History
Established in 1976.
The Bell Tower originally operated in an historic Victorian mansion on North Fifth Street in downtown Reading. Carolyn Helms, Bell Tower’s current owner and president, acquired the business in 1988. The Bell Tower was just what Carolyn needed after growing out of her business’s location on Penn Street that she founded at the age of twenty-two. Helms had a vision of Bell Tower’s small salon evolving into something much more advanced. During her second year in the fifth street facility, Helms renovated the second floor to create a 2000 sq. ft. private day spa which offered facials, nail and foot care and massages. However, 21 employees and 11 years later, the Bell Tower needed even more room to grow.
Today, the 8,000 sq. ft. Bell Tower employs about 55 people and stands out as a leader in the beauty and wellness industry. The Bell Tower Salon Spa that exists today was originally built as a family’s horse stables and was used many years later for storing Wyomissing borough maint

Organizations, both local and international, have acknowledged the level of excellence achieved by Carolyn Helms. Under her guidance, Bell Tower has been named Berks People’s Choice for eight years, the «Best of Berks», Modern Salon’s «Salon of the Year» and winner of Salon Today’s Top 200 Salons for six years. A graduate of the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy, where Helms became licensed as teacher as well as stylist, Helms’ salon education spans Bumble and bumble training, Brazilian Blowout Certification, Oribe Advanced Training in Miami, Oribe Backstage Las Vegas 2010 & 2011 and Oribe Atlier 2011. With nearly 25 years experience in advanced cutting and coloring for women, Helms creates modern looks that her guests can easily recreate, between maintaining connections to the community and styling for various photo shoots. After joining Intercoiffure in 2010, Helms joined Oribe’s editorial styling team to execute the Giorgio Armani & Emporio Armani runway shows at Paris Fashion Week 2011.
