Description

Specialties

The Bernstein Center for Visual Performance is a professional behavioral and developmental optometry practice. We specialize in diagnosing and treating visual dysfunctions that affect everyday living. At the Bernstein Center we work with patients whose issues range from learning related vision problems, strabismus and amblyopia, and myopia control to rehabilitation from traumatic brain injury or concussion and athletic performance enhancement through the refinement of higher level visual skills.

History

Established in 2000.

In 2000, the Bernstein Center for Visual Performance was founded when the developmental and behavioral optometric services were spun off from Family Vision Care Associates, the general optometry practice founded in the early 1960’s. Dr. Ira Bernstein, former chairman of the Children’s Vision and Vision Therapy Department of the Optometric Center of New York, and who holds the rank of clinical professor emeritus at SUNY College of Optometry, and his son Dr. Paul Bernstein who is an Adjunct Clinical Professor also at SUNY, have over 75 years combined clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of visual performance deficits in students, athletes and those who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. We are one of the few locations where the doctors continue to be directly involved with delivery of the treatment services. Both doctors have lectured extensively to local, regional and national audiences.

Meet the Business Owner

Paul B.

Business Owner

Dr. Paul is a developmental optometrist (also referred to as a behavioral optometrist) — an optometrist who has advanced training and been Board Certified to provide Vision Therapy services.

Dr. Paul was born in Mt. Vernon, NY, and then moved to Rye Brook, NY where he attended Ridge Street Elementary School and Blind Brook High School. He received his undergraduate education at Franklin and Marshall College, and ultimately, attained the degree of «Doctor of Optometry» from S.U.N.Y. — State College of Optometry.

Dr. Paul’s passion for health care came early — working for his father in the office during high school — and then as an EMT while he was in college.

Using vision therapy to enhance sports performance is one of his special interests — he played baseball throughout college. Dr. Paul’s wife, and their two daughters share his life-long love for sports.

Helping patients achieve to their full potential is what motivated him to found the Bernstein Center for Visual Performance.
