KSK Martial Arts Academy is a traditionally structured school offering instruction in traditional Jujitsu, and Self Defense. Whether you are the parent of a child who would benefit from an increase in confidence, self control, alertness, and determination, or an adult looking for a life enhancing activity with benefits of fitness, stress reduction, improved mental clarity, and self defense, KSK Martial Arts has a program to fit your needs. We do not charge for belts or rank tests. Students progress at their own pace and are promoted on merit. We also offer a transported after school program for children 6 to 14 years of age. Students are picked up from school and brought to our studio, homework is done, and students then participate in our award winning jujitsu program. You receive the benefit of uninterrupted family time with your child. Ask about our amazing Summer Camp!

History

Established in 2002.

In 2002 Sensei Poretz came to the conclusion that his next step as a martial artist would be to start a program of his own. So with 5 children from his synagogue he began KSK martial arts at the Jewish Community Center in Woodland Hills. The program became one of the most popular classes at the center and it quickly became apparent that they would outgrow the facility. A suitable location was soon found and the Kenshokan took up residence at 21 151 Victory Blvd in Woodland Hills. In December we will be celebrating our 8^th anniversary. The dojo has had some great success with several students becoming champions.

Gregory n’ Tammy P.

Business Owner

Gregory is a life long martial artist, starting in jujitsu in 1973 in Granada Hills Ca. He began teaching Jr students in 1985. He is a national jujitsu champion several times over and several of his youth and adult students have champions under his guidance. Sensei Poretz has studied; karate, hwa rang do, kung fu, and jojutsu. Tamara is a California credentialed teacher specializing in k-12. she operates the after school homework club and provides guidance on the curriculum and teaching strategies of the studio. Gregory and Tamara operate their business with the goal of creating strong confident children for a better world.

I wanted to wait a year before I wrote this review. I’ve done martial arts off and on for many years now, and I can honestly say this dojo is a great place to learn. Sensei Greg and the staff teach not only a traditional martial art but also its practical usage. Promotions are based on actual student knowledge and performance and every effort is made to make sure you are ready. If you want to fight then this may not be the place for you, but if you want to be a martial artist and truly know self defense and self awareness then this is the place. Now I have my son going here and enjoy watching him flourish.

I can’t write enough good things about Sensei Greg and his dojo. I have written before about our sons’ experience as students. It has been so rewarding just being a parent watching my boys flourish and grow under the tutelage of Sensei. Their confidence, bodily awareness and discipline is far above many of their peers.
But it’s not all work and no play at KSK. No sir. We came to the dojo as a result of attending a party for Sensei’s daughter. And we just had our first birthday party for one of our kids today. It.was.awesome. I don’t think I’ve been to a better kids party. I think all the kids had a great time. It was so easy for my wife and I. It was the perfect balance of fun and activities without a bunch of eight year olds getting out of control. There were games, swords, cake and jujitsu. Everyone had a blast.
Let me reiterate– my kids love Sensei Greg. And more importantly, they respect him. He earns every ounce of respect by being firm, fair and friendly. He really has a gift with kids. I would recommend this dojo to any family with no reservations at all.
And I would be remiss if I did not thank Richard and Lian for the help at the party in particular and the dojo in general. They make a great addition to the team.

I’d give KSK 100 stars if I could!
I have been bringing my son here for a couple of years now. KSK is more than a Martial Arts Academy, it’s a second family. Sensei Greg is PHENOMENAL! I don’t know where to begin.
He not only teaches the fine art of jiu jistsu, he teaches respect, consideration and patience. AND he teaches with such a fun and great attitude that the kids have a blast. His lessons are all encompassing, and at the end of the training sessions my son leaves with a great workout, a couple of new skills, goals and a valuable and appreciated lesson.
His exercises and warm-ups are not repetitive. He knows that variety is key in building up cardio and muscle strength. As a result, there is a large variety in his day to day lessons. My son is never bored. Ever.
Over time, my son has developed skills that not only are great self-defense mechanisms, but also help him with coordination and balance. He has learned how to get to a calm place in his head and how to focus. As a result, he has been able to overcome his ADHD and focus — not only in the dojo but also at home with his studies.
When I worked full time, I utilized KSK’s Homework club, which is a program for after school. They would pick my son up at school and take him to the dojo for tutoring. After homework, he would suit up and take a jiu jitsu class. It became like a second home to my son, where he felt safe and happy. He grew and developed tremendously during those years, and I have Sensei and his beautiful wife to thank for that. (As a side note: Sensei Greg is one of the smartest people I have ever met, and could probably successfully teach any topic that a student would have trouble with.)
There is no doubt that Sensei, his family and his staff pour their hearts into this dojo. You will notice that from day one, as your kid will feel welcome, encouraged, inspired and empowered.

