History

Established in 2014.

Ciao Chow Food Truck owners, Stefen Janke and Julie Van Dam (yes, we’re married) started a catering company, Gourmet Solutionz Catering, in Yolo County in 2008. Having gotten that business up and running, adding a food truck seem like a natural next step.

Stefen Janke started his culinary career at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Stefen worked his way up, starting as a stage at the Savoy Brassiere he soon set his sights on world class Aqua in San Francisco. After three years, Stefen went to work with the bold and talented Chef Alain Rondelli. At the tender age of 24 became a Sous Chef at Los Angeles’ four star restaurant, Patina. Finally ready to take on his own kitchen Stefen took over the helm at Inn at the Opera in San Francisco. Having worked as the chef at restaurants like Cypress Club in San Francisco and The Salish Lodge and Spa in Washington State, Stefen has honed his craft to perfection. In 2000 Stefen was looking for some extra time to spend with his infant son and became a private Chef in Los Angeles. Now Stefen brings his culinary talents to the greater Sacramento area with Gourmet Solutionz catering and recently added Ciao Chow Food Truck.

First timer to this truck and I am glad I treid it! Staffed by two friendly (and dare I say really cute) guys who helped me with menu selecitons. I ended up with the Thai Braised Pork plate and the pork eggrolls. The pork was awesome! Not too fatty (as pork can sometimes be) and seasoned with a sauce that I wish was a little spicier, but still very good. The salad was delicious, with a sesame-​type dressing. Not sure what kind of «white» sauce went on the rice, but the portion was non-​overwhelming (which would be fabulous except for the fact that I am knocked up).
I knew I was going to be super hungry so I got the eggrolls as well. HOLY. MOLEY. Those friggin rolls were delicious. I wavered between eating them all and just rubbing them on my face to absorb the scent. Not really, but you get the picture. Try it out! Next time I am getting the pork sammy!

I have tried this place twice and it has exceeded my expectations both times. I have tried the pork sandwich and it was delicious.
I have also tried the thai pork with rice which was also outstanding. There is a lot of flavor in their food. This is one of the best food trucks I have tried.

I had the thai braised pork rice plate. It was delicious! The pork was cooked to perfection, the sauce was delicious though I prefer more spiciness. The rice had a delicious white sauce on it that was great but I don’t know what it was. The salad was good also. Will definitely buy from this truck again!

Well. This food truck was at the Davis food truck rodeo. We got pulled pork sandwiches. Which did not look like that photo someone posted. It wasn’t on a nice sandwich roll or nicely presented. It was on a small hamburger bun. For $ 8?! And the taste. Well it was unlike anything I’ve ever had. Took one bite and we threw it out, after we waited in line for one hour. I understand it was busy. But I’m sure this wasn’t their first «rodeo». Better prepare, lower your prices, and put better items on the menu that are consistent.

I tried the chow mein and it was like none I have ever tried with the hoisin sauce on it, there was too much of it. And I didn’t expect it to be on chow mein. If I ever go back to this food truck I will never get the chow mein.

Excited to see Ciao Chow at my office today! First off, great customer service which is key for me. Now on to the main attraction… the food. I enjoyed the chicken chow mein and a Mac-​n-​Cheese egg roll… and my co-​workers kept coming by my office asking, «What is that wonderful smell?» Taking the braised pork rice plate and salad x 2 home to my family for dinner… and half of my lunch since the portion sizes are plentiful. A yummy treat, thank you. Looking forward to the next time.

It is an Asian fusion food truck run by Non-​Asians. They had a pretty long line, which means food must be generally liked.
I tried the Chicken Chow Mein — asked for spicy. It comes with red peppers, mushrooms and fried green beans and Hoisin sauce. I was not familiar with Hoisin sauce — it has a sweet smoky flavor which I decided is not for me. Chicken was fatty, so I didn’t have it. Otherwise the chow mein was edible. But that says a lot since I have had horrendous experiences with Chinese type food before!
Prices are on the higher side for a food truck.

Tried out Ciao Chow at a Sac Food Mob event in our friendly neighborhood business park. Because I was also ordering from another food truck, I opted for the Thai Braised Pork slider. I have to say it was fantastic, and I regretted not buying two.
The combination of the juicy, tasty pork with a lovely arugula salad complete with julienned carrots and cucumber (I think) on an excellent slider bun was perfect. They throw in a few potato chips as a side, and they might be homemade.

