IYE: Yelpers Head To Uptown Whitter

Unilocal OC and Unilocal LA East came together at Uptown Whitter to create a IYE (Intern Unilocal Event). Jeni C., Ryan C., the Unilocal team, Local Fixtures, vendors, and entertainment organized an amazing event! THANK YOU SO MUCH! This event aimed to help support the Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter. A $ 10 dollar donation to make a difference in people’s lives.
This was my first time attending a intern Unilocal event! Yay! Thanks to my Uncle Vince V. for giving me the opportunity to be his plus one! You rock Uncle!!! Woot woot! We need more future niece and Uncle bonding time soon!
It was nice running into Chric C., Quoc H., Sarah A., and Minh D. again. Always fun mingling with you guys! Also, it was great meeting Marcus L., Jackson Y., Gray G., Danny N., Queenie I., and other Unilocalers that I have missed. I hope to see you guys soon!
Vendors:
The 6740 Pub — The vendor offered vegetarian and turkey sandwiches. I did not get to try these, but it sure did look delicious!
Bizarra Capital — The vendor handed out duck tacos with habanero sauce. It was pretty delicious. Nom nom!
Village Sweets — I surely indulged my sweet tooth in the yummy treats. They have amazing fudge dipped apples, retro candies, and fudge dipped strawberries. Village Sweets has a total of 30 homemade fudge flavors.
Solid Coffee Roasters — They handed out a nitro brewed coffee or affogatos. I am not a coffee drinker, but Uncle Vince got to try their nitrogen brewed coffee. He said it was similar to Vietnamese coffee, but stronger.
The Bottle Room — The pork and bean stew was so yummy. This was my favorite.
Ryan C. was our amazing bartender for the night! (Woohoo!) We got the choice of VeeV, Caba Horchata, Stella Rosa, or water.
Entertainment:
Home Snake DJ Collective was spinning some awesome music. Uncle Vince and I really wanted to dance through out the night.
In the end, Local Fixture is a cute little store that is hip and urban. It is like a mini version of Urban Outfitters, but they offer music and entertainment during the night for people to lounge and shop at. We also raised over $ 400 to support the Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter! Woot woot! Finally we ended the night with some raffles, prizes, and happy goodbyes. Again, thank you Jeni C., Ryan C., the Unilocal team of OC and East LA, Local Fixtures, vendors, and entertainment for making such a memorable event!
NOM FOR LIFE!

There’s not much to be said that hasn’t already been written about this fantastic event! Really cool part of Whittier as my Unilocal bestie and I got to walk around a little before and after the event. Driving into Whittier, I was a little doubtful of the venue but the second I got down and starting walking towards Local fixtures with a peek of the gorgeous sunset, all fears were resolved.
It was such a sweet setup inside with each corner featuring unique jewelry, clothes or lotions. To top it off we had an awesome DJ giving us a great vibe. My eyes immediately drifted towards the jewelry section which was trendy but the handmade soaps caught my eyes before I could get too engrossed in the gold necklaces. The jasmine one smelled amazing so I had to take one home with me!
Food/​drink wise: We were able to enjoy the duck tacos with avocado cream sauce and the Italian sausage soup which was amazing. A little bit of smoked sausage (I think) went perfectly with the white beans and bacon, I wish I had gone back for seconds. The club sandwich was also delightful and I loved the crunch of sprouts in it. The horchata had a strong kick to it but definitely tasty and I loved that Ryan was serving all the helpers– what a great CM!
The nitro Brazilian coffee from BrewSolid was amazing. Probably one of the best cups of coffee I’ve had in a long time– earthy, not the least bit acidic and oh so smooth going down. Amazing. The shirts advertising the coffee shop were equally amazing, turns out they do shirt printing in the store as well as business cards so will definitely be keeping that in mind!
Awesome event and I loved mingling with fellow Unilocalers as always. OC you sure know how to give us a good time!

Great event. All eateries providing samples were so friendly and the food was tasty. Although it was such a hot evening outside, the temps inside were comfortable.

Great excuse to visit Whittier and hang with some Elites. Lovely event benefiting Women and Children’s Crisis Center. (On the night, we raised in excess of $ 400, by the way.) Great treats from some friendly and fun merchants and purveyors of all things cool: Village Sweets
served a variety of fudge. Loved it on top of a big apple. They are one of the cool places located on nearby Greenleaf. The coffee and affogato were tasty offerings… though I only heard about the latter. I was pretty satisfied already! Thanks, Solid Coffee Roasters

Duck tacos and pork-​based chili from Colonia and Bizarra Capital Mexican. Holy porker, this stuff was good. Pork-​belly and bacon met with white beans and toppings such chives and aleppo pepper (an Eastern Mediterranean red pepper that’s stripped of its seeds… still potent). Wow, I love when there’s something I never knew about like that.

