Taste of New Orleans

I really liked the Taste of New Orleans. Ive been to NOLA and Ive had really good gumbo at a few places there, and this place is really good too. The gumbo was made with really dark roux, their were no big chunks of veggies but you could definitely taste the holy trinity in there along with the okra, shrimp (or maybe crawdads) and chicken. I also had their Swamp Balls. The waiter said they didn’t like the way their previous vendor was making them, so they started making them themselves. They were crispy and flavorful, not greasy or mushy at all. If you like bread pudding, you will love their bread pudding. If you love bread pudding, you will be in heaven. Its rich and buttery, not overly sugary. I could smell the rum in the rum sauce, but the flavor was very subtle while eating it.
The meals came with french bread, sausage and a potato with cata bay (sp?) sauce. It was spicy but not too much that it overpowered the other flavors. I will definitely go there next time we are in the Dells.

I’m not a big seafood fan, but I went with a group that was, and we found the food to be a tasty, unusual. We made the mistake of sitting outside on a humid day, so the assaults by flies were distracting to say the least. The service was helpful, and we knew right away from our server’s accent that the food was going to be authentic Cajun fare.
I tried the chicken Cordon Bleu, which had plenty of spice but wasn’t too hot for the faint of heart. It was topped with a little shrimp and crabs for extra flavor. Other meals included the alligator, which was good enough that our friend worked through a bit of a shellfish allergy after he realized it had a shrimp-​crawfish topping. My wife loved her shrimp/​crab meal but had trouble settling her finicky stomach afterwards.
The only meals under $ 12 were sandwiches, which felt a little pricey, but then again, it was seafood in the Dells, which made it reasonable by comparison.

Crawfish was exceptional, service was decent, but too expensive even for Wisconsin Dells. The rest of the food was average though. I would come back for the crawfish but that is the only reason.

The food was very bad it tasted like it was frozen and then microwaved. It was overpriced even for the Dells. I would have given the place 2 stars if the unkept looking owner wasn’t sitting in his «office» (a chair, a table, and a laptop in the main dining area) and stairing at us while we ate. An old woman who appeared to be the wife/​co-​owner yelled at my kids for standing near the water fountain. The waitress was new and didn’t know the menu too much, but she was at least pleasant. A subpar waitress service was actually the best part of our experience, and that’s sad. This is by far the worst restaurant I have been to in a long time.

First time here. At first I was not too sure about it, then when they brought out the food I realized the portions are a lot more realistic than other restaurants. However the food is incredibly filling. I recommend the alligator it is delicious! Then don’t for get a dessert of beignets

0 stars! This place is horrible and RACIST! The Chef yells at the Waiters and Waitresses like they are animals! The food they serve is NOT FRESH! It seems like they reuse the food. This place has changed in the past year. Save your money because it is not worth it! The Owners are horrible… they do not accept complaints and have no sense of customer service!!!

Gumbo, sausage and the beignets were our of this world! Very nice waiter! Loved the atmosphere :) must go! Loved this as much as I loved going to New Orleans! Yumm!

Very authentic! My wife and I ordered a seafood platter for 2. Everything on the plate was delicious! Portion sizes were just a little on the small side, but for such excellent seafood at such a good price, I can’t complain.

Uhummmm… no. I appreciate the attempt to introduce creole food to the area, but please do not half-​ass it.
I can see past all of the intensely bayou-​rific décor, but the food was awful! It seemed like every item that we ordered was warmed up in the microwave, definitely not made to order.
My husband had the alligator? And we were hard pressed to figure out if it really was alligator or a polish sausage.

We ate here after driving around town trying to find a place to eat that was not a chain.
We were the only people in the establishment. It is very out dated and seems dingy. The waitress stated the swamp balls were the size of golf balls however they were not even close.
Hubby and I split seafood platter. Food was just so so and everything tasted the same.
This place needs a makeover and has the potential to really shine if they changed their menu and redecorated.

Disgusting. Had the gumbo with rice and a catfish poboy. The best part of the gumbo plate was the half sausage that comes with it. The poboy started off decent, and got progressively grosser with each bite. Good thing we had iced tea made with tap water to wash it down. :-/

Ate for the first time here and the food was delicious. Our waiter Alex was very attentive and friendly. The owner/​cook paid our table a visit and he gave us the history of the establishment. We all enjoyed our meals — blackened sword fish, soft shell crab, red beans and rice, étouffée, corn soup, shrimp cocktail. Was a bit apprehensive after reading negative comments, but glad they did not stand in the way. Plan on going back on Sunday with my group. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to try Cajun/​creole food with all the spices.

