Maewyn’s Irish Pub & Restaurant

Nice place and great look BUT rumor has it that an insurance outfit bought the building. Doubt this place will be open much longer since they already are only open weekends. Food always seemed good along with the beer, but when you’re only open 2 – 3 days, things can’t be that fresh. Hopefully it stays an Irish pub because it is a beautiful building inside, but I doubt it.

This has become our «go to» place. I just wish they were open more days out of the week. The food is good and affordable, especially the sandwiches and steak fries. I also love how they do a drink special each night at a discounted price.

Meh. just… well… meh? I’ve most definitely experienced better food. The service was pretty decent and the food was mediocre. I did however enjoy the atmosphere. I appreciate the Irish pub décor. Probably not my favorite or first choice of places to eat but if Maewyn’s was the only place left to eat on earth — I’d probably stop in from time to time.

My husband and I usually make a trip to Maewyn’s for dinner once every other month and have never been disappointed. Their Shepards Pie is probably some of the best I’ve tried in the area, and the Honey Herb Chicken is by far my favorite dish. If you opt for dessert, you must try the Sticky Toffee pudding… delicious.
Usually a pretty nice crowd here but I’ve never had to wait too long for a table. The only thing I’m a little upset over is the fact that they don’t seem to offer Sunday brunch anymore, for the bacon alone. I do believe they offer their bacon with some lunch/​dinner options, it’s amazing. Still a great place to go with a nice atmosphere.

I previously lived in York and went to Maewyns frequently when I lived there. It has declined since the Harp and Fiddle days. Service is horrible– our waiter on our last visit there was either drunk or high, maybe both. Food is adequate and flavorful enough, but can’t beat the White Rose or Left Bank in the same area. The atmosphere has moderate appeal.

We stopped in late for a drink and snack. Everything was good here. We first tried the reuben egg rolls — they were good for an appetizer. Then we had the fish and chops — very good. The fish was crisp and hot, and fires were fat as they should be, served with malt vinegar, so standard Irish fare, done well. Decent band played on a Saturday night, and waitress was attentive and friendly. Seems like a great place to hangout out in on the weekends if you are in downtown York

Tuesdays open mic is great. Nice atmosphere and always a surprise with performances in store. Martinis can be surprising too. I’ve had great ones and undrinkable ones that I’ve sent back.
Food ordered from the menu is great — would recommend the Thai Calamari, Crab Bruschetta, and Shepard’s Pie. Skip the brunch.

The boyfriend and I stopped in on a whim while visiting from Philly, and we were so happy we did! The staff was friendly and the tap list was great. The décor is nice, the layout is open, and it somehow does not come off as overly gimicky even though the staff wears plaid skirts and kilts. We didn’t have any food — just a few beers at the bar. (Sidenote: If they still have the Sweet Baby Jesus! on tap, drink it! It tastes like dessert!) There was live music that was very nice — good relaxed feel, not too loud. We had a nice time!

Four of us came here on a Saturday night after viewing a movie at the Capitol Theater, right across the street. It’s wonderful to be in downtown York and enjoy a foreign film and a «foreign» restaurant. We had several choices for our after-​movie coffee and conversation and settled on Maewyn’s because of the casual atmosphere and the promise of an Irish coffee. We scored big on the casual atmosphere, but struck out on the coffee.
We were seated quickly, which is always a bonus. And our waitress was very sweet, but obviously not well-​trained. We ordered our Irish coffees (2 of us decided to have soup), and imagine this — the waitress brought out small glass mugs and put a handful of plastic containers of half-​and-​half on the table. Not even on a saucer! I thought she had brought regular coffee — there was nothing special about the presentation at all and in my experience, Irish coffee always has whipped cream on top. Very disappointing. It was like being in a mom-​and-​pop Main Street café. When I questioned her on whether it was Irish coffee she seemed a little confused that I was confused! However, to be fair, the two people that had the coffee agreed that there was a generous amount of whiskey added.
After my soup, which was OK I guess — I never had colcannon before so I don’t have anything to compare it to — I ordered tea. Now, I’m in an Irish restaurant. Irish. Restaurant. I’m expecting a cute little round-​bellied pot of hot water and maybe a choice of tea bags (I love that compartmented box presented table-​side with a choice of black and green teas). And what do I get? A mug filled ¾ with water and a tea bag already floating in it. No asking if I wanted milk with it. No place to put the used bag except on the bare table top. Incredibly disappointing.
Now, as I said in the beginning, we came here to discuss the movie we had just seen. This was a challenge because in addition to the bar noise (which, in my opinion, is perfectly acceptable since it is a bar, after all) there was live music. We knew there would be live music, but this is not the best venue for it. The room is big and has nothing to absorb sound, so it was difficult to be heard over the music. I am not objecting to the live music, just suggesting that the mike or speakers be turned down a little.
Last note — I agree with other reviewers about the kilts — not Irish. Please rethink that! And more importantly, please think about training your staff better, and work on your presentation.

Your typical americanized Irish restaurant. Not «pub» because it’s a pretty gigantic place. But you know all of the normal food like fish and chips and shep’s pie and the like.
We’ve had some issues over the years with service, like bartenders wishing they could be anywhere else but working there, and small things like that, but in general, the food is always pretty good and they do have an extensive tap list and not terrible beer prices.
They have a nice upstairs room, «The Abbey» that is good for private functions and large groups.

