Walter A. Thomas, MD

Dr. Walter Thomas is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in sports medicine and general orthopaedics. Dr. Thomas completed his undergraduate studies at Pacific Union College and earned his medical degree from Loma Linda University. He performed his internship, residency and chief residency at Loma Linda University. He then completed a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Fellowship at the University of California at San Diego.

Dr. Thomas’ sports medicine background includes serving as an orthopaedic consultant for Team USA Waterpolo, associate team physician for the San Diego Padres Baseball Club, San Diego Thunder, San Diego State Football Club, San Diego Gulls Hockey Club, and the San Diego State Women’s Soccer Club. He previously served as the orthopaedic surgeon to the San Diego State University Rugby Team and the San Diego Thunder Semi-​Pro Football Club.

Dr. Thomas is a Qualified Medical Examiner for the State of California.

I am glad to subscribe to the very high opinion I have of Dr Walter A Thomas. I had lifted my Mac Computer the wrong way resulting in a severely damaged right shoulder. I was in pain 24⁄7. After the recommended MRI and consultation Rotator Cuff Surgery was the only way to go. In spite of the fact that I live 100 miles away from Dr Thomas I felt that I was in good hands. The surgery was over 3 hours and on leaving the surgery center I was taken out for lunch by a friend. Rested in the afternoon and out for dinner. The following day I had the usual post op pain and I rested for a few days before returning to my photographic studio. I became temporally left handed. Bottom line I managed very well. I was in a sling for 6 weeks and diligently followed medical instructions. (VERY IMPORTANT) I did extensive physical therapy and now 9 months later I have full movement back and100% pain free. Dr Thomas is extremely patient and supportive, carefully explaining progress every step of the way. The office staff was very friendly and efficient. I never waited more than a few minutes to be seen. I can without a doubt recommend this highly trained and skilled surgeon. THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH.

As fate would have it, Sunday March 6 2016 was one of the worst days of my life when I, a runner, hiker, pilates studio owner and yogi fell on my patella in just the right way to fracture it. Reason and determination prevailed and with the expertise of Dr. Walter Thomas, (Loma Linda University Medical School, UCSD, Orthopedic consultant to USA Water Polo team etc) and his pro team of assistants, I was quickly diagnosed and fitted with the dreaded but necessary DonJoy knee immobilizer that in spite of its critical therapeutic nature was to become the symbol of my physical and mental incarceration .
No one wants to be faced with an orthopedic injury but life happens. Fortunately a lifetime of fitness and clean living helped me to heal my fracture in under five weeks but I owe the excellent care and support I received to the courteous, highly skilled and attentive hands of Dr. Walter Thomas and his reliable team. I’m already visualizing the imminent return of my essential early morning run. Thank you for the positive, professional and supportive care I received in what was an extremely traumatic moment in my already turbulent life. Sometimes the universe just reminds you that everyone has a breaking point.

I honestly can’t say enough about how thankful I am that we found Dr. Thomas for our daughter’s knee surgery! Not only is he knowledgeable and professional, his warm and caring personality put us all at ease during a very frightening experience. He’s an incredibly skilled surgeon that truly knows his craft. Our daughter is healing beautifully and on the road to recovery thanks to Dr. Thomas! His staff is also top notch, always available to answer any questions and are exceptionally helpful. Exceptional experience!!! Dr. Thomas repaired the damaged cartilage in my knee following many years of wear and tear from running and golfing. He did not try to sell me any equipment either as one poster has suggested. He also refused to do surgery to repair my rotator cuff suggesting that I do PT first. I was very skeptical about this thinking I needed surgery to fix the problem. But after taking the time to go to PT and treat conservatively I have returned to my normal activities. I respect that fact that he didn’t immediately recommend surgery like the first doctor I saw. The PT he sent me to was very knowledgeable and gave me a great program which I use to manage my strength and mobility. Great front office service as well. I never waited more than 10 minutes for my schedule appointment. An all around great job. Thank you Dr. Thomas and your excellent team. I will certainly refer my friends and family for their sports injuries.

Dr. Thomas performed an ACL reconstruction May 2014 after I injured myself at Taekwon Do training. In less than 9 months I was back and stronger than before with the help, expertise and experience of Dr. Thomas and his team. Post surgery care and PT was second to none.

Dr. Thomas is the BEST! He was the only doctor (after three) to diagnose my stress fracture. Several doctors missed it with x-​ray and ultra sound. I am a marathon running and he is gotten me ready for my next race quicker than I expected! Dr. Thomas is an excellent sports medicine doctor. I highly recommend him.

