The Whately Inn

My family and I frequently dine at the Whatley Inn when we are looking for a traditional home cooked style meal. The atmosphere is very quaint and charming and we’ve always had terrific wait staff. They have a great selection of locally brewed beers and wines.
The food is always delicious. The steaks are tender and topped with a delicious homemade steak sauce. I love the side salads with the creamy dil dressing.

Traditional old New England inn, serving traditional «old fashioned» meals, in a style that takes me back to my youth (I am well into middle age!). Food is abundant and well priced as meals are 4 course inclusive of coffee. You don’t see this much today! I had the filet, which is 12 oz! While it was tender and nicely done, it was not rare as ordered, and could have benefitted from additional seasoning. As I had never had it, I asked for the house brown sauce it comes with served on the side, and was pleasantly surprised at how tasty it was. My mom had the crispy duck, which she loved, we have never seen such a generous portion! Order the pâté appetizer (included), it was awesome. To be quite honest, and at the risk of sounding like an old f-​rt, younger people may find the food too heavy, and a bit «fuddy duddy» to quote a younger friend.
This is not your modern cuisine, just old style American fare served plainly. I was a bit disappointed in the uncomfortable and not real attractive banquet style chairs, and that none of the women in our party was given a rose as is customary here. I was, however, impressed with the specialty drinks menu, and the variety of liquor choices available. The lounge area looked cozy, I would like to spend an evening there. This is definitely a place I will be back to soon.

I took my partner there for his birthday. I was sadly disappointed. I thought the food would be great based on the reviews but the best part of this $ 100 meal was the soup and dessert. My partner ordered the stuffed sole. The fish was tough and fishy tasting. The crab stuffing was mostly breading. The salad was ho-​hum. I had the shrimp scampi which was just okay as well. The only thing I would order here again was the clam chowder if I was driving by and starving. The décor needs updating regardless if it’s a historic inn or not. It just doesn’t feel like a «nice» place. It feels like someone fixed it up about 20 years ago and forgot it. Too bad. This could be a lovely supper destination. The final disappointment came when I had told both the hostess and the waitress it was my friend’s birthday and they didn’t seem to care. No candle or anything on his dessert.? With so many good restaurants around in the valley, I would not choose to go back.

Classic New England dining in a friendly old style setting not far off the interstate, but this isn’t a place for a quick bite. The Whatley Inn offers a four course dinner every evening and Sundays from 1:00 PM. Whether you order the baked scrod, the half duck or one of their many acclaimed meats (we especially go for the rack of lamb and the prime rib of beef, the latter available only Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays), among other choices, meals are priced based on the main plate, which comes with a communal vegetable (often of mixed quality) and choice of potato, and include a choice of appetizers, salad and desert (house made, but often a bit on the too sweet side). Special appetizers are available for an additional charge. There is a small bar area (with stools) and a small, but reasonable wine list. The bread is garlic rolls, which tend to be a bit greasy, and sometimes the servers are a bit overwhelmed (or disappear!), but especially if you’re part of the «mature» crowd they tend to attract most of the food is quite good (although not light) and the value is tough to beat if you’re looking for a leisurely, multi-​course meal. In recent years they have installed an entry ramp and accessible facilities, also, so long as gender typing doesn’t offend you, those who are identified as female receive a complementary rose upon departure! Definitely call ahead for a reservation no matter how small your party, and when you do have a reservation, be sure to be on time!

I’m not sure what all the negative Nancy’s are complaining about? I visit family from out of state; I have been here twice over the past two years, each time I leave absolutely stuffed, the waitress was pleasant both times. The food doesn’t come out as fast as some may want because there is so much of it that if it came out fast you would bust a button! You will definitely want the extra time to let it digest a bit. If you want cheap, crappy massed produced food fast, go to Olive Garden. If you want to enjoy great food with friends and family while relaxing; Whately Inn! Yes the décor isn’t something from a swanky downtown Boston bistro, but it’s not supposed to be: it’s an old Inn! Keep doing what you’re doing Whately Inn!

