Specialties
The Union Rack and Roll specializes in bowling, billiards, and arcade games.
History
Established in 1936.
Of all the traditions Purdue Memorial Union has adopted since its opening in 1924, some of the liveliest reside in the basement: bowling and billiards in Union Rack and Roll.
By the time bowling lanes were installed in the Union in 1936, bowling had become so popular among college students that many student unions across the country housed bowling lanes, and the Association of College Unions even hosted National Bowling Championships. Purdue was no exception to this craze: Ten more lanes were installed in the Union in the 1940s — lanes that still stand today, although they’ve been renovated.
Union Rack and Roll today is, of course, different from the space that students of the ‘30s and ‘40s would’ve known. In 2001, a large-scale renovation provided for a completely updated facility.
