History
Established in 1996.
Karkula’s first store opened in Brooklyn New York on Atlantic Avenue under the original name of Breukelen. The design shop was an instant success and was awarded Best New Shop in New York Magazine. In 1999, the first modern furniture was opened in the Meat Packing District. The company’s name Breukelen was changed to Karkula in 2003.
Karkula’s furniture showroom in Tribeca is known for its well edited and curated furniture, flooring and lighting collection from Designers around the world.
Meet the Business Owner
John Erik K.
Business Owner
John Erik Karkula, originally born in New York city but raised in Atlanta Georgia, studied industrial design at Parsons School of Design. After completing his studies, John Erik and a partner Thomas Gibson opened a design shop named Breukelen (17th Dutch spelling of Brooklyn) in the borough of Brooklyn NY which focused on the designs of Brooklyn based artists and designers. In 1999, the first Manhattan location was opened as a high end modern furniture showroom showcasing the designs of local designers such as Burning Relic, Gabriella Valenzuela and Angela Adams as well as European designers such as Paola Lenti, Danskina, Eero Koivisto, Venini, Monica Castiglioni, Federica Tondato and Konstantin Grcic. The first showroom was opened in the Meat Packing District at the beginning of this neighborhood’s rise to commercial success. The Karkula furniture showroom is now located in Tribeca.
