Scissors Edge Salon has been proudly serving Winnetka, IL for 37 years providing premier cuts and color, and specializing in everything from classic to trendy cuts for men, women, and children. In addition to being a premier color establishment, we also offer Keratin Smoothing systems, Japanese Straightening Treatments, special occasion styling, and SoCap Hair Extensions. We are a diverse salon and spa offering other services such as eyebrow threading, eyelash extensions, airbrush tanning and more. Many of our stylists are also licensed Barbers, so our work on our male clients is masculine, even if they are long hair rock styles.

We strive to make clients feel and look their best while creating a relaxed, comfortable yet professional environment. Our homey salon is nestled in the Laundry Mall with classic exposed brick walls and hardwood floors. We promote continuing education and all of our stylists keep current with the newest trends with additional training in and out of the salon in order to offer you the best possible services.

History

Established in 1976.

Sisters, Shelly Brusso Cohen, and Andrea Brusso Blackshaw purchased Scissors Edge Salon in 1978 after working the first 2 years with the original owners. Scissors Edge Salon is family owned and operated with a team of 18 stylists that we call a total family. Half of the stylists have been there for between 25 and 32 years, and the other half, between 2 years and 10 years. Between all the stylists, the salon has over 100 years of experience to share with each other, and with our fantastic clients. Our mission is to provide professional quality salon services in a cozy and friendly environment. With over 37 years of success, we look forward to adding you to our long history of happy customers.

Owners Shelly and Andy have been in the salon industry for over 40 years and have had their work presented in various publications such as Salon Today and Pioneer Press. Their extensive training includes training with Erik Fisher of Aquage, Redken Academy, KMS Academy, Goldwell, Rusk, Martin Parsons, and hundreds of others to expand their knowledge of hairstyles. Shelly and Andy hope to provide you such a positive experience you’ll remember to return to Scissors Edge Salon when you’re in need of a fresh new look.

Scissors Edge has been a mainstay in our family for years.
The staff is professional, attentive and friendly. Shelly’s team does a great job insuring you are comfortable and that at a minimum your expectations are met, if not consistently exceeded.
Liz, Elizabeth, Jennifer and Pam, & Shelly herself, to name but just a few, are outstanding stylists and true professionals. Lana (I hope I spelled that correctly) at the reception desk is always professional, courteous & helpful.
Scissors Edge sets itself apart from their competition based on their service, quality of work and the manner in which they treat you as a customer.
Whether a haircut every 5 or 6 weeks, for a special occasion like prom, a wedding or other, Scissors Edge is a cut above the rest!

I love coming to Scissors Edge to get my hair cut and colored! Everyone is so friendly, the atmosphere is great. My stylist always gives me tips on how to keep my hair healthy and prolong the life of my color. I would highly recommend anyone at Scissors Edge.

Scissors Edge is an amazing salon in Winnetka. I started getting cuts there about 15 years ago as one of Elizabeth’s very first clients when I walked in after a manicure/​pedicure at Marlene’s Nails next door. Elizabeth has worked with me throughout multiple different changes in hair styles — from long to short and back again, heavy layers and then everything in between. She’s done multiple up-​dos as well. My kids now see her and she has salvaged half a dozen haircuts of my daughter «cutting her own hair.» And even when we had a major event when Elizabeth was out of town, I reluctantly tried someone else — they did a great job too, without even knowing my hair! It was a wedding and they did my kids hair, mine, and my moms and it was all perfect. All the stylists are great. I switch my mother over to them a decade ago, and she love their coloring and cutting, for especially corse hair with multiple colics. Thanks Scissor Edge for some amazing work!

This place is like a zoo. The owner (short loud lady) runs around like she’s a wild goose. I was there for two and a half hours and she did 2 cuts that’s it. Other than that she went from stylist to stylist to talk poorly about one of the employees whose name I believe was Shelby. She was very unprofessional and rude when I tried to ask my stylist a question she told me to not interrupt her. I got an okay cut and color, but I WILL NEVER go back and I WILL NEVER recommend them to anyone not even my worst enemy due to the lack of respect this owner has for her clients and employees…

Seriously I could not be happier! Best place ever. I came in after getting what was a horrible gone wrong ombré and I was so embarrassed by it. From the minute I walked in the door I felt relaxed. The salon is gorgeous. The girl that checked me in was so sweet. I waited only for 5 min (then again I was early for my appointment) and then I was greet by Jennifer. SHE IS PHENOMENAL! She gave me her honest opinion made my hair healthy again and was really nice. She answered all of the questions I had and walked me through each step. They are not as expensive as I thought but even if they were they would be worth every dime. Can’t wait to come back!

