Mountain High Snowboarding Lessons

I know it’s Southern California in all but this has to be one of the worst resorts I’ve been to. The chair lifts take literally 10 minutes for a 30second ride back down the mountain; and they close all of the «black diamonds» which are really like easy blues, even when there is snow. I’ve been here several times and I feel like I get a cold shoulder from the staff, extremely rude. And the management of the mountain could be better. They are very unorganized. And in reality kinda remind me of a chicken with its head cut off, they just don’t know what they’re doing, the vibe isn’t that great. If you want to snowboard or ski for the first time this is an okay place. However I honestly wouldn’t recommend this mountain to anyone. I hate to say it but after my season pass goes up this season I probably won’t be back.

My husband and I went to Mountain High today to use our January Learn to Ski Special. The weather was pretty awful and overall the place and management seemed unorganized. The chairlifts were not operating and the magic carpet kept freezing. I also did not like how parking was separated between the cars and trucks. Since we had a truck, we ended up parking in the bottom lot and had to hike up to reach the resort — so that aspect I say Big Bear was much better. However, my instructor MARK was wonderful! There was another instructor who was trying to get me into a lesson since I had skied before was very helpful and arranged for me to have a private one-​on-​one lesson instead. I was at ease with Mark and he gave me great feedback during our lesson. He also lent me his jacket since it was snowing/​raining pretty badly — so with this it would be FIVE STARS all the way. I hope to work with Mark again when we go back in a couple of weeks.

I have 10 year twins (one boy, one girl) who decided that this year they wanted to try snowboarding. I have zero experience with snowboarding. Therefore, I asked around and was encouraged by several friends to check out Mountain High. I am pleased to say that this was good advice. We live in Claremont and went on 12÷28÷15. The drive from our house was 48 miles long and took less than an hour both ways.
I called the day before our planned excursion and was advised to arrive by 8:00 a.m. in order to ensure a place for my kids in the full day lesson (10:00 to 3:00). That was very good advice. We arrived at 8:00 and by 8:45 had lift tickets and rental equipment ready to go. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful. While waiting for the class to begin, my kids had some hot chocolate in the lodge and played in the snow. Meanwhile, I watched the ticket and rental lines growing longer and longer.
The class started promptly at 10:00. My kid’s instructors were Lexee and Hunter. I cannot tell you how fortunate I fell to have them supervising my children. They were fun, attentive and seemed to be totally focused on safety and the kids having a good time. By the end of the day, the kids in the class were riding the lower lift by themselves and most of them were able to complete the bunny run with few or no falls. One last bit of luck: it also snowed a couple of inches near the end of the lesson.
Great day, great fun, great staff, great resort.

Forgot to post this a week ago. Had a group lesson with Eric and there ended up being only 2 of us. First thought: score! I’ll definitely be able to learn today! Um, yeah no. Told the instructor about my knee surgeries and that I was wearing a knee brace. Wasn’t doing so well making it down the bunny slope. He bailed on us 30 min before the end of the lesson, leaving me halfway down the bunny slope with a sticky board and not being able to stay up. Lesson was supposed to end at 145, but I was down the bunny slope (after considerable time spent on my hands and knees bc I couldn’t stay up), had returned all my gear, gotten my stuff at the locker and was at Customer Service by 147. The guest services ladies offered me a free lesson later that day, but by that point– I was done. I was angry and upset and just wanted to leave, so they nicely comped me my beginner lesson package and gave me a voucher to return. I’m planning on going back, but was super bummed bc that lesson was supposed to be my starter lesson since I’m spending part of the holiday break in Tahoe. Shame on Eric for bailing on someone who needed more guidance.

Bought 3 of the $ 139 passes at Big 5. Best value ever and now the family can enjoy a new sport. This is normally out of reach for families without breaking the budget but not any more. Our first training was with Court and he was an EXCELLENT instructor. Really was like private instruction. Keep in mind that this deal has blackout periods and is good for 13 year olds and up. See you later this month Mountain High and keep up the great work!

My daughter loved her day of learning snowboarding. I was a little disappointed, however, that her lesson started ½ hour late — so I was told it would last ½ hour longer, but when I returned with my camera ready to get some shots, it had already ended as scheduled. There isn’t really anywhere to watch them in their lesson either, so I went home without a great photo of Olivia’s first time snowboarding, but very happy she loved it so much.
Another thing they should do is ask the kids in the class if they eat meat before they get them lunch at the lodge. I kinda liked their chicken nuggets, though. Oh and go upstairs for a hot drink from the bar — the hot apple pie with whipped cream… — whatever it was called, it was fabulous!
The parking was easy, the drive is easy-​peasy, the people were very nice… all-​in-​all I would do it again. I’m ready for more snow!

Bought the 1,2,3 lesson package they have available online and what a great deal. The staff and management make sure you have a great experience. Mark and Clay are two of the nicest guys. They made sure my son learned as much as possible. If your looking to get lessons for yourself or your kids make sure to check them out. Btw if your looking for a good place to eat while your there stop by the BullWheel and hopefully you get Christine to wait on you because she’s awesome.

