Elite Event at Optoid Print3D

I always enjoy the «weird» elite events — and I would plop a night brunch at a 3-​D printed eyeglass shop in East Williamsburg in that category.
I was unfamiliar with the whole 3-​D printing idea — I had heard of it but had never seen it in action, and could not wrap my head around it. It is a really cool process, and since it is relatively new I wonder what kind of advances they will make with the technology in the future. Will we be riding on our futuristic 3-​D printed hover crafts and reminiscing about when we were at this Unilocal event?
The food was cute and there was enough to go around and the drinks were flowing. Peter D assumed the role of champagne fairy and made sure everyone’s drink was topped off. AKA made sure I stayed out too late after the event and woke up with a hangover. It was a good night, great to see some familiar faces and cool to learn about something new.

This was a wonderful, creative, innovative event based in Optoid Print3D in Brooklyn, where they use 3D printing to create custom glasses with a brunch theme. The space is a bit small, but we were able to pack quite a few Unilocalers in! We received the Unilocal Elite mini chargers and even cooler, our own personalized (with our name on the side) 3D printed monocle! Mine was a beautiful light blue color.
Already prepared were mimosas (I don’t drink so the lady gave me a huge cup of orange juice instead), cut fruit– watermelon and papaya, as well as cream cheese and salmon roll (uncooked salmon, so I didn’t partake of that either).
The chef made mini chocolate chip pancakes and blueberry pancakes which had a bit of maple syrup on top and was sprinkled with powdered sugar. The pancakes, especially the chocolate chip ones were amazing, addictive, awesome… I loved the taste of the sweet chocolate melting in my mouth, along with the perfectly fluffy pancakes. The blueberry ones were actually blue and had great flavor as well.
Also on the menu were little crostini bites of steak and quail egg on toasted bread. The chef prepared everything on the spot, so we got to see him slice the steak and remove the quail egg from the shell, which is no simple task because the egg is so tiny. Most of the steak was too rare, fatty and chewy for me but the ones that were more well done and leaner were absolutely delicious, however I don’t think the egg had a particularly memorable flavor. Nevertheless, the chef did a wonderful job preparing all the small bites!
We also got to see a pair of glasses being printed in the 3D printing machine on the spot, which takes about 3 hours total so we didn’t get to view the finished product, but it was cool to see the layering process.

When one «sees the future» in 3d technology, their mind might be blown. I came in late (thanks mta) but dropped in just in time to hear the last bit about how this fine establishment uses Computer Aided Design and a 3d printer to make eyeglass frames!
Apparently the finishing process is in «the basement» but I declined the tour.
Big thanks to providing snacks and drinks… and monocles! I’m pretty sure the writing was small because they wanted us to come bacj for an eye exam!

Graham Avenue is getting a taste of gentrification, and within a few years, this place will be as untouchable as the rest of Williamsburg. This small and intimate Elite Event actually allowed me to meet some new and fun Elites (shout outs to Jessie and Andrew!) which was great not having to scream over loud background music. Dr. James, the mastermind of the whole operation, and the one and only 3D printed eye doctor around, was a very welcoming and informative host.
For brunch eats we had: mini pancakes!!! Blueberry and chocolate chip (I wish there was syrup around; they were a little dry). The salmon rolls with fresh dill on top were very addicting, and the fresh watermelon made it really feel like brunch. But, what brunch is complete without mimosa? The champagne was flowing, and Peter D. found you if your glass was half empty. Excellent!
One star was removed for the steak. It was just too chewy for me, and the poached egg on top was a great fun nod to Portuguese cuisine that I have gotten accustomed to working in Newark. Great concept, but needed something more — maybe more flavor or a sauce? It just had me wanting something else.

Who knew you could get great brunch at the optometrist’s? Unilocal apparently! Optoid rolled out the red carpet for this super unique event and deserve major props for creativity. It was great to hear the story of the space from the doctor/​co-​owner himself and for everyone to get to ask some questions about his process. What seems to make Optoid truly unique is their combination of optometry services + modern tech and style. Optoid’s optometrist can not only check your eyes, he’s also a 3D designer, so everything is custom designed and built in house! If you didn’t think Made in Brooklyn custom craftism could come to your doctor’s office, well Optoid just proved you wrong.
It could have been easy to get bored quickly in this kind of environment, but Optoid kept us entertained with live 3D designing, cool custom 3D printed monocles to play with, and delicious night brunch/​night booze. Big thanks to the Optoid staff and especially the caterer for keeping the food and drinks flowing smoothly (and deliciously). I was beyond impressed when the Chef managed to skillfully slice open tiny quail eggs onto steak crostinis despite the pressure of Unilocal Elite armor piercing stares. Total grace under pressure, surviving Unilocal Elite feeding time is definitely resume worthy!
I always love when we get to do something out of the box, so thank you Peter D. and thank you Optoid!

Easily the best 3D printing, prescription glasses store, party with brunch cocktails, sushi, fruit, and crostinies, that I’ve ever been to.
Have I been to one of those before? No. With half the key words? Maybe???
Alright, no.
I’ll just say it was an interesting night.
We were greeted with lots of breakfast cocktails, which was cool. The space was limited, but thankfully a giant 3D printing machine is in the dead center of the store. I thought it should have been moved over to the side. With a market value of $ 45,000, I don’t think it should have been left in the middle of a party, and I don’t think Unilocalers should have been leaving drinks or food on top of it, but oh well.
The food served was great. I imagined it would have just been really small bites it ended up eating pretty good actually. Some salmon. Some beef and egg crostinis, and some slamming mini pancakes.
Everyone working the vent was hospitable, friendly, and provided plenty of information about the business. I scoped out the other rooms and saw an awesome Spider-​Man framed pictured. (Posted)
I really appreciated an awesome night out from, especially because it kicked off my 25 day vacation. Thank you to everyone who worked the event. And thank you to Peter D for setting up fun and new events.

Awesome to learn that 3D printing can be combined with medicine! It was really neat to learn about a unique and innovative solution to vision problems being born in Brooklyn. And even cooler to do it with other Unilocal Elites, awesome mimosas and champagne, and delicious bites — I can eat those blueberry pancakes and steak and quail egg crostinis all day long! Thank you Dr. James and Peter D for setting this up!
