Phyzique

Phyzique is great! This is my favorite gym in New York City. If you buy a year-​long membership, it’s super affordable (around 30 – 35 a month), and it’s not like NYSC, where they use high pressure sales tactics or try to bully you into not cancelling. The staff at Phyzique is super friendly and the gym is really clean. People don’t leave weights out, and I can always find a locker to use (they’re all daily use). There are pretty much always treadmills or stationary bicycles available, if you’re into cardio.
It can get pretty crowded after work (circa 6−8pm), but that’s true anywhere. I do wish there were more than just two regular squat racks, as that’s what I use for most of my workout (e.g., squats, press, deadlifts). Sometimes, if I go when it’s busy, both squat racks will be in use by dudes who use the station for like 45 minutes straight, and I’ll have to improvise. But lately I’ve been going early (around 7:15 a.m.) when it’s less crowded, and I haven’t had a problem getting all my sets in. The gym could probably stand to get rid of one or two of the older machines/​stations that no one ever seems to use, and put a third squat rack in its place. But that’s my only real gripe – this gym is really awesome!

Phyzique can get crowded during peak after work hours but otherwise it is a very good facility. There is a good amount of variety in the equipment and you can usually find whatever you need to get your workout done. It isn’t also really a generic «casual» gym which is good. Everyone is really into improving themselves and not just for the sake of those new year’s resolutions. Just a tip, it really isn’t worth the money to pay for a membership monthly. The 6 months is a pretty good deal but the year deal is the best.

Really great gym, friendly staff, lots of machines, never super crowded. I working out here. I also signed up for a personal trainer for a few weeks, and it was totally worth it!

So I haven’t been to this gym in a while, but I was a member for 6 months a few years back. Regardless, I don’t think I would change my mind mainly because it’s not ACed well so in middle of the summer it smells (really bad) and when your trying to run on the treadmill and it’s already humid and smelly — you might as well run outside. I will say they didn’t over charge me and it is cheap (so if you’re looking for the bare basics and you don’t mind bad ventilation then you’ll be fine)

Coming here means you’re supporting a neighborhood business with such friendly and nice staff. Gyms are notorious for up selling and shady billing practices. Phyzique rates are incredibly affordable and refreshingly transparent.
Sometimes it does take the AC some time to start up first thing in the morning which in humid days can be a bummer. But I can get over that for the price and awesome neighborhood vibe.

I’ve been a member for Physique for three years and have been incredibly happy with my experience. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The machines are well-​maintained. The gym member traffic is pretty steady so there are rarely times when my desired machine is unavailable for more than 10 minutes.
In particular, I want to call out my personal trainer James who is amazing. He’s a great motivator. I resisted strength training for so long– out of laziness and gym-​timidation– and he got me into free weights, resistance bands, kettle bell and medicine ball exercises. He has helped me tighten up my entire figure (and quite effortlessly so I must say) in preparation for my November wedding and I fully anticipate keeping up with his personal training well after then!

After my previous review, I had two rather serious injuries — a dislocated knee and a herniated disc. I couldn’t move properly and watching me walk was like watching someone sixty years my senior — painful. Add to that having gained about 50 pounds from injury depression eating and inability to do physical activity. I took advantage of a PT deal with Phyzique, remembering the positive experience from my one day pass the year prior. After talking about my injuries and challenges, I was paired with James.
As mentioned before, I worked in gym management for six years — James is, hands down, the best trainer I have ever seen. His knowledge of the inner workings of the musculoskeletal systems is phenomenal, and he was able to locate and target my injuries and fix them better than several months of physical therapy did. I’ve been working with him regularly for six months now. I’ve lost those 50 pounds, I’m a lot stronger, and I’m moving better than I did before the injuries.
With his guidance, the cramped gym I experienced in the previous review now feels much more comfortable, even though nothing had changed.
The staff has been great, too. They greet me by name when I walk in before I’ve checked in, and they’re always right on top of what needs to be done.
TL;DR: Worth every penny. If you’re looking for training, James is the best there is, and you should give him your money.

I’d give this 3.5 stars if I could, but one of my only gripes is relatively specific.
My main concerns are squat racks/​cages, benches, bars, and plates. Other items I will comment on briefly.
Good bars — all rogue ohio bars, from what I can rekcon — and good weights.
No cage, but 2 squat racks located in the rear.
Good iron plates, and bumpers present as well. No dropping of weights though! This was an issue for me for any olympic movements, and confuses me since they have a broad selection of bumpers.
The benches are very comfortable to bench on — not to narrow or wide, just right — and are in good condition, without visible cracks in the leather.
I’m mainly squatting, pressing in some way, and pulling, so the above are my biggest points of interest. Other things of note:
A wide selection of dumbells, machines and kettlebells. The standard fare you’d find at other facilities. There is also a stretching area with some foam rollers.
Bathrooms (men’s, at least) are alright. Relatively small, but the facility itself isn’t the biggest. They could be a bit cleaner, but they are very much passable. Lockers are sized well.
Overall a good facility. If I could drop the bumpers, I would rate this a 4 – 4.5 for having everything I need for my training, but a few minus points for cleanliness of the bathroom and size.

This gym is the best gym i have ever used. Very clean, no hidden fees, no sales hustling. The private coach is expensive but so is everywhere else. I absolutely loved the machines and in the arc of one month I had toned arms like i never had before. Very pleasant ambient, respectful patrons. You get a whole variety of costumers: seniors, college kids, normal working people, nerds. Judgement free zone.
The price is super convenient: about $ 400 for a year subscription, excluding private coaching. No fuss no frills gym. You walk in, work out, get in the zone. Love it.