Me and my girlfriend had a horrible experience today. We purchased snowboarding lessons that included a lower level lift ticket and rentals. I asked if I could just purchase lessons only since I had my own brand new gear and they said no. So I had to pay $ 85 for the bundle, ugh whatever. Lame! So, we get to the area where the lessons are being held and were told to hang tight for them to start. About 3 instructors started the class and we were off to a good start. They went over the basics at first, such as how to put your boots on, how the bindings work, and safety rules. After that, they had everyone strap one foot in and then walk up and down the mountain dragging the board. After that we were taught how to get around on the board still with one foot strapped in. I guess this is important for when you get off the lift. I didn’t have a problem with this but it was about an hour of getting around with one foot strapped in and I felt like there was a lack of help and guidance. 3 instructors dwindled to 1 or 2 guys. They were not much help, didn’t really teach effectively and didn’t seem to care. They would just describe what to do in a few sentences and ask you to do it. Although all of the instructors were nice, I felt like they just didn’t do enough. If you want lessons, I suggest trying a private lesson so that you get more attention and help especially if it’s your first time. The group lesson I took they just kind of give you a few instructions and let you go. By the time I was done half the class had already left. Goes to show how engaging the class is.

Love this place! Went snowboarding here 3 times last yr Price was reasonable, staff was very friendly, instructors were super nice and helpful, the slopes were always being kept in the best condition possible. My first time snowboarding was at big bear, the drive was terrible, the mountain road and chains totally ruined my tires. Then my friends told me that I should try mountain high, so I went and took couple group lessons, then went back again with a couple friends. The drive was very smooth, they have wider roads which made my trips a lot easier. And they have night sessions too, which is totally awesome for ppl who have to work 6 days a week and only have time after 5pm, like myself lol. I am totally in love with this place and def planning on going back again this winter: D

Challenging but fun. I definitely want to do this again so I may get better so I may really enjoy the sport.

I just started learning snowboard. I purchased 3 peat for $ 139 (
). It’s a pretty good deal for beginning.
I notice there is a level for each lesson. If you play the first time, they will show you the fundamental stuff. After that, you need to PRACTICE and PRACTICE!
Don’t be afraid to fall b/​c you will fall for sure 110%.
If you come to second time, you can choose level 2 lesson (for people know how to stop) or go back to level 1 lesson. The lesson 2 is pretty much about Falling Leaf
, and Making and Linking Turns.
So far, I just finished my second lesson. 1 more to go.
Right now, I think I’m doing pretty good. I know how to turn toeside and heelside. I know how to stop, and control 90% of my speed. just need more practice!

Best place local, to learn how to snowboard! me and my boys had a great season here.

Good school for adults. I took terrain park lessons — only 30 bucks for season pass holders — and my girlfriend got the killer 3peat for success lessons ($ 140 for 4 visits, 3 lessons, and 3 rentals). On the downside, my 12yr old daughter learned way more with lessons at Big Bear than she did here.

Skiing lessons at Mountain High are great. I purchased the Three Peat pass at Big 5 for $ 139. It included lessons, rentals, and lift ticket for three days! Great price for everything needed for a beginner. I had never skied before and my instructor Arthur was so helpful. Arthur broke everything down step by step and by the end of class I felt completely comfortable.

Pros — good place to get in practice cycles. Close to the metro area, variety of difficulty level trails, 2 sites helps mitigate the risk nothing is rideable and decent prices for the value… Oh and mh season passes work at Sierra this year if you want to plan some longer Tahoe getaways.
Cons– gets super crowded and is worse every year. Forget making the trip if you slept in, it snowed recently, or it is a holiday; you won’t get past The Stop Sign in Wrightwood. The terrain park in West is right next to the beginner hills, so you a lot of high speed hooligans amongst the falling leaves. Keep your gear close, lots of theft in the parking lot and lodge common areas.
Tips for snowboarding noobs–
Swing by a Sports Chalet and grab yourself waterproof pants, a helmet, hip pads, and knee pads. Your first couple days are going to be rough as you get your balance. Some people suggest wrist guards– I found them to be too big of a hassle under mittens with all of the strapping in and out business.
Other Unilocalers have covered the class passes in West. West has a super gentle bunny hill, but I stop learning if I’m constantly weaving around wipeouts. Plus I was super lucky to have a patient decade of boarding BF that insisted on equipping and teaching me. The first couple trips, I bought a point ticket and rode up the lift at East. At the top, there’s a less crowded Green whose lift doesn’t consume points (yet). The Blue path that takes you back to the lot may be too much for you; it’s the longest blue run in SoCal. You can unstrap your board and «download» the lift as well (pretend to be aerial filming your epic BF’s black diamond run if you need to avoid eye contact with the serious riders coming up). :-P

