Edward McKay Used Books

We had a complaint. The person in charge said nothing. The female employees would talk back rude and yell and us. We not buy anything. We went to other places and got less expensive books. The location is hard to drive in. And the parking lot is short and narrow. We had to park at a business next door. The young white obese female who wait on not display any manners. We took our business elsewhere where it is appreciated.

Very rude staff. I had a bunch of texts books that I wanted out of the house so I took them there. The first lady was very rude, very soft spoken and if I would ask her what she said it’s like she got offended. Second guy told me not to set my very large stack of books on the counter to go somewhere else to check with that sales associate. In the end didn’t buy any books which is totally fine, just maybe try not being so rude to consumers who still shop in your store.

I enjoy Ed McKay’s because I can often find movies, books and music at very cheap prices. I love browsing the aisles to see what they have in stock because it changes daily. I’ve also brought old books and movies here to exchange for store credit or cash! I can’t beat that! I’ve found vinyl records, steel book movies and even college books here. The customer service is great and they’re very helpful too. They have TVs to show who’s name they’re calling when exchanging items so you can walk around and not miss your name being called. I definitely think they’re a hidden gem that everyone must check out st leastbonce

This place has books music vinyl records and board games and so much more. They also buy used books music DVDs etc. I only wish they had a bigger selection of vinyl records.

Do pretty good when getting movies somewhat knowledgeable but if your looking for horror movies not so good have a hard time getting the likes of B movies, J movies, syfi, Cult, Soft Erotica Horror, Euro Horror and no one knows anything about the Horror movies if you ask is this one any good

Love this store, but expected textbooks to be a little more reasonable. Thought the prices on those were quite high, especially for used.

This is a store where you can go in and stay for a couple of hours browsing new, used, and discounted books along with CD’S & DVD’S. I like the different sections of this store… I must admit the store doesn’t have their free books and free VHS’s anymore but the price is reasonable…

I LOVE this store. They have a huge selection of books, CDs, and DVDs/​blu-​rays. Maybe I am the only one but I HATE reading on a tablet or laptop. I would much rather have a hard copy. They are wall to wall with merchandise. The price is right and the atmosphere is great. I could spend all night in this store looking around or reading. I am definitely a regular.

This is a great place to get used, but not terribly worn books. Whenever I am assigned a book annotation project for school or just feel like finding another good classic, I know where to go! They also sell awesome music CD’s, records, movie DVD’s, video games, handheld technology devices, and various counter trinkets.

I have a slight obsession with this place.
The books are all in wooden looks like recycled boxes which I love! & they have records hanging in part of the store & I of course love that also.
My mom hates going with me because I could spend hours here looking for books & I can never leave with just 1 book I need like 3 or 4. For that reason I don’t frequent here. My book shelf barely has anymore room. I’ve found the prices to be very fair especially for the books I’ve bought. I’ve never sold anything there so I can’t comment on that.

They are usually overpriced on cds and video games. Once in a while you find a deal. They have no way of looking up a title so that is annoying– you literally have to search through genres to find what you are looking for. And whoever sorts the bands into their genres is not very good: P We do find deals on obscure titles. Have traded a couple times and not gotten very much– but that is prob the norm nowadays. Quirky staff– as well as clientele… I usually don’t like to hang out too long. :)

Love this place! They always have an amazing selection of movies and graphic novels to choose from. I rarely go unless I have something to trade in, and when I do trade stuff in I’m almost 80% of the time disappointed from the value I get back. I traded in an art book that had a nice hard cover slip along with a comic book and two movies and they only gave me 8 bucks… when I know they will sell that art book for about $ 40. Well anyway, the staff is always friendly but sometimes play their music a little too loudly. Some of the older patrons may not feel welcome with death metal blaring in their ears… just saying!

Still dig this place, but they inexplicably yanked the free shelf with zero explanation about a year ago. Disappointed that they’d take away such a popular facet to an otherwise very customer-​friendly business. Take away unique stuff like that and you’re essentially a Barnes and Noble with worn-​out books and more neon hair behind the counter.

A good used book and media store in Winston-​Salem. It’s super cheap, but of course, this means the selection is hit or miss. You only get what people give.

Where else do you go to browse a great selection of used media? This is as good as it gets!

Well, I sucked it up and went back to Ed McKays and it keeps going down hill, IMHO. I had three (3) DVD box sets that I wanted to sell Total of about 15 discs. Someone had just come in and dropped off about 4 big boxes of books.
Now, this was early in the morning, about 9:30. I was told it would be an hour as they HAD to do the 4 boxes first. What? really? I mean, they had three or four people working on it. They couldn’t spare one person to handle other customers? I was told that was the way they did things. ok. So, I dropped them off and figured I was going to give them 30 minutes and I’d just take them to a used DVD store in Charlotte (as I was going there anyway). Well, 30 minutes later, they were done
Really, I DO wish SOMEONE would open a competing shop in Winston. They seem to care less and less about customer service, the prices are cheaper on Amazon and they seem to have less and less in stock (as the «cream» of what they take in winds up online to be sold).
Sad.

Great place to visit, and to happen upon some unexpected gem. Not any cheaper than
, but worth a trip every now and again. I took some friends from out of town (it was my first time too) and they really enjoyed it!

If you’re a book junkie like me then this place is perfect. You can walk out with a stack of nearly new books for a great low price. I keep going back over and over!

Great place, great selection, great prices. Winston-​Salem is the smallest of the 4 stores, but that just means it’s more typical of a used book store instead of *HUGE*
Between books and DVDs I’ve easily bought 200+ things at the 4 stores. 90% were things I went in knowing I wanted, the rest were surprise finds (which are always great!).
In DVDs especially if they have a lot of stock the later ones will be priced lower, so if you see more than one check them all and pick the best price!
They also have a huge selection of video games, especially older games at good prices (instead of «this is a collector’s item» prices.)
Expect to spend an hour or more unless you are *really* good at walking in, checking for exactly what you want, and then leaving. If you «just look around» it’ll take you a while!
They also purchase items. You bring in a box, wander the store for a bit while they dig through it, then go back to the check-​out to find out what they’re giving back and what they’re paying. They choose what to take based on demand, and their stock levels — so sometimes it’s hard to figure out why they take what they do, but they have a good system and it’s working so go with it :-)

If you’ve ever shopped at multiple used bookstores, you know that they’re usually not the most brilliant of places. A lot of old books around with that faint smell of… well,. most of the times it’s cigarettes.
Well, no different here. But EM is probably one of the largest selections I’ve seen, and one of the few that also have shifted their selections beyond books (DVDs, games, audio books, music, etc).
Have never sold things there, but I hear that it’s pretty quick and they give you cash or store credit. I have also heard that store credit is only on that slip of paper you have, so don’t lose that or else you’ll be in a world of you know what if you want to redeem it.
Overall, it’s probably one of the better used bookstores I have ever been to and that’s saying something. They could use a better system of sorting and such, but hey… can’t complain really when the selection is as vast as theirs.
