DEXSTA Federal Credit Union

I’ve always had accounts with credit unions and I realize that they are not usually as «up-​to-​date» with technology or as accesible as a larger bank, however, Dexsta really pushes the limit. I have an auto loan with them and the only way to make the payment is in the branch, in cash. It is incredibly inconvenient. I have asked if there is another way to make my payment, mailing a check, online banking, etc and there is none. They do have an online banking system but I have to «apply» in person, at the branch, and can only make payments through online banking if I have a Dexsta checking account, which due to the extreme limitations this bank has on technology and accessibility, I obviously do not. That being said, Dexsta services the loan fine, and I do not get bombarded with letters or solicitation calls. I plan on refinancing my loan within the next few months; two years of making in branch cash payments is two years too long. Keep this in mind when buying a car at the dealership, the ½% lower interest rate is NOT worth it. You will spend more money in gas and time getting to the branch to make your payment.

It’s unfortunate to see some bad reviews on here already (kind of sounds like a people problem, not a bank problem and you’re going to get that sometimes at any bank); but it’s unfortunate nonetheless!
Anyhow, I want to chime in as a happy customer.
I’ve been a member since the early 2000’s and my mom has been one since 1990.
I jumped ship back in 02 or so after having an issue with Dexsta (I don’t recall whose fault it was) and I ended up going with Commerce Bank at the time (RIP Commerce, you guys were awesome).
When Commerce Bank got bought out by TD North, everything went to hell and there were new fees, hidden fees, crappy service, etc. I decided to close my accounts and go running back to Dexsta as I was lured by the low APR credit card and the free checking. I haven’t regretted that choice since. The treat me like family when I call and the tellers are friendly. However, when I lived in DE, I only dealt with the Prices Corner branch — your results may vary at other locations. I know my mom deals with the Foulk Rd branch. My mom is a complainer and I’ve never heard about a serious incident with Dexsta, she has a house, car loan and CC with them.
I’ve moved to the Dallas region earlier this year and was perturbed that I was going to have to open a new account at a local bank and possibly not be able to keep my Dexsta as my main bank. If you think CUs in Delaware are bad then Texas has even crappier ones to choose from! Some of them don’t even have free checking and have fees! Dexsta just recently started doing mobile-​remote deposits on their mobile app and that was pretty much what made me decide to stay. The All Point network they’re on means no ATM fees in the whole country (and All Point ATMs are all over the place). They have the best loan rates and CC rates around. My only negative is that they’re not on the shared branching network of CUs, so I can’t deposit cash at a shared-​branch CU if I wanted.
So if you’re looking for a shared-​branching CU that also has great customer service and are professional, check out Louviers CU in Newark, DE. They’re smaller but just as competitive. So now you know I wasn’t paid to write this: P

I recently moved to Wilmington, and in setting up the household, I went to Dextra to join as I have been a longtime supporter of credit unions because of their usually high level of customer service. I didn’t find that here. They told me I couldn’t open an account unless I had two forms of proof that I was a resident. Even though I own a home in Wilmington, I hadn’t yet set up accounts with the local address on them except the deed, which isn’t really proof of residency.
The person who greeted me explained that the credit union charter requires the proof. I understood that and asked if they could help me in some way. That’s when a manager came out of her of her office and told me in a haughty tone the same thing the first person had told me. She didn’t offer any suggestions of how I could expedite the situation or exhibit any indication that Dextra was interested in me bexoming a member. I found this to be opposite of my previous dealings with credit unions. I don’t know if this is standard operating procedure for Dextra or this manager was having a bad day and didn’t want to suffer someone clueless about her operation.
I’m used to people being willing to at least give me advice with the prospect of my doing business with them. I guess Dextra has enough members. Luckily, I found another financial institution that was willing to help me. Needless to say, I’m doing business with them and not Dextra. I gave Dextra a second star because the first person who spoke to me tried to help me before his boss came out of her office to give me the bum’s rush.