Ciao Chow has been to my office a few times, and I’ve always wanted to try it, but for whatever reason, I never have.
Until now.
First impression? Good customer service… answered my questions, offered to subsitute when I asked to remove something, sent me off with a sincere goodbye…
I’m kinda bummed that I didn’t try the cream cheesey kimchee sauce they put on their rice; that sounds disgustingly delicious!
I did try the plum sauce ginger braised tofu and side salad. Like someone mentioned in another review, during the first few bites, I was a little underwhelmed. But as I kept eating, I actually really enjoyed it.
I loved that salad was light and colorful. The basil and mint were a plesant surprise.
Tofu was good; it wasn’t heavy on the plum sauce, as I expected it to be. I kinda felt as if it could have been pressed (better, if already pressed?), though. I love love loved the bed of shiitake mushrooms the tofu rested on.
All in all, not too shabby. I shall look forward to their return, so I can try their ciao chow mein. :)

I ordered the Thai Braised Pork. It was $ 8.50. It came with sticky rice covered with a creamy light orange colored sauce and a side salad with arugula, carrots and cucumbers. The pork was pretty moist and tender. It had a nice flavor. A little sweet and a little savory. The Thai Basil, mint and cilantro garnished on top added that extra bit of flavor to it and made it that much better. I enjoyed the pork more as I ate it. After the first bite, I thought «eh it’s just ok» but as I kept eating it, I really started to enjoy it. I wasn’t that crazy about the salad though. The sauce on the rice was good. It was kind of like that creamy orange sauce on a lot of sushi rolls nowadays. I would’ve preferred more rice and less salad. The meat/​rice ratio was a little off for me. I wish Unilocal had ½ stars. I would probably give it 3.5 stars, but I’ll give my review 4 stars since the service was pretty quick (although it wasn’t super busy when I was there) and 3 stars might be too low. Plus, I did kind of wished I had a few more bites of pork and rice after I finished my meal. I’d try this place again if it was in the area again.

I ordered the Ciao Chow plate with Moroccan chicken for $ 8.50. The food looked delicious & was colorful. The salad was green (arugula maybe?), with lots of shredded carrots and cabbage. The Moroccan chicken was, interesting. It was a chicken breast with sweet stewed tomatoes, green onion, raisins, and some other fruit I couldn’t identify. I also tasted cilantro at one point, and maybe ginger (there were a lot of flavors). Some bites tasted Thai, others Vietnamese, some tasted Moroccan. In all, the food was okay; a little spice would have made the Moroccan chicken much better; it has all the flavor components of a great spicy dish.

Not a good first visit for me. Tried the tofu plate, had extremely high hopes because it sounds delicious on the menu. I ordered & waited for 30 minutes (which I can get over because I know with food trucks a bit of a wait should be expected). Once it hit 30 minutes I noticed that 4 people who ordered after me received their food so I asked the woman at the window if she had called my name already & was just given a very rude «No». No explanation, no apology or anything, just «no» & she walked to the other side of the truck. After watching another get their food I asked the guy at the window if my food would be coming out soon & he let me know I’d be next… I could deal, as long as they didn’t forget my order I’d get over it, but sitting down at my desk & biting into a cold piece of tofu… That I cannot deal with… To wait over 30 minutes & be given cold food. Inexcusable… I had high hopes, but more than likely won’t be back again. I could spend less for food in the Calpers cafeteria & know it will be hot.

Had some chicken chow mein with hoisen sauce and mushrooms. The flavor was not bad but the dish itself was a hot mess. There was way too much sauce that everything just kind of became a gooey glob.

Not sure how I am the only the 2nd person to review Ciao Chow but I’m feeling a bit of celebrity as I take breaks as I write this to eat my braised tofu with plum sauce.
This rice bowl is exceptional. I love the combination of the tofu with a crisp side salad lightly dressed. The tofu hasn’t just been marinating in the sauce, the tofu has joined in heavenly matrimony with the sauce, and they’ve begun a life of happiness resting on a warm bed of rice. And there is a group of mushrooms in attendance. Shitake? They are flavorful, and sliced just the way I like them.
Not only was my lunch fantastic, but the couple running the joint were very friendly which made the experience even better.

I drove in to costco for the pizza lunch but I always look over to my left to REI to see if any of the local food trucks are parked there. Lo and behold Via Chow was there which I had never seen before. Southeast Italian cuisine is what they offer so I was intrigued. I ordered the mu shu melt and it was REALLY good. To say it was mu shu on a bun is doing it a disservice. Thai braised chunks of pork, julienned daikon and carrots, sliced cucumbers, Thai basil, fried egg and a white sauce on buttery, toasted, sliced sourdough bread. Crunch went the first bite and it was more of the same when I finished and didn’t get soggy. Lots of different flavors and they were all fantastic.
They also do rice bowls, pasta, and other sandwiches. They are new, so bear with them in more offerings and their website. But they are off to a great start and I will follow them on Twitter to see where their culinary journey takes them.