, a cool, urbane knickknackery for the discerning Hipster parent or contemporary thereof. Live DJs added to the bright vibe of the evening. Jeni C. knocked it out of the park with this one. So, congrats all around! And thanks for introducing me a bit to Uptown Whittier.

My husband and I had the pleasure of attending this Unilocal event thrown by OC’s very own Ms. Jeni C. this past Tuesday evening. Whittier isn’t exactly the first city that come to mind for a happening to place, but after this event, I actually would consider coming back out to Uptown Whittier (the only reason why I would ever come to Whittier before was to visit my brother in law, but not to ever hang out in the area).
After we checked in and dropped our $ 10 («suggested») donation, we were greeted by one of the many owners of the Local Fixture store and some of the vendors providing delicious eats. We also were lucky enough to have the famous Ryan C. pour out drinks for us (as he was playing bartender for the night). The eats and treats we had were:
— Bizarra Capital: Duck Tamales= This was my favorite bite of the evening. The owner who served us told me that actually a part of Mexico actually eats a lot of duck, which I never new about and found quite surprising. He was definitely quite friendly and the duck was just so moist and flavorful all on its own.
— Village Sweets: Fudge and Fudge Dipped Apples= We tried this chocolate and marshmallow covered apple and a few pieces of fudge, all of which were quite rich (but in a good yummy way). I remember seeing Village Sweets a year or 2 back when I ate at this one restaurant in Whittier and had chicken wings but did not go in. So when I saw this vendor, I immediately recognized the name. The owner told us how he made his caramel apple pops and how to make them so that they will hold (I told him how I have made mine and he gave me some pointers, which was totally awesome of him).
— The 6740 Pub: Sandwiches= The first vendor in the line up to provide some eats. The owner offered a vegetarian sandwich and a turkey club sandwich. Both were pretty standard (but again, in a good way… sometimes a gal just wants a good hearty sandwich that doesn’t have to be a designer/​gourmet all jazzed up). He was pretty friendly as well.
— Solid Coffee: Nitro Cold Brew and Coffee Floats= I am not a coffee fan at all. I am a milk and sugar kind of gal with just a bit of coffee added if you know what I mean. I have never had a coffee float before and decided to try that and still didn’t do it for me (again, not a coffee person). But my husband did like the coffee here but kept telling me all night long how strong he thought the coffee was (he didn’t sleep until 4 am the next morning!). This vendor was so friendly and told us about their tasting room (which we have plans to check out in the future… I will just probably have to have the coffee float sans the coffee I suppose) located nearby. They do not have a store quite yet though, but hope to in the future.
— The Bottle Room: Pork ‘N Beans= The pork belly and beans was quite filling and delicious. This was my husband’s favorite eat of the night. The pork and the pork belly definitely had a great flavor in this chili. The owner was also very friendly and scooped up an extra bit of pork belly for my husband.
For the rest of the time, my husband and I just perused the store and read through some of their funny books and random pictures and things. It was a pretty low key night and glad to have been apart of it (even though I did not win anything from the raffle… I rarely win at these things). Even had the sighting of Katie B. (with one of her famous arm squeezes) & Nitar L. at the event as well.
Thank you again Jeni C. for putting together this event and to Local Fixture for opening your doors and the wonderful vendors for providing the food and entertainment. Will definitely look at Whittier in a different light now as a place to dine and shop.

5.01 stars, My first time attending a OC/​LA East event. Kudos to Jeni, props to Ryan, I saw Katie B too and in our favorite Taste-Made’er Nitar.
Some people call me a border-​brother because I live seconds away from the OC, I am right on the border of Unilocal LA East and Unilocal OC. Sometimes my area needs a burst of energy, like what Unilocal did tonight.
I heard some music playing that I wanted to dance since I took like 3 or 4 salsa classes, lol. This is a place I want to shop.

Anywhoo, great job by Jeni C to put some light into a place that is not considered hot spot like DTLA or similar hot spot areas. I commend her, here in my backyard, the border of LA/​OC, I see potential and hope people will come back and patronize the businesses to inspire more growth.