First off I want to say what a nice shop this is. From the friendly ladies and girls who work here, to the comforting surroundings. I have had a long relationship with Scissors Edge. I first started getting my haircut from Shelly{owner} around 1976. I have never had anything but the finest haircut. This place is professional, they don’t mess around, I see the stylists treating all customers with respect, they ask questions and take suggestions. There is hot coffee and snacks and generally it’s just a nice place to be.
If you don’t get the cut you are looking for, I’m suggesting that you have not taken an active interest in what is being done. I don’t write a ton of reviews on Unilocal,but I felt after my recent experience, I needed to share. I had not been to SE for a cut in over a year, I only go once or twice a year. The reason it had been so long was due to serious illness. My hair looked like crap recently, so I finally got around to visiting Shelly and her quaint shop. In no time I was feeling human again with a haircut that was tailored to me. Only had one haircut somewhere else in the last 37 years. I can tell you It was right back to SE. I’m happy to have something in my life that stays good all these years, because not much does. I treasure this place! Getting a great haircut is not a given by any means, so when a place, a person who does it as good as Scissors Edge, you hold on tight.
Go here, give them a chance, be articulate you won’t be sorry. Complaining afterword does nothing be active know what you want, that makes a huge difference not just here but in life.

Scissors Edge is super convenient, easy to get an appointment and reasonably priced. Larissa does wonders with short hairstyles! I’ve been going there for 4+ years, and I really appreciate her recommendations (through my red, brunette and blonde phases). She keeps me looking my best. Yes, the place can be loud and they serve lots of kids and men — so it’s more a full-​service salon than a relaxing spa environment. Works for me!

Words cannot express how much I love this place.
This salon is on the nicer side of salons and is very boutique-​y. It is very open and spacious as well as friendly environment. The receptionist is really friendly and I’m able to get a quick appointment that fits in my schedule. They have later appointments too, so it is really convenient for anyone who works a little later.
I have been going here for quite some time now and trust each and every hairstylist there. (Shelly and Carol especially). One thing that really impressed me about Shelly is that she takes her time with your hair and really cares about her work. At the end of the haircut or style, she will ask you if you like it and if you don’t, she will fix it, right then and there. Her day is not complete if her clients aren’t happy. She is incredibly talented and the funniest stylist I have ever had. Going into my hair cut it is always entertaining. She is always cracking jokes and full of energy.
Whenever I have a special occasion, I have them cut and style my hair. They even give me tips on how to do it myself as well as product recommendations.
Overall, I love the staff, the atmosphere and the fact that Starbucks is in the same building, always a bonus in my opinion! I would highly recommend this salon and everyone who works there. 5 stars!!!

I had an unbelievable experience at Scissors Edge in Winnetka. Not only because the Global Brazilian hair straightening treatment that I had done there has been life changing (it cut my blow drying and flat ironing time in half and made my hair a lot silkier and smoother) but because of the atmosphere, décor and service I received at the salon. First of all, this is not your typical salon. It has hard wood floors, exposed brick and warm paint colors all around. They even serve Mint Milano Pepperidge Farm Cookies in the waiting area (a childhood favorite of mine)! The ambiance made me feel like I was sitting in a comfortable living room of a family member’s house. Also, my stylist, Carol, was great. She was very professional and explained the Global Brazilian process to me but she was also very personable. I felt like I knew her for years when in fact it was my first time in the Salon. Most importantly, I really love what they did with my hair. I will DEFINITELY be going back there.

