Planet Fitness – Ypsilanti

I’ve been coming here for about 3 years now, and I think it’s a great place to come to no matter what your fitness goals are. Some people come to build up or maintain their physique, others some just to get some exercise and stay moving (I’m in the latter camp, myself.) There seems to be a good group of regulars in the mornings, and at least for the men it’s a very friendly and encouraging group; I’ve made some really good acquaintances there that help keep me motivated to keep coming.
The equipment always seems to be in good working order; any machines that need repair are clearly marked as such and seem to be fixed within the week. I go in the mornings before work, so I haven’t noticed any lines or people waiting to get on equipment, maybe once in a while for a particular piece of weightlifting equipment like the squat rack, but that’s rare in my experience. I can’t speak for afternoons and evenings after work, but a friend of mine who tends to go during those times says it can get a little busy. You’ll also notice the ‘after New Years’ rush, but it tends to get back to normal around early February.
The men’s locker room is always clean; my only gripe would be the attention to details such as making sure all the soap dispensers are fully stocked, changing burnt-​out lightbulbs above the sinks are changed more quickly. There was a sink that was out of commission for a few months earlier this year, something wrong with the faucet or plumbing or something, and that was an inconvenience at times when you’ve got several people trying to finish up and get out for work in the mornings, but other than that there’ve been no big issues.
I’ve recommended this location to others, and would continue to do so. Some staff are more friendly than others, but I wouldn’t call any of them rude or mean, you’re just more likely to get a ‘hello/​good morning’ from some than others. I always seem to come in just as the front desk staff are doing paperwork/​accounting stuff, so I don’t think much of it to be honest. All in all, I think this Planet Fitness is a good place to come, it definitely sticks to the ‘No Judgment’ philosophy, and it’s a good place to tackle most peoples’ exercise or fitness routine. If you want to get ripped/​shredded/​grunt and yell/​buff up for your weightlifting and body building competition, there’s other places for that.

I go to about four different Planet Fitness gyms on a regular basis in the month and this is one of the stops. I like this gym a lot but it appears to be the oldest of all the gym locations.
My only real complaint is the women’s locker rooms — I don’t want to shower here ever because the doors are nearly see-​through. I feel like I’m a little spoiled with my other PF gym that has the bathroom stall-​style doors and a dark curtain. I like that there’s changing rooms that lock but the walls are pretty scuffed and marked.
Other than the locker room, I like everything else. I love that it’s 24 hours. I also love the massing chairs and tables. The people and staff has always been pretty nice. I feel like it could just use a little TLC to clean up some of the marked walls and maybe upgrade the locker rooms but other than that, I’m a fan.

I love planet fitness! The fact that the club is open 24 hours is super convenient. The staff is always friendly and happy to answer any questions. The only issue I have with this specific location is the cleanliness… The women’s locker room has a bad smell to it and needs to be taken care of…

The staff here is awesome. they are always very friendly when I come it. The gym can get VERY packed which is the only down fall… but for such a cheap membership with a clean, nice gym its understandable

I’ve been a member there for about 3 – 4 years, I’m not exactly sure. I was the $ 10/​month guy for a long time. I’ve always wanted to hate the place because it was purple, but couldn’t really ever find a better deal. This fall, I upgraded to the Black Card. This allows me to go to any PF. I did this primarily so I could drop my kid off at soccer practice in Wixom, then hit the PF there. I have also gone to the other AA PF location as well as Canton and Northville.
Not all PF locations are the same.
Not all PF locations have the same equipment.
Not all PF locations have the same free weight limit.
Not all PF locations have the same lockers, drink selections, music, or even stock Kleenex.
So, how is this one?
They seem to maintain the equipment pretty well. If something gets broken, it is usually fixed in a timely manner. They recently upgraded most of their treadmill and ellipticals. They added stair machines and arc trainers. They replaced all the 30 minute equipment.
This location is pretty clean. The parking isn’t great, but not nearly as bad as Northville or even the other Ann Arbor location.
This PF uses Life Fitness equipment. Others use other brands. This seems to be middle of the road and some of the weight machines are probably due for replacement. Given this locations willingness to upgrade, I see that happening.
I wish they would have 75 lb limit on the dumbbells. The other AA location has 75 lb weights, so it isn’t a limitation of the chain, just this location. They DID get new barbell free weights that go up to 60 lbs. This was much appreciated. Sometimes they get tied up for too long by people who won’t re-​rack them, but that isn’t the norm.
Their lockers are sort of skeezy compared to any other PF I have been in. I wouldn’t mind seeing new ones, but I would rather have the money spent on equipment, I guess. I would like to see Kleenex in the locker room.
Other areas for improvement:
1. ENFORCE YOUR RULES — No camping out in the 30 minute area. I don’t mind if somebody gets on/​off a machine without doing the circuit, but when 2 guys tie up one machine for 20 minutes? Really?
2. ENFORCE YOUR RULES #2. Very frustrating waiting for somebody to get off a machine that is just sitting there aimlessly texting/​playing with their iphone. I thought you could only use your phone in the lobby area?
3. Nit picky crapola — please stock zero calorie Poweraide. Put Kleenex in the locker room
Kudos:
1. The staff is friendly and seems to stay busy.
2. Generally pretty clean
3. Equipment stays maintained.
4. Unbeatable value for either membership level.
All in all — still there after 4 years. I haven’t found a better gym, although I have looked at a few.

This gym has plenty of machines, my boyfriend and I never have trouble finding machines to use — even during the January New Years Resolution gym rush!
The area is very clean, which is not easy to do with all the salt and snow on the ground these days.
There are vending machines for water and sports drinks and free tootsie rolls at the front desk. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful.
With plenty of nice equipment available and good staff, Planet Fitness is a great value!