For 2015, I found out that Phyzique increased their annual membership 4.30% to $ 364 from $ 349. Of course paying for more of anything sucks but they do keep the equipment in great condition and they should if they’re asking for more.

I love this gym. It’s close to my apt, no frills. And the other people are working out hard so it’s motivating. Staff are awesome and friendly.
Can always get on machines or weights (I work out in the morning and sometimes in the evenings).
And, the place is always spotlessly clean.

Great place over all… Knowledgeable trainers not like in other places where you have someone screaming at you to do 3 more… They are very well know for personal training. Ask for Josh he’s the fitness manger there.

Overall, this is a decent neighborhood gym. Not a lot of frills or fuss. Staff is always friendly and the place is kept very clean. It’s not very large and can get crowded during «rush hour», but I tend to work out later at night so it doesn’t bother me.
My one complaint, and the one reason I took off a star, is that the locker rooms are extremely tiny. With only 3 – 4 other people changing at the same time, it can feel down right claustrophobic. I’m not sure much can be done about that without some sort of full remodel, so just beware it’s a pain to deal with. It’s definitely not enough of an issue to keep me away.

W ow what a terrible experience. I go there to train with my two workout partners. We train hard but quite, clean and restful. When I was leaving I was told not to come back by a trainer because «you can not give people sets, reps or encourage those you train with» and no I wasn’t screaming. My responce was «well if my partners not pushing hard enough I’m just sapose to stand there and not push hem»? His responce was «yes». I asked what am I allowed to do? He said «not what you were doing». I can only assume he thought I was a trainer. But we all payed to get in. My responce was «put up a sign that says just what you told me. Put it outside the gym so people can know your a Planet Fitness.

Today, I went to check the gym to sign up, I wanted to see the place (to see the weight equipment) and unfortunately the person in charge (the Chinese young person) told me I COULD NOT SEE THE PLACE … at 900 pm. I wonder .? what time it will be possible to see at 5 30 am?
delusion that this gym … if so is the staff … I’d rather stay in my old gym

This place has a great staff from Liz ms Angel, the trainers, and people from this neighborhood, Nicks a beast he’s a nice guy and owner of the gym. I love the juice bar and the total amount of free weights. They also have machines of all sorts to use. I love this little gym and you’d be amazed at how many weights people can work out at one time with the limited amount of space it has. I was benching 180 wh len i started going here now im pushing 290 for two reps. I paid 289 for a year plus a couple day training session with a personal trainer to get the basics down like rep count and form. Lastly they got a bunch of tv ’ s and constantly inform an ensure you wipe of the equipment with provided wipes and they got some good magazine’s to read if your into reading and running or stationary biking.

I just started my membership, so let’s see how it goes. I feel like there’s mix reviews about this gym, but I think it fits well with those who have certain goals. While they don’t offer classes; they offer a large area of weights.
I didn’t want to over do it on my first day at the gym, (since it’s been a long time) so I decided cardio was the best way to go. I used the treadmills in the far back and forgot there was a step and fell on my buns (quite hard I must admit) so remember and beware of this step.
The yearly membership is the best bang for your buck. It’s $ 349 for the year in which you can pay in two installments or the full amount up front. There’s a 6 months membership for $ 249. If you don’t plan to be in the area more than 6mths then this might fit your needs best. Last but not least they also offer a month to month rate which is $ 60. If you calculate, that comes out to be almost double of the asking yearly membership and if your going to pay $ 60 a month… You might as well go to NYSC on 39^th street (which is over rated if you ask me).
All in all… Check it out. I’d say it’s pretty worth it.

I’m a current member who mysteriously contracted meningitis last month (Mid October, 2013).
I’ve been hospitalized for 10 days, so I’ve asked my doctor if she can say that this was where I contracted meningitis for sure.
Meanwhile, I called them and explained the situation and asked them to transfer the membership to my brother.
The owner said there will be $ 75 fee and I have to be there with my brother.
I told him that I don’t ever wanna be there ever again, but he was very combative and unprofessional on the phone. I’m sure he had to look and sound tough around the personal trainers there or something.
Pro: Cheap.
Con: Old machines, bad policy and sarcastic owner who said «I know. I’m being sarcastic!» over the phone.

I have been a member for only about a week but I love it so far.
Just as a quick background, my last gym was big (2 floors, tons of machines, classes, etc.) but dirty, smelly, crowded, unfriendly, unprofessional. I also constantly got hit on and harassed by creepy dudes (that included the staff).
I am extremely relieved to find this place and very close to my apartment too.
It is CLEAN — they make it a point to remind you to wipe down the machines and keep the wipes consistently stocked.
It’s super FRIENDLY. The counter staff is extremely nice, smiles at you, tells you ‘have a great workout’ and ‘good night.’ Little things… that make a big difference.
It’s a small gym but I haven’t been unable to find a particular machine or piece of equipment yet. It seems they covered everything. Some of the machines are a bit old/​rusty but work fine. There is a small stretching area with ab rollers, bars, stability balls, really light dumbbells, mats, etc. Wish it was slightly bigger, but I haven’t had a problem carving out a spot. Somehow, although it’s not a big gym at all, it hasn’t been crowded — and I go at peak time (after work).
There is a locker room with 2 bathroom stalls and 2 shower stalls. Also a smoothie bar at the counter which I haven’t sampled yet.
It’s extremely affordable — 350 for a year is a great deal.
If you are interested, go in, they’ll give you a tour. Very happy with this gym.
