stay in Sheraton properties (typically Marriott), but my husband’s employer booked the stay while we were transitioning to West Des Moines, so we didn’t get a choice of hotels. If I did have a choice, I definitely would not have stayed here. The hotel has a dark and dingy, outdated feel to it, the housekeeping staff was rude and did a terrible job cleaning our room, and the rooms lack fridges which is an absolute inconvenience for long-​term stays (we were there for over a week). Also, we had to pay for wifi, which is pretty ridiculous considering it’s Iowa and this is not a 5-​star hotel. Breakfast is not free either, unlike many of the other hotels in the area.
Our stay here was a few months ago, but my husband’s coworker stayed at this hotel recently and got bed bugs, which was not very surprising to me considering how bad the housekeeping was during our stay there, but gross nonetheless! He was covered in bed bug bites!
This hotel might be ok for conventions/​meetings, but I would not recommend staying here overnight. My recommendation would be to stay in one of the newer hotels off of Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines or at the Embassy Suites in downtown Des Moines.

This hotel is below par for a full service Sheraton nationwide. This much is very clear. The staff on check-​in were not well trained, and several normal questions asked were not broached. That said, this is also not a business travelers hotel. The club lounge is standard but the other amenities, including the rooms and the hallway carpeting are worn. They say they’ve undergone major upgrades, but the rooms (we stayed in a couple recently) are now what was standard in Sheraton Suites 5 – 7 years ago.
Others have complained of the ambient music and the waterfall. Though I do find it strange that ambient music is playing well after 9 PM (now almost 11 PM), I do kind of love how that and the waterfall seem to act as white noise to drown out the rowdy visiting convention groups or area youth league championships. We did notice on a recent stay that management puts out hotel policy «warning signs» during such group stays to hopefully minimize disruption.
All in all, we hardly heard our neighbor’s TV running 9 – 5 because of the white noise in the corridor, breakfast is NEVER free at a full service major brand (so get over it), and we felt our stay was wholly average.

After arriving with my wife, two children and dog for a five night stay in our two room suite with refrigerator, microwave and fold out bed we were given keys to a single non-​smoking king. When I showed them our room reservation I had printed upon booking, the response was, «we don’t guarantee room types.» That would have been great to know before driving 14-​hours across country.
Huge fail. Don’t waste your time with these shysters.

I have been to a few Sheratons throughout the US and abroad. Some have been great while some have not. This one in particular was not. From the looks of things, it was probably really good twenty years ago but is in need of a major renovation. The beds feel worn out, the doors are extremely light, ac system is loud, and the carpet is loose and coming off of the floor.

Typical Sheraton hotel. no major frills. No major negatives.
The elevators were slow but other than that it was fine. Nothing special.