DEFF not a meat market type of gym.
Love the showers and dressing rooms in the womens bathroom. They just added massage beds…
unlimited tan red light massage & workout with a shower for $ 20 speaks for itself.

One of the best deals for a gym by far and was sad to leave the establishment after I moved. For $ 20, unlimited tannings, lifting, cardio machines are never crowded. Yes please!

I think this is a standard gym and another one of those places where you get what you pay for. They offer «trainers» however all they really do is show you how to use the equipment correctly… which can be helpful if the pictures aren’t. I like that there is no contract and it’s only $ 10 a month. You do have the option of paying $ 20 that allows you to sit in the massage chairs (I know weird right?!), unlimited tanning… again, freakin awkward and awesome for those fake n bakers, and the part that I really like about the «black membership» is that you can bring a friend as many times as you want and it can be the same friend. The gym also offers free pizza every first Monday of the month, which I think kind of defeats the purpose of working out, but on the flip side to that, I guess it can be a motivator in some weird way? I just find it very distracting to focus on my workout when all I can smell is greasy pizza. They also give free bagels the second Tuesday of the month. The staff are all pretty nice and they seem to really try to take care of the gym, instead of just sitting behind the desk and on their phone. The only downside is the size of the gym. It would be awesome if they had a separate room for classes and/​or other typical gym amenities (courts, bigger weight room, pool, track). But I know I can get those at a much higher price at a different gym. It would also be awesome if the gym was open ²⁴⁄₇ instead of ²⁴⁄₇ during most of the week days.

This gym is great. They have plenty of treadmills and assorted weight machines and everything is very clean. The staff are incredibly friendly and always welcome you with a smile.

No frills, whatsoever.
But, you know, the price is right. I came here because it offered me a chance to go running before it really warmed up, and it was only ten bucks a month. The location isn’t the *greatest* — it’s in a shady little shopping plaza with a secretary of State and a dialysis place, so parking tends to be pretty difficult unless you come very early or very late.
That said, never go Monday nights. I think that’s when everyone feels bad for cutting loose on the weekend.
I’m taking a star for somewhat… lax enforcement of gym policy? I hate it when people do calisthenics (sit-​ups, push-​ups, etc.) in the relatively small *stretching* area, and I hate it when people take the machines in the 20 minute circuit even though it expressly says not to, but I don’t think the club’s employees really care too much.
The music on the club’s stereo sucks, but I don’t mind that very much because I, like everyone else, just listen to my iPod anyway.
They have a lot of treadmills, too, but I find that a lot of them are in need of some maintenance. Like how some of the the belt always slip. That seems unsafe.

The only reason I did not give four stars is because this place is somewhat lacking in cleanliness. The mats in the stretching area are pretty gross and the changing rooms in the locker room are in serious need of a deep clean. They also need to be more attentive to little repairs that need to be made (fallen coat hooks that are not replaced, toilets that flush poorly, leaky faucets).
However, I will say that this place is the best deal under the sun when it comes to basic gyms. Tons of cardio equipment and weights as well as a 30 minute circuit. People are friendly and most people clean the equipment after they use it (there is nothing more piggish than walking away without disinfecting the machine you just sweat all over).
I signed up for $ 10 per month so I can still afford to take classes elsewhere to keep my workout life not-​so-​dull.

I had to switch from Westland Planet Fitness where I LOVED because I moved. As soon as I adjusted I have to say the Planet in Ypsi people are nice. I go in at 5am and always greeted with a smile. The people are nice, they are clean, and love the equipment. I tan and work out for $ 20 a month. Love it!

Great simple fitness place, no hassle clean locker rooms. No show offs judgements just go in work out and leave as you need to. Price and facilities are great and maintained including circuit training. They don’t try to sell you something everytime you enter the door. No huge costs.

This gym offers enough for $ 10.00 a month. They offer massage chairs and unlimited tanning with the VIP plan. But tanning is pretty useless for those with dark skin. But other than that it’s cool if your trying to lose weight or get in shape.
They offer free pizza and Bagels once a month. They also have free candy at the desk when you check in.
The staff is pretty cool. And the bathroom and locker rooms are kept clean
Bonus: there open ²⁴⁄₇ mon-​fri
Overall it’s a cool gym for just $ 10.00 a month.

This place is great. 10 bucks a month with no contract and no D. B’s running around (message me if you do not know what a D. B is)
Tons of equipment, kept clean and working. Classes to help you learn how to safely use this equipment, tanners, massage chairs and more. The staff is always very attentive and helpful. I can’t ask for much more in a gym. Sure like Tara said, no pool, track and such… but who cares. it is only 10 bucks a month and open ²⁴⁄₇.

I’m giving Planet Fitness a raise. I never cared that they don’t have a pool or a track. For ten bucks a month, I will work out with machines and weights, thank you very much. When I really considered it, my only beef with PF is the terrible music they play. But I honestly think it’s gotten way better! In recent visits I’ve heard some of my favorite «get pumped» jams by groups like Talking Heads and The Isley Brothers. And the only reason that should matter to you (because maybe you hate the music I love) is that they’re mixing it up a little bit, throwing in a little something for everyone. So if you like crap reggae versions of pop hits, don’t worry. They still have something for you.
…as well as a friendly staff, cheap rates, a clean space, machines that work, food freebies, etc.

About 2 years ago I joined Planet Fitness, it was clean had nice equipment and was convenient for me being located near the freeway. I since have changed the location in which I worked, and it was no longer convenient for me to go there, even though I did like it. I had a small balance owing $ 30, I have recently recieved a letter stating they would forgive my balance if I resigned for $ 10 a month. I think this is a great deal, I am now back in the area and plan to go back and take advantage of this deal, after all nice gym, clean, friendly staff and the rates are great.
I typically take advantage of the cardio equipment and free weights.
