Tates Old Fashioned Ice Cream Shop

Tate’s is a good, old fashioned ice cream parlor in the heart of downtown Wheaton. It has been around for years and although the ownership is somewhat new, the style and atmosphere and recipes all stayed the same. The ice cream is fabulous and the décor is charming. This is a great stop on a sunny afternoon… for the ice cream lover in all of us. I highly recommend it.

Tates has (had?) the best ice cream in wheaton… but are they even open any more? I’ve stopped by 5 times in the last 2 months, all during times when they were listed as being open and they never are.
Their web page is still up and there’s no signage up in the windows… just a locked door and no lights on… Hopefully they open back up, I miss that ice cream.

Excellent local hole-​in-​the-​wall shop! If you walk by too fast you might miss it! But DEFINITELY DONT! They always have many awesome flavors and let you taste literally until you find something that you like. Everyone working there is always so chipper and eager to help you with great manners, even when you are really indecisive like me!

I’m really liking coming to this area of Wheaton more and more, and I’m always glad to have ice cream shop options. Tates is okay, but not amazing. The ice cream is just okay, and a bit on the pricey side. I wouldn’t totally avoid this place, though. They just aren’t the best one in my opinion.
The employees also could have been a bit more engaging — it was obvious they wanted to be anywhere but there. Again, comparing this to another ice cream shop in the area, Tates loses in this category as well.

If there were a six star (yes 6) rating this place would get it! I love ice cream that much. This place is under new ownership as of 2012 and I didn’t think it was possible to get better.
I always pay cash here so I can tip the workers. $ 4.30 for my three scoops? You’re damn straight you’re getting the change from my $ 5. Don’t be cheap, those kids need the money!
Who doesn’t carry around cash to pay for this party in your mouth? My personal favorites are Birthday Cake, Pistachio, and Chocolate Peanut Butter. I have a lot more but I won’t make you jealous. Stop drooling, Unilocal Community. New additions to this list are Go Nuts and Oreo Smash. The latter has been around forever. I wish I could have all their flavors at one time. Then again, I like not being tubby anymore.
This place isn’t a soft serve ice cream place. It is really «Old Fashioned» ice cream. If you wanted a funky, fresh, and fantastic dessert… this is it! I love places like this that have that local joint feel that are not franchised. They make homemade ice cream so you know it is PHENOMENAL!
I’ve been from coast to coast looking for the best ice cream and this is it, no question about it. If you’re looking for service with a smile, a great location, and overall a «sweet» deal, just come here
The line moves quickly, the bathroom is clean, and the menu is written in chalk! If you walk in this place you will see elderly couples, youth baseball teams, families, and Unilocal Elites like me! If you don’t want to come here that is fine, that just means there will be more for me.
This place is kind of like Kelly Clarkson: Miss (Independent), kind of chubby but still (Cute), and someone you could spend the rest of your life and grow (OLD) with. If I ever had a chance to take the winner of the first season of American Idol, I’d take here to this place! I’d even. Guy had it coming though, he went to some franchise ice cream place that wasn’t Tates!
I would go here every single day if I wasn’t in a different county molding the young minds of America. I am a teacher and I can afford it… so Mr. Mutual Fund, take out the whole family tonight!
I promise you will not regret coming. If you don’t want to finish yours, call me and I will. My brain and teeth may not be happy due to brain freeze and sensitive teeth, but they’ll get over it!

