University of North Carolina Wilmington

The family came to UNCW for a campus tour and all of our expectations were met — from clear signage to friendly hosts to access to departments and classes. The Office of Admissions as well as the Honors College are en pointe and very organized. Communication with the Department of Biology and Marine Biology as well as the Honors College was excellent. Questions were answered and requests were accommodated within reason.
The day began with a 30-​minute overview of the admissions process and profile of applicants at the Admissions office, then followed by a ~1.5 hour walking tour of the campus led by student ambassadors who were quite knowledgeable. I liked that we were brought inside buildings and were shown classroom sizes. The fitness center is AMAZING. The university is pedestrian– and bike/​skateboard-​friendly. The students we encountered throughout the tour were very friendly. What you won’t see is the inside of an actual dorm room. However, Admissions has a mock dorm room set up in the auditorium for your 30-​minute overview, which I thought was creative thinking on their part. The mock up was an actual replica of a dorm room with beds, desks, accessories, etc.
In addition to the regular campus visit, I contacted the Department of Biology and Marine Biology requesting to meet with a professor and/​or student within the department. The department advisor replied quickly and was happy to meet with us and also set up a meeting with a professor. Unfortunately, the tour ran long and we weren’t able to meet with the Dr. Pabst, but Melanie Canfield was great in providing an overview of the department and majors, as well as answering all of our questions.
I also contacted the Honors College and Austin Scott was just wonderful with arranging for us to observe the honors chemistry class taught by Dr. Messina, which our daughter loved. I actually think this is what sold her on UNCW. I appreciated that Austin took time with us to get to know our daughter and her interests. He also arranged for us to visit Honors House — housing for the Honors College students which was a lot better than the dorms we’ve seen at other universities.
Overall, we had a great visit to UNCW and it’s definitely on the list of colleges and universities to consider for our future marine mammal veterinarian.

As far as college goes I think this one is a bargain!
It was on the list of top 20 best bargain schools in the country. Tuition is low if you’re a state resident. The campus is compact, which I like, you can get to anywhere on campus in a 15 minute walk.
Class sizes range anywhere between 15 – 80 students per class, there is an abundance of services if you need help with anything at all, tutors, writing center, GRE prep, you name it.
It’s right near the beach so location is good!
It gets hot here in the summer but the winter is mild, so that’s a plus!
All in all, I consider this to be a good school that’s worth the price!

I am a Psychology General Masters program student. I first visited Wilmington when interviewing here for the program. All the psychology faculty that I have met are extremely friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful. I feel challenged without being overwhelmed. I feel the program will help prepare me for a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. I made the right choice!

Our trip was short, but in one weekend I was able to make 3 distinct observations about this particular university…
