I have been to all the other restaurants(that I know of) in town for gyros multiple times. I rarely venture down to campus since I have little kids. Glad I finally got to try Captain Gyro’s today. We had gyros, fries and O-rings Gyro Meat: When I first saw the meat on the spit, it did not look good. Frankly it looked underdone without any browning. And it turned out to be true, but that’s because they finish it perfectly on the flattop. Their meat is the best gyro meat in town. Their meat portion is a little smaller than the other places, but the other places give too much… the ratio gets out of whack. Greater Lafayette Greek Food Gyro Meat Rankings 1. Captain Gyro’s 2. Akropolis 3. Parthenon 4. Christo’s Pita It was soft, pliable, never got firm even when I was on the last bite. They nailed it again. Greater Lafayette Gyro Pita Rankings 1. Captain Gyro 2t. Parthenon 2t. Akropolis 4. Christo’s Tzatziki This is the biggest sticking point with some of the other gyros in town. I have had tzatziki in many places, including in several Greek cities and towns and I have made it myself many times. I like to think I have a good idea of what it should be like. Captain’s was very good. Almost the best. Greater Lafayette Tzatziki Rankings 1. Christo’s 2. Captain Gyro’s 3. Parthenon 5. Akropolis(ranked #5 because there is a huge dropoff between Parthenon and Akropolis) Toppings: My tomatoes were on the unripe side. Onion quantity was lacking. Not much, if any oregano on the onions/tomatoes. 1. Christo’s 2. Akropolis 3. Parthenon 4. Captain Gyro’s I wont rank the fries and onion rings. Fries are a little thin, but they were exceptional. Cooked to order in our case, so possibly if they sit they get soggy. Onion rings were very crunchy. I like the crispy ones better like they serve at Akropolis. Overall Greater Lafayette Gyro Rankings 1. Captain Gyro’s 2. Parthenon 3. Christo’s 4. Akropolis I will be back another day when the students are again gone. The restaurant is just too small for me to take my three little children on a normal day. Prices were very reasonable for the food quality. The side dishes were big. Too big. People there were nice.

Really tasty, great for a quick lunch. Food comes hot and fresh. Quick friendly service. I am not 100% sure, but it seems like it is a family owned restaurant, which I respect.

Owner told black customer that they always have problems with«You People» after messing up the guy’s order. He then tossed the guy’s refund at him.

True to their name, this place has excellent gyros. The gyros themselves are about $ 6 plus tax, and for $ 2 or so more you can get a combo with fries and a drink. My chicken gyro came out piping hot and all the ingredients(chicken, pita, tomato, tzatziki, onion) were fresh and flavorful. The chicken and pita were especially delicious and well-seasoned. My husband had the combo and his fries were not that great(they were seriously undercooked), but that was my only complaint.

Awesome gyros for a great price, the place is a little small but it’s clean and priced just right I’d recommend this place to anyone. The staff was friendly.

Maybe as a take-out place it would be okay, but this place was just too unkempt for me! Their Greek salad was absolutely average, evidence of the minimal care with which it was created was the uncrumbled feta cheese sitting was on top of the iceberg lettuce looking like a stick of chalk. Of course, I realize students are a lot less picky about their calories…

Very good! I ordered just a gyro and I’m glad I didn’t make it a combo(with fries and a drink) because the sandwich was huge and packed with meat.

So they made it better replaced the one missing and have us money back with an order of free fries.

Large portion for a single gyro and tastes fine. The spicy gyro is just the regular gyro with buffalo sauce on it. I would have preferred to add the sauce on my own(since it’s available on the table) if I had known that beforehand. The fries are pretty unappetizing — pretty sure they are frozen.

They have decent gyros. Not the best. However don’t be too surprised if you get sick eating from this place because it’s not that clean. The owner guy picked up fries he dropped on the floor and tried to sell it to me. Gross.

Just left this establishment and I am not disappointed. The spicy gyro was the best gyro I’ve ever had.

their gyros are far from authentic Greek food. the people who make gyros are clearly American.

I love this place. Delicious gyros at an amazing value– so much food for only $ 6! They also have burgers that are crazy good. But i always order a classic gyro and it is perfect every time. And it isnt a chain! Great owner and employees. Highly recommended!!!

I love GYROs! I was craving gyros and found this place through Unilocal! It did not disappoint. The gyros are about $ 6 each and I got the spicy gyro. I do admit it was kind of salty for me, but still a very good gyro! The fries are very thin and crispy, the way I like it!

Their gyros are pretty good but this place is far from authentic Greek food. Your options for sides include fries and other fried options. Their prices are fair but the restaurant is filthy. I don’t think I will be visiting again because of this.

Awesome spicy gyro and some very good hummus. A very overlooked place on Chauncey. If you haven’t been here I would definitely recommend going before you leave. However, I wouldn’t recommend varying from a normal or spicy gyro and the hummus. Those are the best things on the menu. Also, very good fries!

Wow, I’m pretty surprised at all of the negative comments on this place. While I was attending Purdue for 5 years, I’ve been to this place more times than I can remember. But I wouldn’t forget a bad experience, and I’ve never had one from this place. Though I would LOVE some feta cheese with the gyros, I absolutely LOVE them without it. I have had gyros at SO many places, but this is still my favorite. I always saw the same 2 – 3 people working almost every time I went in. The gyros are priced just fine. I usually didn’t get fries or anything else with mine unless I was sitting down to eat. Many times, I’d just order on the phone after class and pick it up on my way home. Always ready in 5 – 10 minutes every time I’ve called. The pitas were always soft, the meat was just the same almost every time. I’ve been to too many places that have random hard pieces of meat, but I’ve never had that issue here. Their sauce is amazing. Whenever I make a trip back to Indiana, I’ll definitely make the hour trip to Lafayette from my house just to get some yummy gyros from this place. :) Can’t wait to go back. Also, a word to the wise. I’ve seen many people complain about their orders being wrong(at all different take-out joints) and not realizing it until they get home. Check your order before you leave the restaurant! It’s not hard to quickly open a bag and peek through it. Better than having to make a second trip.

First of all, it was ridiculously hot inside. I’ve had many gyros. This was meh, ok. The one thing they do well is pack it w gyro meat. It also has onions, tomatoes, & tzatziki sauce. Thank God there was one table outside, where although hot, it was not as hot as the interior. I felt bad for the young lady & young man working inside that sauna. They were dripping in sweat… Hmmm, I thought my fries were especially salty. :-\ You will unnecessarily sweat upon entrance even if all you do is come in and pick up a to go order… yuck. Attire: bathing suit and towel.