Thick, fine, dense hair? Nancy does a great job on my daughter’s jungle hair. I’d give Nancy 4 solid stars, losing only one star for consistency.
For the overall establishment, Scissor’s Edge is fine, solid 3 (plus?) stars.
First time visitor? Think efficiency, high volume — not a lot of room to wait, lots of activity right in front of you. Expect to see lots of moms taking kids for haircuts. Mild managed chaos at check-​in/​check-​out.
Prices seem in line with the experience — but the whole «we don’t put tips on credit cards» stuff I find really annoying and potentially inconvenient and embarrassing when short of actual bills.

I have been coming here for as long as I can remember. Although I have gotten my hair cut elsewhere, between going away for College and moving to California for a few years, it was bound to happen, but I always kept coming back, to the point where I would schedule trips home around when I needed my next hair cut!
Andy is the best, and always does a great job, and Elizabeth is the best colorist I have ever been to. Shelly did my hair for a wedding and did an amazing job.
Everyone gets a bad haircut once in a while, but I can honestly say that I have never had that experience here. From fixing horrible haircuts, to managing to get my hair back to it’s normal color after a bad at-​home dye job, they have always saved the day and made me look great!

My entire family got our hair cut here for many years, until I complained loudly enough to get a new stylist. The rest of my family ended up following suit. I feel badly giving Scissors Edge a bad review, mostly because the salon is clean and well kept up, and the people who worked there are genuinely nice. However, our stylist just didn’t know how to give a good haircut. I ended up with the same long, unkempt, unstyled mane for years because it seemed like all the stylist was capable of was chopping inches off of the back.
They also didn’t really seem to listen very well to our wants, as one time my mom asked for a new style and brought in a picture, and our stylist cut maybe two layers in it instead of doing the full cut. When my mom asked why she hadn’t changed it our stylist replied that she was afraid my mom wouldn’t like it. Of course, that would be my mom’s problem for picking the style, not the stylist’s fault!
Terminating our relationship with the stylist was awkward too. At some point upon moving on to other salons, our now former stylist called our home and asked why we hadn’t made any appointments. Even though she’d been cutting our hair for years, it still made for a very awkward, not very professional conversation.
I’d only recommend someone go here if they want a very basic style, but you can probably get the same easy style done for half the price at a Super Cuts franchise. Sorry Scissors Edge, as much as I want to like your posh salon, your cuts just don’t make the grade.

I’ve been here half a dozen times in my life… they are 0⁄6. I don’t mind spending solid money for a haircut, but I’ll never set foot in here again. This place is an explosion of low-​cut shirts, hairspray, and screaming women and children.
I don’t like passing this place in the Laundry Mall, for fear of even potentially having my hair (or more likely my throat or ear) cut.
For the little «me» time I have during the week, I don’t want it wasted here, getting a horrible haircut.

Imagine putting a bowl on your head, then running the rest of your hair through a cheese grater, then an overly confident woman slaps the signature jersey shore gel on your hair and your face. Honestly, worst haircut ever. After reading the other Unilocal reviews on this place; credibility lost! The stylist at this place took no time to understand how my hair is and just went straight for a cookie cutter style without telling me anything she was doing in the process. Not only did she completely disregard what I told her how about how i wanted my hair, she seemed to have absolutely no remorse for the clearly disappointing job she had done. I was charged $ 31 dollars, which seemed like a great price compared to other places I usually go, but I’ve had multiple better experiences at Hot Cuts for half the price compared to Scissors Edge. Also, she never showed me anything she was doing on my hair besides what I could see with my head bent down the whole time. Even after she was finished, she didn’t even show me the back, which I found out looked like the back of a toy Lego man’s hair. But it was too late to fix anything by then because she had already taken off 80% of my hair when I kept telling her not to take too much off.

I got my hair cut with Crystal just yesterday and I am SO happy with it. I had a nightmare experience at a salon on division that I went to that shall remain unnamed — but Crystal really listened to what I wanted and what type of lifestyle I lead to give me the perfect cut. Also, I got my eyebrows waxed with Angela and am EXTREMELY happy with them. I love this place !

Growing up I used to come to this place whenever the hair got out of control. Ike was always there to give me the «New Trier». Ike has moved on to Florida, but the women who remain are both beautiful and talented. I now live in the city and its more convenient to get my haircut down there, but this place is the place to go if you need a trim. The prices are a bit high, but the service is always friendly.