My son who was very anxious about his knee surgery just had an amazing experience with Dr. Thomas. He is a great orthopedic surgeon in every way. Competent we had a great outcome, walking same day, no pain, was able to go back to college within a few days feeling great. Confidence, it was very obvious that he knew exactly what he was doing and made you feel at ease and comfortable. He went above and beyond never rushed us spent extra time to review other issues and worked around my son’s schedule as he had to go back to college.
We would refer and highly recommend Dr. Walter Thomas for any of your orthopedic needs.

Top-​notch doctor. Always smiling and helpful and answers all of your questions. Great surgeon. Sweet nurse who assists you in the exam room. I do not hesitate to recommend him — he’s terrific. I have knee issues, and he has helped me so much over the past 2 years. If you are searching for a knee expert who is friendly and skilled and easy to talk to — search no more. Dr. Thomas was nice and friendly when he looked at my leg injury. Then he recommended a special boot. The boot wrapped around the injury spot. It was tight and uncomfortable. I hesitated to take the boot. But nurse and doctor insisted it was good for me. I agreed to try. It is a bad decision.
The linen of boot kept the injury spot hot which aggravated the swelling. It was bulky and hard to walk. It also made driving impossible. I found out the problems right after I left the office. But office did not take it back. I put away the boot when I got home. They charged $ 400+ for the boot.
Watch out what equipment they offer you and ask for price.

Dr. Thomas is awesome. I did a lot of research before choosing him as my surgeon for my knee. He ended up replacing my ACL. I found him to be attentive and excellent at what he does. I’m already back doing almost everything 8 months post-​op. I would recommend him to all of my friends/​family. Staff and office are great — clean and hardly ever had to wait! Kris in the office was extremely helpful with dealing with insurance issues as well.

Dr. Thomas is an exceptionally gifted surgeon. I had my ACL Reconstruction done on October 2013 after I injured my knee while playing tennis. He explained to me very clearly about the procedure and made me feel comfortable. His knowledge, confidence and compassion always made me stay positive both before and after surgery.
His association with top class physical therapists like Xcellerate Physical Therapy made my recovery smooth. I would attribute my recovery so far to Dr. Thomas and my Therapist Tito Ramirez and I’m very grateful to them.
The staff is very friendly and prompt. I have never waited more than 5 mins for my appointment.
I would recommend Dr. Thomas to anyone hands down!

I was originally referred to another orthopedic surgeon but was rejected because my insurance is Covered California. Dr. Thomas accepted my insurance, diagnosed the problem and started treatment which ultimately led to a quick recovery. I have seen Dr. Thomas for both my knee and my shoulder. I am a runner and obstacle racer and well tend to need attention every so often. I saw Dr. T for an IT band issue about 3 years ago and most recently about 4 months ago for a small tear in my shoulder. He was very responsive, took the time to talk to me about rehab options and follow up care… Thankfully i didn’t need surgery. His staff is very friendly and helpful. I recommend him to my fellow crazy runner friends without hesitation.

I was referred to Dr. Thomas by Core Physical Therapy when I had a shoulder injury that was not healing. Dr. Thomas’ office got me in to see him right away, and after an MRI revealed that I had a fully torn rotator cuff and would need shoulder surgery, Dr. Thomas was very through and compassionate in explaining my options. My health insurance was going to change, so the staff worked to get me scheduled for surgery before the change, per my request. The surgery went well, and after surgery, Dr. Thomas continued to follow up with my progress. He was also in communication with Core Physical Therapy, so they were both monitoring my progress. Dr. Thomas’ office staff was very friendly and helpful. The surgery setup was smooth, and the follow up discussions (by the office staff) with my insurance company were very helpful. Dr. Thomas also squeezed in time to see my daughter when she was home from out of state with a broken ankle. I would highly recommend Dr. Thomas to anyone needing orthopedic help.

I would like to take a moment to commend the office of Dr. Walter A. Thomas and Dr. Keith Robertson. I have been a patient of Dr. Thomas’ for the past 4 years. Both he and Dr. Robertson and their staff are exceptional. The service they provide to their patients is extraordinary. Generally, my experience in doctors offices has been, long waiting times followed by the doctor saying, «What’s wrong, tell me quickly, I have other patients waiting. Doctor’s Thomas and Robertson enter the room quickly, followed by, how are you, tell me what’s wrong, take all the time you need to explain, lets discuss this, and do you have any additional questions or concerns?