When I saw that they carried Filson in stores, I knew that they were selling good quality goods here. What a great event to help out a local charity and to showcase the different businesses around the Uptown Whittier area. I’m right over the hill and haven’t had the inclination to explore Whittier enough.
The event was great. There was a dj playing music. Great food and drinks provided by the 6740 (great sandwiches loved the sprouts in it), Bizarra Capital Mexican (tender duck tacos with a hibiscus/​habanero sauce), The Bottle Room (loved the pork and bean stew; probably my favorite of the night; I had thirds), Village Sweets (nice fudge) and Solid Coffee (tasty affogato)
Thanks Jeni C. for putting together this event. I came away buying a candle for a friend!

Had a great time at this event. It was smaller, and much more intimate than the ones I’ve attended in the past, but that just meant you got to meet and mingle with more Unilocalers. The highlights for me were the pork and beans served by the Bottle Room guys, and the caramel apples and fudges by Village Sweets. Came back for seconds they were so good. Mike from 6740 had some awesome club, and veggie sandwiches. We went to the 6740 bar just before attending the event and Mike, who owns the bar, gave us a couple beers which was gracious of him. My buddy Robert A. won a gift certificate to Lovell’s during the raffle. We all helped raise over $ 400 for a women’s shelter, and got to see a glimpse of the local old town Whittier community. After speaking with the vendors you could really tell they actually liked each other and promoted each others business’s, and shared a unique camaraderie. Thanks to Jeni C. for putting on this fantastic event!

Unilocal! A wonderful event that introduced me to the nice little downtown area of Whittier, California. Highlights for me were the pork and beans and nitro tapped fresh coffee brew… as I am currently graduating from my coffee snob classes, I am excited to say this is one of the best cups I ever had. Check out BrEw SOLID for cool people, fresh roasts, and great cups.
On top, having the venue at Local Fixture was dope. Cool boutique with clothes and gifts for everyone — I took advantage of the 15% discount and picked myself up a hat and t-​shirt.
Great work Unilocal Interns for putting on a top notch event!

What a great event! Thank you Local Fixture for hosting the event. The store have alot of interesting books and wide selection of gifts for all ages. We got to try a lot of delicious food (6740 pub – sandwiches, Bizarra Capital – duck tacos, Village sweets, Solid Coffee Roasters – affogatos and nitro cold brews and the Bottle Room– pork and beans) My fav would be The Bottle Room, pork and beans. There was an awesome DJ spinning throughout the night along with tasty food from nearby eateries. Thank you also to Local Fixture for hosting this event in their store! Their store was like an Urban Outfitters but with better quality items. Loved their one of a kind cards, books, trinkets, organic soaps and lotions… items around the store that are great not only for gift giving but also for treating oneself!

Each food vendor was very passionate about what they were serving and wanted to engage everyone. All the food were simply amazing. Loved the vibe!
One of the local eatery owners was weary on getting involved in a Unilocal event but he changed his mind and I am very glad that he sees Unilocalers in a better light. He kept mentioning that business owners «bend» to Unilocalers due to reviews but seeing this type of event and etc, he was excited and glad to have been able to participate in the event.
The total vibe was great. Very relaxing. Delicious food, wonderful people, chill atmosphere, what else can one ask for? How could I also forget? There was a raffle at the end of the night as well! Some prizes included Unilocal ice cube trays, Unilocal glasses, and etc.
Never knew that Uptown Whittier was such a happening place! Excited to find another local gem.

What a blast! Great people, community and environment! We arrived early and Jeni directed us to find a local bar, which we did. Had a great time at The 6740, which was a divey and hipster bar with plenty of art and beer on tap, oh let me not forget to mention the great food on the happy hour menu.
After we spoke with the own from the establishment, we swung by to the event and had a great experience. Meet owners from the food joints and really felt welcomed to be there. Plenty of refreshments and eats made me smile with joy. I even won a prize and that made it well worth while!
Can’t wait for the next event!

I must say, I am very pleased I made the journey here to Whittier for this event! Everything from the atmosphere to the location (Local Fixture) to the people (hey hey LA East & OC! ;) was spot on. I loved how all the vendors (Solid Coffee, Bizarra Capital, Village Sweets, The 6740 Pub, and The Bottle Room) were spaced out all around LF, so it gave everyone an opportunity to mingle in between enjoying all the goodies.
this is my first IYE and I was very impressed! Jeni, you did a great job organizing and it was so great getting to mingle with other Unilocalers from a different area :)
My favorite things of the night were the Nitro Cold Brew from Solid Coffee and the Pork ‘n’ Beans from the Bottle Room. Ohmygawd. I was in heaven tonight: delicious food, super ahhmazing coffee, plenty of opportunities to shop to my heart’s desire, while being surrounded by my favorite people?!

