Hi Desert Humane Center

We have adopted 5 kitties over the years from the Yucca Valley Animal Shelter. Everything is nice and clean but I agree with another poster that having all of the cats in cages instead of being able to walk around like they used to is very sad to see.
We were not even allowed to pet the last kitten we adopted — might spread germs I guess. We had no idea what kind of personality he had because of this and he wasn’t socialized much at all. He is an ok kitty but very shy and skittish. I think it would be much better for the animals and adopters to be able to interact more with the animals.

If you plan on visiting a shelter in the High Desert please visit this one first as they are a kill shelter and you could be saving a life…
I got my cat Daisy Dazzle at this shelter. I originally went to go and look at a tortoise shell advertised as Pet of the Week in the paper but when greeted by the cats Daisy was the 1^st to approach. She was just the most outgoing persistent one year old tuxedo cat. She crawled up and onto my shoulders and rubbed her face on my cheeks. The loudest Purr I have ever heard. I just couldn’t resist! She had been spayed and I also got the microchip which they put into her in less then a minute. I got to take her home that very same day we met. That was back in 2008 and she has just been a treasure. This was the old Location though, Directly next door to the new re done and climate controlled Establishment. I love how the new place is so clean and sanitary. The only downfall I would say is that when I went to check it out– the cats are now in Cages. At the old location they were in a huge room, that had access to a outdoor mini room that they could have fresh air and sunbathe. Much better for their sanity and chances of being adopted due to healthier mental states. I hope I just missed it and the cats actually Do get to play in the air and laze about in the sun.
Besides the cats the dog runs are excellent… climate control indoors and then they can go out a doggie flap should they choose and lie in the sun and get fresh air. There is also a divider indoors so that the dogs at one end cannot see the dogs across and it cuts down on the barking. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable about the animals they work with. They know the personalities and quirks of all the different animals.
I would give them 5 stars if I saw a room for the cats to run and play free… as cats should always be allowed do as they please!

I adopted a Black Lab from here, she was going to be put down soon when I found her. She is a great dog.
This is a kill shelter, so give them a look before going to a no kill shelter.

The animal shelter is only about five minutes down the road off of the 62. Once you get about 2 miles down the road you will see a sign pointing right for the animal shelter and just head down this dirt road. It will be on your left side. I was impressed with the amount of cleanliness this shelter offers. Before you even walk in the door there is a disinfectant mat you need to step on, and hand sanitizer required before you see the animals. They have misters above the kennels to keep the animals nice and cool in the summer heat with an additional dog house in each kennel. This is the cleanest animal shelter I have seen which is good for the dogs and cats. I don’t think many people come visit this animal shelter so I hope after people read this, there will be more visitors for the young and older animals.