Great service! Used the upstairs room for a private party and was very happy with everything!!! Food was perfect, wait staff was helpful and cleared quickly. Bar staff fast and helpful with beer tasting to let guests decide what they’d like. Would definitely go back!

LOVEEE it! The atmosphere is warm and homey/​cozy! They have oversized leather couches in at least two separate areas downstairs (yes, it’s two floors but the upstairs I think is reserved for high-​volume events or nights). Also, there’s a great fire place by some of the leather couches and they allow you to eat there (probably not during heavy business hours) if you ask.
Also…Keith W. on this board… who goes to an Irish place and orders wings? lol
Next time you go order something from the irish selections part of their menu. I specifically go to this place when I am fiending fish and chips and I can say that they are the best I’ve EVER had (seriously, better even than An-​pointin stil, aka The stil, in Timonium). I can’t say that I have had too much else because I don’t eat red meat and the overwhelming craving for fish and chips siezes me everytime I go… BUT I have had the potato leek soup (TO DIE FOR!) and my mom has had the shepard’s pie and she enjoyed that as well. You just have to know how to eat at restaurants, I guess… lol
Also, if you’re lucky enough to be around during Saint Patrick’s day… this place throws on heck of a party! There are cloggers and it’s jam packed with irish music and bands and such.

This place has changed some since when it was Harp and Fiddle. This was my first time coming here since then too. The first thing I noticed was the menu was a LOT smaller. My wife was interested in a wine, it’s what we had last time, why not now? It’s not on the menu, but the manger does have some house wines, no thanks. I’m not a wine snob but I know enough to pick out my own and not take the house wine which is typical a 5 liter jug or outta a box. The food was decent enough that we each ordered but not as memorable as I would have liked. Didn’t have that kick of flavor I was really hoping for, considering the place and… price.
The only thing I really enjoyed about this place was their selection of interesting beers. I might not come back here for dinner, but I might be back a again for a few brews.

It can be a rocking good time if you have the right crowd to enjoy the pub life with but for me, it’s just a nice place to stop in once a while to have a good olé fashion Irish draft.
Ate there once with Ma but have no memory of the food. Of course, that was the old pub. Who knows about the food this time.
Parking is a problem but you should be fine on Market street for that. There is a garage around the corner if you can’t find an empty spot.
Turns out the salsa upstairs was part of the york salsa meetup group. Very nice room on second floor. I like it better than the first floor, now only if they can liven it up there.

This is an excellent restaurant for any occasion. The staff are dressed in kilts for a little Irish flair, while offering very good fast service. The beer and cider selections are fantastic.
The Irish food at Maewyn is delicious and truely traditional. The 11 $ Chicken Boxty is my absolute favorite dish and the 5 $ giant bowl of beef or potato leek stew is an exceptionally good value. They serve the traditional Irish Breakfast all day at Maewyns. MMMMMM!
I had the pleasure holding a joint birthday party at Maewyns recently… the catering selection was delicious and affordable. Maewyns provided my party two private bartenders and a serving staff at no charge. They did not even charge us for the reservation of the entire upstairs for the party.
The manager Paul has proven to be very capable of creating a new favorite spot here in a city with so few desirable selections.

Since my previous review, I’ve returned to Maewyn’s twice. It has become our «before Capital concert» destination. I continue to get the pita pizza of the day which is always delicious. However, on one trip, I decided to try the Reuben. It was excellent. My wife had the pulled curried chicken salad sandwich. She loved it. The selection of tap beers is extensive. In the evenings, they have a raw bar featuring the «Buck a Shuck» Chincoteague oysters. Very nice.
One note, they were understaffed during our last visit but did a nice job filling in the gaps. The wait for drinks and food was a little longer than normal but you know what? Everyone needs to slow down the pace from time to time.

I’m a sucker for Irish pubs, and Maewyn’s definitely doesn’t disappoint. Building on the success of the Harp and Fiddle, Heritage Hills has brought their own unique touches and flair to traditional pub grub.
Diverse menu ranging from the traditional favorites of corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, lamb stew and shepherd’s pie on to cedar-​planked salmon dishes, salads and other contemporary fare.
The first floor can get boisterous with the bar as the center of attraction, but the leather sofas and fireplaces make this a popular meeting place for mid-​day meetings.
The Abbey (upstairs) features local live music, a major draw.

Maewyn’s is a fun word to say. It’s also a fun place to go!
Yes, all the serving staff wears kilts! Well, they’re not ‘authentic’ kilts, but it’s still really fun. Plus, the fish and chips arrive wrapped in newspaper, which is very authentic!
The food is quite good for pub fare. The «Irish nachos» will clot your arteries, but they are sooo delicious! It’s your typical nacho-​stuff (cheese, meat, sour cream, etc, etc), but served with potatoes instead of nachos.
The bar has a varied, but not hugely extensive, selection of whiskies, scotches, and bourbons. There’s something for everyone in that sense. The bar also has a really interesting feature: a 5-​inch wide stripe of ice that goes down the entire bar. You can put your drink on it so it stays nice and frosty!
So you see… kilts, fun foods, icey bar… it’s a nice place with fun and kitschy touches. They sometimes have live music, too.
