Walking around Grand Central for work and deciding that Urban Space was just way too crowded, I headed out over to 47th to find a row of food trucks. Wonder if they come here daily, weekly? Anyway, after browsing through the Philly Steak, Med, & Lebanese which all looked interesting, I settle for this meat pie truck. I ordered the NY Sheperd’s Pie since I hadn’t had one in a while, and an apple pie. It’s a combo for $ 10. The board also says you get a soda with it, but I never got one… the guy — working alone — was so busy trying to do everything by himself, I didn’t bother to complicate his life. But that won’t win any points. As for the pie, it is really good. Maybe it was because I had to walk back to the office, but by the time I bit into it it was lukewarm. I’m giving them a pass this time since when I received it from him it was pretty piping hot. Mashed potatoes don’t do well when they’re lukewarm, but the delicious meat filling really made up for it. Same with the apple pie. The crust was a bit too chewy, but pretty darn good especially with the apple filling that was equally good. And I didn’t mind that this was only sort of warm, it tasted good that way. The $ 10 price — keep in mind the sheperd’s pie is small and apple pie is tiny — is a bit steep for what you get, but totally would have been worth it if I had gotten the«free» soda. I’ll give him a pass on that also since he was busy, but that’s 2 passes. Still, I’ll leave it at 4-stars for the deserving food.

The Pie Truck is one of my go-to food trucks. It serves freshly baked savory pies for your lunch entrée and sweet pies for dessert. At first I thought the heritage of the truck was Great Britain, but I found that they’re more in the style of Australia and New Zealand. When I say they’re freshly baked I’m not kidding-there’s an oven in the back where you can see them cooking. I asked what the most popular pie was and he said the Beef and White Cheddar Pie. I decided to order the combo, which contains one savory pie and one sweet pie for $ 10. The day I went(the truck was on 47th and Park that day) there was a summer squall approaching as I ordered and being three streets and a long avenue away from my office I was nervous. But literally within seconds of my ordering, I was presented with an insulated paper bag with my two pies. While normally I tend to judge how good a food truck is by the length of its lines, in the case of this truck that’s rule doesn’t hold. They’re just super fast. Once back in the office I opened the pies. There were no utensils and no containers, just the pies wrapped in tissue paper and a couple napkins. But this kind of works because these are a size where you can kind of eat them with your hands. I say«kind of» because for a few bites you’re definitely in danger of getting it all over your face and clothes(that’s where the napkins come in handy). I thoroughly enjoyed the meat and cheese pie. It had a diameter of about 5 inches(think a CD). The contents weren’t overly seasoned, and the chunks of beef were substantial and chewy. The crust was the star of the show. I had a similar experience with the cherry rhubarb pie. Its diameter was about 3 inches(think a mini CD). As far as portion size goes, it’s a little lighter than most food truck fare but I have to say it was thoroughly satisfying. I posted photos on my blog @ . Bottom line, it’s definitely worth a visit.

They are up in the New York Botanical Garden this weekend as part of the food truck picnic nor Mothers day weekend(when did a day become a weekend event) Has the sausage roll, the spinach roll and the vegan pie. All were wonderful. I will have to stalk yhis truck to see when it visits midtown Manhattan and get lunch. Note the Shepards pie is Beef not Lamb as is quite normal in the USA. As two great Kiwis behind the counter said. ‘you can’t get good lamb here’ NZ or Welsh Wales is where that is at. Really it’s a Cottage pie but no American knows what that is. I’m sure it is great and will order that next time I see them.

DUBPIES are sooooo delicious. Flaky crusts, perfect hand held size, served warm. And the pies are mobile in their fancy street food truck. What’s not to love? Recently DUB was outside my office. I have been meaning to try them out for a while, so I decided that pie lunch was my fate and I shouldn’t fight it. Salads can wait for Monday. I ordered the Thai Chicken Curry and the Peach combo with a latte. Both pies are 3 – 4 inches wide and at least 1.5 inches tall. They are dense, and full of tastiness. The Thai Chicken was so good. A mild green curry sauce with the bite of the pie pastry was divine. The latte was amazing(hooray counter culture coffee). The peach, eaten cold because I waited for later, was okay, but not as mind blowing. Probably would have been better to eat all three at once, but that’s what I get for trying to pace myself. The whole thing cost $ 15, which is on the high end of lunch pricing. But if you’re looking for a way to treat yourself or get a snack, DUB is a great choice. The person manning the truck that day was also a sweetheart, offering me his favorite pies when I sounded too uncertain between the 10+ options they offered that day. DUB also has Tim Tans and lovely Aussie snacks on display.

You eat pie. I eat pie. We all eat pie. Hmm, that sounds about right. Take a bite and catch a heart attack, because this is heaven. You know how much I love to eat… You know much I care, when putting goodies in my tummy. Huh, you wanna take a bite of my pie, sh%#, you better ask someone else. Their pies are hard to let go, similar to Eggo. Customer service: 5⁄5 Food: 5⁄5 Overall: 5⁄5(duh!!)
