History

Established in 1895.

The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach is the oldest public library in Palm Beach County. It began as the Free Reading Room for the City of West Palm Beach and then a $ 100 donation from Henry Flagler created the first City Library.

In January 1924, the City’s first permanent library opened. Memorial Library was an artistic Spanish-style building facing the Intracoastal Waterway.

A new library designed by architect Norman Robson was dedicated in April 1962. The name of the library at 100 Clematis Street was changed to the West Palm Beach Public Library.

In April 2009, the library relocated to its current facility in City Center and on February 21, 2012, the Mandel Foundation awarded a $ 5 million grant to the West Palm Beach Library Foundation for the enhancement of library programs and services. The West Palm Beach Public Library thus became the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach.