My grandchild has been going to sensei Greg for a few years. And the other day when I visited her she told me that a bully in her school bothered her. As she told me the story I saw how she dealt with it in a positive way, by using her words and showing her confidence. When I said I was proud of her, she told me it was her sensei who taught her how. So I just want to thank sensei Greg for teaching more than martial arts.

I am very pleased with the reception I’ve had at KSK Martial Arts. I have no prior experience with martial arts, so I was a bit apprehensive. I was welcomed into the Dojo with open arms. Sensei Greg made sure that I had a safe introduction. There were other beginners and also more advanced students in the class that helped with the teaching. I had a very one on one experience which was very important to me. I am having a great time in the classes and I look forward to the years to come. I know that with the training I am getting that I will be in great shape and able to defend myself well.

I found this dojo while crusing around one day. I am actually a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu pracitioner that was seeking a place to work on my stand up. I then talked to Sensei Greg about joining and the prices were reasonable. I tried my first class and enjoyed it. No ego, just learning and a positive environment to be around. THis may be a small dojo, but knowledge is abundant inside the dojo. Highly recommend for someone who have done martial arts for over a decade.

You would not know from the size of this place, how deep the depth of knowledge that exists in it is. If you are to judge by your eyes, then you are going to be deeply mistaken. Though there are giant martial arts schools in the surrounding neighborhood, no one comes close to the depth and breadth of knowledge offered here.
The instructors are very knowledgeable and caring. I highly recommend this for anyone of your family, regardless of age and sex. Give them a try. You will be impressed.

I love this place! I had been searching for a traditional juijitsu school (not just grappling) and KSK is great. This is no McDojo. Sensei Poretz teaches all the classes himself and is a great instructor. The school is nice and clean. If you are thinking about training, come check it out, you won’t be sorry.

Landed in the Woodland Hills area a year ago with two kids, age 6 and 7. I was determined that they would have self-defense training, preferably Jujitsu, which I believe is the quickest method of learning self-defense. Fortunately, most the Dojos in the area offer a free class or two, so we started trying them out. LOTS of them.
Three quarters of the classes basically paired up my kids with another kid of roughly equal size, and said «wrestle.» A teacher would occasionally wander over and give a comment or two, but that was it. My kids enjoyed the wrestling, but what were they learning? Nadda, in my opinion.
A few of the others taught more formally, and my kids were so bored they didn’t want to go back.
Then…then…we found Kenshokan. Sensei Greg completely understands that kids (and adults) need all of the following, in roughly this order:
1) to be entertained
2) to be trained
3) to learn respect, and values, and restraint.
My kids LOVE the place, they have fun, but they really are learning Jujitsu. They know «moves.» Want proof? A bully attacked my son several months ago, and, as my nonplussed son puts it, «I put him down.» The bully hasn’t bothered him since. Thanks Greg!!!
A few weeks ago, my kids were wrestling on our bed, and my son fell off — back and head first. I thought we were headed to the emergency room — I was terrified. But in an instant, my son flipped around in mid-air like a cat and landed on all fours, unharmed, and again, nonplussed. Thanks again, Greg!!!
My seven year old daughter can throw a mean side kick, and can block a punch like Bruce Lee. Amazing to watch. Thanks yet again, Greg.
Recently, Greg added Samurai training to the schedule, and my kids are now taking that as well — learning sword fighting now, and God only knows what later. My kids love it all, get a great workout, are building confidence, and if someone ever comes at them with a sword, watch out!!!
If you want a place where youR kids will learn real skills, and discipline, and respect, all while having a complete blast… if you want that for yourself… well… the best place I’ve ever seen — and I’ve seen a lot of them — is right here in Woodland Hills.
They offer a complete schedule of classes for all ages, and a variety of fighting methods, including Jujitsu, boxing, Samurai training, and more. Two final words: THANKS, GREG!!!