I got «Ma’am-ed» here. Just when I thought I’d get carded for life at Trader Joe’s or Binny’s when I’m buying my bottles of Prosecco, I get «Ma’am-ed». In fact, I got «Ma’am-ed» by the two different teenyboppers working the counter! Ugh woe is me. Because if there’s anyplace that should make you feel like a kid again, it’s Tate’s!
With 30 plus homemade ice cream flavors, plus the different concoctions they can make (sundaes, shakes, floats), Tate’s is one place that will make you giddy with excitement.
It was National Chocolate Ice Cream Day (yes, it said so on the Internet so it must be true!) and I met up with Angela P and her M&M duo for some great ice cream. It was her suggestion to try Tate’s because I really wanted some good non-​chainy ice cream. Trust Angela P, she’s in the know.
My sidekick and I split the Triple Chocolate and Frango Mint Chocolate. Their «one scoop» is actually two scoops so you can split the «one scoop» by choosing two different flavors. The flavors were so rich and the texture so creamy. Good quality stuff. Nothing too icy or bland about it. I got to taste the PB & J and decided to bring home a pint of it. Great flavor and small chunks of peanut butter. Believe me, hard to share with anyone at home.
They also make this shake from their sherbets and 7up. It sounded vaguely like something I had at Cock Robin so many years ago (see? thinking childhood again!) so I HAD to order one. It was delicious and refreshing and did take me back to sitting at CR back so long ago.
And getting «ma’am-ed» isn’t so bad. Just shows their service is wonderful. Friendly and oh so polite.

About as good as an ice cream shop gets. The location is great — right on Front St. in downtown Wheaton. Tate’s has become kind of a Wheaton institution, and for good reason. They make their own ice cream in house, and even during the winter months they keep up to 16 flavors available. During the warmer months, I think it goes up to 32. Not many ice cream places offer that many flavors at all, let alone places that are making it themselves.
The entrance can be tricky if you’re coming in with little ones, but they have a pretty good sized indoor seating area when the weather’s not so nice. Otherwise, few things are better than ice cream outside while you walk downtown Wheaton.

The best!

Tates is a conveniently located ice cream shop on the tracks in downtown Wheaton. They churn their own ice creams, have a very colorful interior and make a good addition to the downtown Wheaton area.
It was rather difficult to get the stroller into the store, but after that I found that I had to appreciate the unique interior of the shop. The metal ceiling is painted a very bluish-​green, the walls have a very bright pink and green color, and the border between them reminded me faintly of… Dippin’ Dots. I… don’t think that’s a good association, but your mileage may vary.
The wife and I shared scoops of peach, butter toffee, blueberry and chocolate chip. The butter toffee was absolutely delicious. The bits of toffee melted into the ice cream, giving the buttery cream an extra kick. The peaches in the scoop of peach were a bit frozen, and largely stood apart from the frozen custard they were in… I was hoping for something a bit more «integrated».
I thought the scoop of blueberry would be the same way, but this time there was blueberries in every spoonful, so that was good. And the custard stood best with the mini chocolate chips.
Overall I love the look and feel of this shop, and I’d be happy to come back.

I went to Tates while spending time in the land part of Chicagoland. The place is nice. The employees were helpful and we didn’t have to wait long for our ice cream which was nice because it was super hot outside and around lunch time.
I got a dish of Chocolate Peanut Butter which was awesome! I love the balance of the sweet chocolate with the saltiness of peanut butter.
Next time I visit the western suburbs and am looking for some ice cream I’ll have to stop by Tates.

Meh, wasn’t really as impressed as I had hoped to be. Variety is there and it’s homemade but to be honest, I’ve had better and I could’ve just went to my local Baskin Robbins for this level of plain.
Neither my wife nor I were impressed enough to make a return trip all the way from Schaumburg area.

This place is beyond ridiculous. 32 unique and homemade flavors? What more could you ask for in a cute, little, old fashioned ice cream shop?!?
Although I haven’t frequented Tate’s, the couple times I’ve splurged on sweets there, the ice cream was by far some of the best I’ve ever had! My favorites are the Double Blueberry ((Fresh blueberry ice cream with blueberry swirl)), Pistachio Almond, Coconut, and Mango. Each is made with the freshest, creamiest, and most delectable ingredients out there! If ice cream isn’t your thing, there’s a small list of homemade sherbets to choose from as well. Being diabetic and knowing my limits, it makes me happy to see they have tiny portions, and tiny cones.
The customer service is fantastic, as are the prices. Tate’s knows how to do some stellar business!
In the summer time, it’s not rare to see a line out the door and around the corner. As one of downtown Wheaton’s hot spots during the warm seasons, this is to be expected. But be patient and chat with the other customers about their favorite flavors. Trust me, the wait is worth is!
Although I risk raging high sugar levels with even the littlest amount of ice cream, Tate’s is most definitely worth it. It’s not something I’d go for on a regular basis, but it’s one of my favorite treats around. ((And yes, they have pints & quarts to go too!!)