I’ve given the owners 24 hours to respond to me before posting my review… And they didn’t. Quite possibly the worst meal I’ve had. Ritz Crackers served with Pâté. The place exists for the percentage of Americans — and their 70 plus parents — who have truly not a clue what good food is. The prices are high and these folks thus think, «This must be good food. It costs much more than subway.» For Shame Whately Inn… Here you are in the middle of farm country with fresh produce likely growing all over the area. And you serve (poorly) processed frozen food straight out of 1975. I would rather fast with my family than return here.

If you like freezing while eating my mom 82 had to eat with her coat on. Told and asked if the heat could be turned up. Then came my food delmonico steak 30.00 over half was fat now this was my birthday dinner. I did tell our waitress nothing was done. So save your money and go out of town.

Having been to to Whately Inn a few times prior I was always happy with the dinner. Yesterday I ordered Sea Scallops en casserole — which I have had twice prior. The waitress brought our meals over and I was shocked when she plopped the scallops on a plate out of the casserole dish essentially leaving all the good flavor and breading etc. The same was done with the scallop potatoes … It looked incredibly unappetizing and I had such high expectations from the last couple times.

Great service, great food, beautiful vibe, a did I mention the bread… I will 100% come back when I am in Massachusetts.

Delicious! Went with a group of friends on a Sunday afternoon. Everyone loved their meal. Great service. Great value. Will definitely return. Décor is dated but homey.

The «fresh“veggies was totally frozen becsuse i have taken cooking classes and i know how to cook. Retrain or get new cooks. To bad i cant give you a half a star.

Delicious meal and excellent service. We came for Mother’s Day and enjoyed the filet, baked stuffed lobster and scallops for our entrees. With food allergies they make my food the way it needs to be which is very refreshing. The service is fast and accurate. Remodeling has occurred recently and the restrooms look great. Hopefully they will continue to make updates. I always recommend this place to friends looking for somewhere delicious for dinner.

It’s been 30 years since the last time I ate at the Whately Inn and I’m reporting that nothing’s changed other than the white table cloths and the waitresses.
Pros: my drink was yummy and had 2, meal price includes choice of appetizer, salad, potato side and dessert. All of which was mediocre at best and which would not have been noticed if my main was cooked as requested.
Cons: my first cocktail was a specialty drink that had ²⁄₃ ice in the glass and only filled ½ way. I made a comment to the waitress after I finished it in 4 sips so my next drink still had ²⁄₃ ice but ¾ libation. I was so excited to see duck in the menu. Love duck and I was very specific how I wanted it prepared. Duck arrived way over cooked almost well done. It was a travesty to sayge least. I barely ate ¼ of it. I did tell the waitress to let the chef know but nothing came of it other than ‘I’m sorry’ from the waitress. I had tiramisu as my dessert. Not sure what was substituted for lady fingers but it was quite soggy with no hints if rum or espresso.
The waitress did seal my 1 star Unilocal rating by forgetting to bring our ‘reason for being there’ guest his token birthday cupcake with candle and traditional happy birthday singing. I did not make a seen but after everyone went outside I expressed my disappointment about this and I got an ‘oh I’m so sorry!” Ps. The rose gesture for women would be awesome if they were decent quality roses. Mine was brown and dead by morning.
Note to self: although I’m sure the Whatley Inn will be still running in 30 years, i certainly won’t be eating there again.

This past weekend we stopped in at The Whately Inn to ask about holding a function at this restaurant. I have to say that the service we received was incredible. We came in about 10 minutes before the restaurant opened for service on a Sunday, and the head chef took time out of his day to meet with us for a few minutes.
The restaurant itself is rustic in nature and totally has a farm house feel. The food was delicious and the staff was incredible. This place is a great place to stop in for a fancy dinner or Sunday brunch. The only caveat is that it is a bit expensive, but the food is great and worth the cost.

