Rainbow Point Campground

Arrived at campground late (10:05pm to be exact) due to a delayed flight. I read the campground board for instructions and grabbed a envelope as indicated. No where on board indicated they were fiull. I proceeded to the enterance and was greeted by a female campground host driving her golf cart. Extremely rude and aggressive. I apoligized and explained the situation but she continued to shine her flashlight in ny eyes and yelling that it was past 10pm and she would call authoruties. I felt like I was under interogation as she refused to take the light out og ju eyes. She yelled that it was clearly marked on the board thay they are full and demanded me to leave. After leaving I checked the board once again and there was absolutely no signs indicating.
Turns out it was for thw best as I just went down the road to Hebgen Basin-​Bakers Hole Camground and stayed there 3 days and couldnt be happier. Wonderful hosts and amazing river views. I would recommend if you are heading to Yellowstone to enjoy a relaxing time, steer clear of Raknbow Point. On another note: I was bit by at least 10 mosquitos in the 5 minute interogation, so many mosquitos! Not a single mosquito at Hebgen Basin-​Bakers Hole Campground.

Nice campground if you can’t get a spot inside Yellowstone. Only $ 16 a night for a single site. The spots are not right on the lake but a short walk away. Camp host was very friendly. My only complaint was the wash board road to get to the campground. Very rough on the motorhome and about 1.5 miles. I posted a pic so you could see the road. We would camp here again if we were in the area.

Perfect family campground convenient to the west entrance to Yellowstone. We stayed here for four nights in loop C with electric hookups. Our kids made fast friends with other kids and spent the evenings riding bikes around the loops. Tons of families here. Camp host was kind and helpful. Bathrooms were clean with hand sanitizer. Brief walk to lake for easy fishing and lounging by the mini beaches. Bugs seemed to be minimal in the woods. Lots of privacy and sites are big! No dump station but has water access to fill up with.
Took us about 10 minutes to get to the park.

Awesome camp ground, host was friendly and drove around selling wood for same price as in town. Also something not mentioned is that in loop A they have a faucet to fill your fresh water tank on your RV. Only 10 miles from West Yellowstone.

While out visiting family in Montana, we took a weekend road trip to Yellowstone National Park. My cousin’s husband choose Rainbow Point Campground because of its proximity to the park and for its affordability. Our campsite cost half the price of campsites in the park. I haven’t been camping that many times, but I had a great experience here.
We pulled right up to the numbered campsite that had our name on a reservation card. The site was located right across from the toilets, which are just your standard non-​flushing outdoorsy ones. We were pleasantly surprised to find them super clean, well-​stocked, and without any odor. The campsite itself is surrounded by trees and has a picnic table. You aren’t extremely far from neighbors, but it’s always nice to have others nearby for any forgotten items. There were several slay piles nearby, so we didn’t have to purchase/​bring wood to start our campfire.
The lake was just a short walk from our campsite. The little one was able to fish off of the dock; he didn’t catch anything, but he did have a great time. The adults were able to relax with a beverage and watch the spectacular sunset from behind the mountains. It was amazingly beautiful! (The first reviewer captured it perfectly!)
The campground host came by in the morning and in the evening to check on us. They were all really friendly. This is probably expected, but keep in mind, there is spotty to no cell phone service anywhere in the campground.

If like me you arrive at Yellowstone too late to grab a camping spot, I highly recommend Rainbow Point just outside the West Entrance. It’s just north on ¹⁹¹⁄₂₈₇ on the left side, then down a few miles on a dirt road. It feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere but it’s worth it as the campground is located on Hebgen Lake.
It’s a first-​come first-​serve self-​service campground. You grab an envelope, find an empty site (look for those without a tag on the post as some sites appear empty but are actually taken), and drop off the money back in the box at the entrance. Don’t be fooled into thinking that just because it’s self-​service it’s not being supervised. There’s a camp host who comes around and keeps on eye on the reservations.
The facilities aren’t fancy — there aren’t bathrooms with flush toilets, sinks or showers — just vault toilets and water spigots. However, these are some of the nicest vault toilets I’ve ever used. People seemed to be really good about not peeing on the seats and putting the cover down because they were super clean, well stocked with thick TP and they didn’t smell at all! Well, they did smell of fake potpourri but they didn’t smell like toilet. Although if you’re downwind of the outhouses you can get a whiff of it. These would turn out to be the nicest vault toilets of the week.
Though there aren’t any tent-​only areas in the campground it’s a mellow place with sites spaced far enough apart that you don’t feel like everyone’s on top of each other and there’s no giant RV looming over you.
The best part is the location on the lake. Great sunsets. Great way to start the week in Yellowstone.
Note: there is a boat dock and several summer homes in the area so there’s more traffic than you might expect for such a remote location. Also, there are no bear lockers for food — they just recommend that you store in the car so I presume that there isn’t a crazy bear problem.
