History

Established in 1913.

The twelve-story Italian Renaissance hotel was commissioned by DuPont Company president Pierre S. du Pont, and opened in 1913, after a two-and-half year labor of love by French and Italian craftsmen who carved, gilded, and painted this exceptional story to life. From the lavish splendor of the hotel lobby, to the shimmering majesty of the Gold Ballroom, every hue and detail speaks of a thoughtful eye and a gracious mind.

Hotel du Pont instantly earned international fame upon opening in 1913, rivalry the finest hotels of New York City and European capitals. Expansion of the property in 1918 brought further enhancements, with the additions of the Gold Ballroom and Du Barry Room, and the DuPont Theatre. Since opening, Hotel du Pont has reigned as the centerpiece of Wilmington Delaware and Brandywine Valley corporate and social life, now celebrating 100 years of being the place to see and be seen.