Having read good reviews, we decided to make reservations for Saturday night, which happened to also be our anniversary. We arrived early and took a seat at the bar. After a few minutes of ignoring us while fumbling with the TV, the bartender finally made eye contact and asked if we knew what we wanted. We didn’t, as the bartender had yet to offer us a cocktail menu or wine list. If the surly bartender hadn’t been the first indication of the night to come, the cocktail menu of sugary awfulness certainly was. Every cocktail contained some variation of Bailey’s, Godiva liquor, and chocolate syrup, and these weren’t even the so-​called «dessert» cocktails. The wine list was uninspiring and the best they could do for beer was Sam’s Oktoberfest. Okay, but not craft.
We were seated quickly, and noted the large, noisy room packed with baby boomers. There were only two other millennial couples in the room which struck us as a bit odd. When we sat down, the waiter brought us hot rolls drizzled in butter and garlic, which were quite good.
The menu consisted of many «baked, stuffed» items and indeed, Whately Inn must be one of the top buyers of breadcrumbs in the region. We ordered the oysters rockefeller, «Maryland» seafood cakes, French onion soup, and lobster casserole to share. The oysters were rubbery and bland and the seafood cakes a dubious concoction of mayonnaise, bread crumbs, and perhaps a tablespoon of canned «seafood.» The French onion soup was possibly the only passable item we ordered; though the broth didn’t taste homemade, the cheese was decent and plentiful.
Then came the lobster casserole: frozen, mealy lobster tossed with cream, butter, bread crumbs, and what tasted like McCormick pizza seasoning. This disaster was served with a side of frozen corn and cheap iceberg lettuce salad with Kraft-​quality dressing. Nursing homes across the nation have better offerings.
At this point, we were so disappointed by what turned out to be a fairly inedible meal of bread crumbs and frozen/​canned seafood that we bailed on dessert and coffee, even though they came with the entrée (also suspect).

Very disappointing duck. Ordered medium rare, it arrived well-​done with a plate that must have emerged from a volcano. Any restaurant which actually serves duck should know better. And what is with the maraschino cherries on a «red currant sauce?!» Okay, the vanilla pudding was creative, what’s that? Crème brûlée?! At least, I know I can dress up the Mighty Fine vanilla at home. A thumbs up to the wait staff. They are very friendly.

My sister-​in-​law & brother took me out here tonight. I had king crab stuffed sole as an entrée, marinated mushrooms for appetizer, and Russian dressing on the salad. Everything was absolutely excellent, including the flour-​less chocolate cake with raspberry sauce. Great piña colada, too! I would definitely recommend the Whateley Inn, but make a reservation, and be ready for a long dinner (1.5 hours to eat all 5 courses).

Old, with a lot of charm and character this is indeed the place where the «Blue-​Hairs» dine! My mother requested dinner at the Whately Inn to celebrate her 86^th birthday so that is where 16 of us gathered to celebrate. The place is classic New England with it’s old Inn charm. It’s large enough to comfortably accommodate a party of 16 in it’s main dining room. The food was very, very good. My wife and I have GLUTEN FREE dietary requirements and our questions were confidently answered by our server, who was attentive and got everything right. Service was prompt, servers professional. I was very pleasantly surprised at what an enjoyable time we had. I will gladly go back for her 87^th birthday!

It’s comfort food and comfortable and the menu reminds me of when I was young.
My parents took us to restaurants like this. Classic Americana with classic dishes.

Saturday nights are always crowded you need a reservation for sure. It’s a country French décor inside. Food French and Continental. Lots of Beef and seafood.
Arrived at 5pm as they opened Thursday 8÷12÷10. There was already 10 tables seated and by 6:30 the place was packed full, people waiting outside. Busier than usual for a Thursday as they have a 30%off to commemorate 30 yrs open sale this week.
Waiter went out of his way to arrange chicken dish for my daughter that was not on the menu. service quality did slip a bit as the place filled up. I am not sure they expected the sell out crowd on Thursday. The place seemed a little short staffed.

Rack of lamb Was very good
Mushroom Soup, a bit Acidic
Coffee good
Rolls Ok
Potatoe whipped with cheddar and finished under broiler; Very Yummy
Chicken Pâté was ok
Would gladly return, lots of stuff on the menu I would love to Try But will wait till the anniversary sale is over and come on a week day.