Food is pretty good though the red beans and rice was a bit less than desired. Service is ok. Ambience with all the kitschy stuff is little weird. Not a bad place but food could be a little better for what you pay.

Ordered shrimp poor boy and they have switched to little deep fried popcorn shrimp instead of the nice full sized grilled ones they had in previous years. Also, baked potato was not cooked all the way through. The corn crab chowder had a sour flavor. Very disappointed. Michael, our waiter was apologetic and the bright side of our visit. It might have been the time of day — 2 PM — it was kind of slow but Memorial Day Weekend

Food was mediocre at best. I had the crab cake poboy and the crabcake was small. It also had this Swiss cheese sauce which didn’t go well with the poboy. I’ve been to NOLA several times and this food didn’t scratch the surface of authentic creole food.

Me and my family came here today and we have mixed reviews. The seafood portion was very good but portions are also very small for the price. My kids all ordered hamburgers and I would have been better off taking them to Culver’s. Burgers were dry and looked like they came out of a prepackaged walmart store.

We were here 2 years ago and the food is still good. We had the alligator bites (yum), onion rings (nothin out of the ordinary), shrimp platter (good), crawfish étouffée (yum) and a pound of the boiled crawfish (excellent). Everything thing was seasoned well and I walked out the door a happy customer.
I know the reviews have be mediocre, but as a return customer I can say it’s one of our favorite dines in the Dells.

I’ve been to New Orleans, and have enjoyed trying other restaurants that say they make the same food.
The décor is a mix of floor to ceiling pictures, mini porch, and other paraphernalia that all make you feel like you stepped into a rec room with authentic New Orleans items.
My Shrimp Po’Boy was good, but not great, and not authentic. I’ve had fresher bread and more flavorful shrimp at other Wisconsin restaurants. For the non-​authentic part: Instead of using a cajun seasoning in the shrimp’s batter, there was a hot sauce spread applied to the bread. The bread itself was a bun instead of the standard French loaf.
The side of baby reds were perfectly made, but come with a bit of heat — the right amount of heat (spicy).
The tables inside are covered in plastic, and mine was a dirty-​sticky sensation. It was common to see the wait staff actually running from the front of the restaurant to the kitchen. Someone should train them better.

My friend and I tried to order take out from this restaurant last weekend when we were in the dells because we didn’t want to take the kids out after a long day in the water. When we walked in, we saw about 4 tables occupied, so there were probably 12 people in the restaurant.
We were greeted by the host so, we told the her we’d like to put in an order for take out. She told us that she would check with the kitchen because they don’t do take out orders after 6 on the weekends. Keep in mind, it was about 6:20 and there were 12 people in the damn restaurant.
Well, she came back to tell us they couldn’t help us. I then asked her why she would turn away over $ 100 in business. She just apologized.
To top things off, as we were driving away, we saw the «chef» hanging out on the side of the restaurant smoking a cigarette. Much too busy to cook.
Anyway, we went to alamo smokehouse and spent $ 120, and it was delicious. So if you’re thinking about eating at taste of new Orleans, don’t.

This review is from a biased Cajun food eater. I’ve been TO New Orleans and taught how to cook Cajun food from veterans. So here it goes.
Food:
3.5stars. Surprisingly tasty. We attended for Friday fish fry. The catfish was beer or buttermilk battered and made very well. It was juicy and not greasy. The gumbo’s roux was perfect, but the lack of trimmings made it as if I was just eating a soup. Authentic gumbo is chunky from all the meats, vegetables, and rice. But it had a very good taste.
The beignets were too flat and not fried dark or hard enough. But still tasty nonetheless.
The $ 5 red sangria was VERY good.

There was a language barrier between us and our waitress. She didn’t speak English well, she was uncultured, lightweight rude, and very ignorant to the restaurants menu. We gave the benefit of the doubt that she might be new to America AND the restaurant, but if the aim is to model the culture and hospitality of southernNew Orleans, she’s not a good representation.

Sit outside.
Old. Dusty. Outdated. Over decorated. Rustic. The carpet was visibly dirty. You could see the light and dark areas. There was just TOO much going on with the décor. I get they were trying to make it as vintage Cajun as possible, but it just looks tacky. The salt and pepper shaker were sticky and greasy. The first table we sat at had the must annoying infestation of gnats. We moved and still had to shoo away bugs. I liked the nice white fountain in the middle of the floor and the Bourbon street jazz that was playing. But I would highly recommend some serious updates to the décor. Tone it down. Dim the lighting. Try hardwood instead of carpet.
I would say the food was good enough to makeup for the other things, and if I go back I will ask to sit outside and try some other things on the menu.