You can not go wrong with anything from Tate’s. This place has everything going for it– excellent homemadeice cream, sherbet, service, reasonable prices, and a wonderful location on Front Street. It’s one of those rare establishments where you’ll wait outside in a line during the summer and talk to the friendly people next to you about how much you love going to Tate’s, how great the ice cream is, and how the long line doesn’t matter because it’s all worth it in the end.
Grab your ice cream and enjoy it in front of the Fountains across the street. Make sure you get a waffle cone because they put milk duds at the bottom to stop the ice cream leakage. An elegant and delicious system indeed.
Well done, Tate’s. You are a credit to the name of ice cream, and perhaps humanity in general. Keep it up.

We stopped in here with the boys one afternoon after taking them to this bomb ass nearby park. Yeah… it’s that cool! Mmmmkkk!!! Anyways… this is the cutest little ice cream shop located right in the heart of gorgeous downtown Wheaton. They have a bunch of flavors of homemade ice cream and a bunch of toppings if that’s the kind of thing you like. We got two scoops in a cup, chocolate chip cookie dough and peanut butter chocolate, for the four of us to share. And let me just say… that was A LOT of ice cream! That ice cream was on point! It was so creamy, luscious (yes…I went there) and delicious! The base of the cookie dough almost tasted like butter pecan minus the pecans, SO good! And the chocolate peanut butter was sweet and salty perfection! If you have never been here… run, don’t walk to get you a scoop of frozen perfection! =]]

The ice cream here was awesome. I had the pistachio and I couldn’t have been happier. I opted for kiddy size in a cup and the portion size was just right for me.
My only small compliant was service — we weren’t greeted when we entered even though no one else was there. In fact, both people behind the counter kept their backs to us for a while before we were acknowledged. Once we were addressed though their service was speedy and with a smile.

Tates is a small place in downtown Wheaton with a few tables for you to chill at and enjoy your ice cream if you want. I believe that they have some flavors that they mix themselves, so I’m guessing that they may not be available at all times.
You can choose to have your ice cream in a sundae, banana split, sugar cone, waffle cone, or a bowl. And believe me, it doesn’t matter which choice you make, the portion sizes are rediculously huge, so make sure you’re not doing anything afterward because you will fall into an ice cream induced food coma.
I had the blueberry ice cream – DELICIOUS. It looked as delicious as it tasted too, so good that a group of anorexic girls I walked past on the street asked me where all that deliciousness came from, well, at least I think they were talking about the ice cream. ;)
I love this place, it’s inexpensive, fast, and the ice cream is super duper delicious. I recommend it to anyone who doesn’t mind destroying their body with deliciousness.

They have a great variety of flavors, and sizes.
It’s awesome b/​c they will let you get a kids size even as an adult, so get just the right amount of ice cream.
You can go crazy and get some wild flavor, but they classics as well!

Imagine walking out of the shop with two scoops of ice cream bigger than your fists. Random strangers compliment your decadence and want to know from where your ice cream emanated. You are in your glory and on the cusp of a huge sugar high.
Tate’s has the traditional flavors (chocolate and pb!!!) as well as some newer ones (birthday cake = NOT cake batter… very very sweet) (graham cracker is also very sweet). A single scoop should suffice. :) The servers are friendly and fast, and the cones are coated in chocolate and sprinkles.

I promise I did not give stars just because this is about ice cream… but I do love ice cream. Every visit to Tates has been pleasant… crowded with customers but pleasant. This seems to be a specifically busy place after baseball practice lets out. Nevertheless, the line moves quickly and I still barely had a chance to make up my mind on a flavor…
There are benches outside and a few small tables and chairs inside but being right in downtown Wheaton, on a nice day, you could just go for a walk.
Oh, and I think they do accept credit cards now. All the easier to get your ice cream fix :)