At the event, I was joking to Sarah A and Minh D that this venue felt like an Asian Urban Outfitters. The familiar books and accessories, which can be described as kitschy or vintage. RIGHT?
Forget the tasting event for a moment. Tonight was about something more than that. We’re out to support an important local non-​profit organization geared towards helping victims of domestic violence and their families — The Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter. With the recent issues surrounding the NFL, its very relevant. A ten dollar donation goes a long way people. (

I’m liking the vibe here. Even when Vince V wins two gifts in one night. How’s that guy always taking home a doggie bag? He’ll probably rap about it in his review. COOL.
Yeah, I know. The weather has been blistering hot. Still, the DJ is spinning, while the drinks are pouring (thanks Ryan C), and we Unilocalers do what we do best. Having that sense of community and support that brings us together. The food helps too.
The Bottle Room, Bizarra Capital, and Village Sweets — you got it going on. You know the game we play at these things — match the face with the name. Much appreciation to those who recognized me. Nice to finally meet ya. To those I know, who continue to attend these events and make memories with me — you guys are amazing.

Another well planned Unilocal event. I like the fact that the $ 10.00 donation goes to the Women’s & Children Crisis Center of Whittier, thanks Dolores! Also thanks to Jen C. for making this event happen, and thanks to David for using his Local Fixtures retail store to host the event. His store sells fine gifts such as candles, books, cards, lotions, and shavers. It’s a worthwhile trip to drive into Old Town Whittier to check out what he has in his store.
Also, thanks to all the local food vendors around the old town business district for their generosity on sharing their food in the Unilocal event taste test. Everything was awesome.
The foods that I tried was the cheese club sandwich, the pork and beans, the tamarind candy apple, the pumpkin spice fudge, nitro coffee drip, and the most memorable was the alcohol horchata in a container.
Each food vendor was very knowledgeable about their food. They gave us a fine presentation about what they have to offer, and what makes their food unique. I believe every business there had a great concept about what it takes to be unique in their industry.
I really appreciated their time and generosity. I will definitely visit their store from the business cards I have collected.
The event was well organized. I hope everybody donated for a good cause as the crisis center raised over $ 460.00.
There was also raffles at the end where people won prizes from the tickets they got after their donation. I didn’t win anything… oh well. hahaha.
But it’s always better to help others in need… especially after what God has blessed many of us with!

OMG! What a great time! Not only were we serving but had a smashing good time. Jason and David, the owners were very cool to have all of us in there shop. Not only were they cool, but all the Unilocal guests were super cool as well. The Bottle Room, (us) served Pork n Beans, a concoction of Italian White Beans, Italian Pork Sausage, Bacon and Pork Belly, and I have to say,…everyone loved them. Events like this make me love our community as well as Unilocal more and more.

I love Uptown Whittier! I hike Hellman Trail in Whittier often and dined once in this area and thought it was nice, i have to check this area out more so when this event came up, bam, i was soooo there! I’M IN!!!
The venue was at Local Fixture on Bright Avenue and Jeni hosted the event. Thanks Jeni and Local Fixture! Wow, what an awesome place to have it at, Local Fixture is a shop with unique items such as organic soaps, lotions, jewelry, cards, books, clothing, games, etc. I loved looking at all the items and browsing the entire store, hey i’m coming back! Really loved it here, so unique!
Some of the local businesses were in the house too and we sampled some of their delicious concoctions and i loved everything and will try to hit them all one by one. Loved everything, Great sandwiches at The 6740 Restaurant, yum-​mie, Ryan was bartending tonight (woohoo, thanks Ryan!!), Bizarra Capital Mexican Restaurant was serving up some great tacos, yowza, The Bottle Room had this totally AWESOME pork and beans stew, omg it was to die for! (i went back for a second serving, shhhh) and the off the chain coffee, woohoo, hip hip, hooray for Solid Coffee Roasters.
I loved the DJ, he was jammin’ and kudos to The Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter for being out there raising money for victims of domestic violence. Unilocalers good job supporting the cause.