ohhh I know lets put him/​her in ski/​boarding school to learn how to join us! Ohhh yeah!
well that is what some people do. I however went into this thinking that I wanted to get my daughter into skiing and boarding so that she can join me. I started her lessons at age four and just had them continued at age 5 this season over the weekend.
She has really enjoyed taking lessons with the instructors here at Mt High’s Winter Sports School. I started her on ski’s for two reasons; 1 kids are able to pick up skiing much more easily than snowboarding, 2 If you start on a snowboard, its really hard to learn to ski, whereas the inverse holds true.
Well my daughter has really really enjoyed all of her lessons so far here. I have also stopped and watched how they work with the young kids. They seem to do a pretty good job with the kids. After the lessons, my daughter has the ability to do a number of important things. Including stopping, turning left and right, snowplow (pizza) and parallel a lil bit (french fries).
So I would recommend these guys to other people. I did not like that they allowed the kids to take off gloves, hats, goggles/​sunglasses, etc. It also seemed that some of the staff treats it like a random daycare job, in lieu of teaching kids a sport that they are passionate about.
Overall though, I am quite pleased with this Winter Sports School.

I decided to take snowboarding lessons once a group of my friends and I made arrangements to go to mammoth. I wanted to be prepared for the slopes! I went to Mountain High to learn some basics. I bought the beginners package which was $ 75 & it included boots, board, bindings & a lower lift ticket for 8 hrs. My instructor John was amazing! There were 5 of us in his class, and he spent time with all of us individually to figure out what our weaknesses/​strengths were. By the end of the lesson I was carving down the bunny slope! Not bad for my first lesson ever! =] overall I would recommend taking lessons, go early & during the week when it’s not as crowded.

$ 129 for 3 lessons and rentals with the 3-​peat pass from Big 5
If you want to learn how to snowboard (or ski), this is the way to go…
Don’t be a f*cking douchebag and ask your friends to teach you cuz you’re just gonna be wasting their time… they would rather be cruisin down the mountain then having to pick your ass up from the snow… and then your dumb ass complains about how you can’t ride while your friends are trying to explain you’re leaning too far forward, or leaning too far back, too much heel edge. too much toe edge. and all your dumb ass can say is «i can’t do it…» well then, sit the f*ck down and STFU… LET ME RIDE!
Yah, i REFUSE to teach any one how to snowboard… well, at least the basics… I always recommend taking lessons… and at Mt. High, they have a sweet deal called the 3-​Peat which you can purchase at any Big 5 store or online…
Basically, with the 3-​Peat, you get an 1hr 45min lesson and it includes equipment: boots, bindings, and board… And an 8-​hour pass after you’re done with lessons… All you need to bring is yourself and some clothes suitable for fallin/​sittin on the snow (aka waterproof/​water resistant pants).
This deal also works for those who want to learn how to ski… And, you get to use this 3-​peat pass three times… unfortunately, there are restrictions on the days you can use this pass so make sure you check Mt. High’s website… So, for the price of about two 8-​hr ski lift passes, you get 3 days of lessons and 3 days of 8-​hr lift passes, and 3 days of equipment rental… that’s a pretty f*ckin sweet deal if you ask me!
When I took lessons a few years back, my instructor was Karla… she was great… very friendly and patient… and helped us out a lot… I was a bit heavier set back then and it was difficult to actually stand up on my board… she was awesome and helped me figure out how someone of my size and unflexibleness (is that a word?) would get up on a snowboard… Anyways, I’m glad I took lessons… by the end of my first snowboarding season, i was confident enough to do black diamond trails…
So, the moral of this story is:
DON’T BE A DOUCHEBAG!!!
Let your friends enjoy the mountain while someone who gets paid to be patient teaches you the basics, the lingo, and the etiquette…
Once you get a hang of that, I would be more then happy to help you build on the skills you just learned…

I tried snowboarding once and I sucked! I need to get lessons… and so I did.
I got this cool deal at Big 5. The «3 Peat» I get 3 visits to Mountain High, with a lesson each time and rentals included for $ 130. Great deal.
We stood in a long line to get our tickets. Then we rented the equipment. Went up the bunny slope and waited for our instructor. Greg was an awesome guy. He really helped us out a lot. He showed us the basics and what not to do. Got a 1 ½ hour lesson and then we were free. I will admit I fell a lot, but I kinda got the hang out it towards the end. By that time I was so sore I had to go. It takes a lot of practice to get decent at this sport, but I have time to invest and will get better. Second time I go, I hope to do well.
Overall, the lesson was worth it. I just need to look up and not at the ground.

Very friendly staff. Instructor broke it down very easily. From falling properly to edging on your board. 9 students for 1 ½ hours with one instructor. Some that kinda needed extra help he was able to accommodate. Beginner slope that we worked on had enough room to practice and didn’t have a problem with other people bumping into us.
I have never snowboarded in my life and I was able to pick it up very quickly. A lot of people warned me that I was gonna fall and hate my first time but I had only 2 big falls, 1. slipped on some slick ice trying to look for my girl, 2. my girl wanted to hold hands while going down a small hill. I had a freaking great time. Wish I had more time.
