Briccone, much like Busker’s Café at the other end of Rundle Mall, is a conveniently located café with a pleasant atmosphere. Whilst it’s situated in the centre of the mall’s walkway, sitting down to enjoy a coffee isn’t stressful, and rather time slows down as you see people walking by. The baristas are very quick to process your order, and the coffee doesn’t take long before its steaming hot and ready for collection at the counter. It’s dark and rich, just the way coffee should be. Whether it be sitting down to enjoy your coffee or getting it on the go, the convenient location has people coming in and out of the place at all times of the day. Whilst the shaded seating faces the T-junction, and looking at cars isn’t all that exciting, it’s much better on a hot day, as the lack of cover on the other side can make things a little too warm.

It seems like a really popular place to go, and I’m not sure why. Maybe because there aren’t really any great cafes down Rundle Mall, but who knows. The coffee isn’t terrible here, it’s adequate, I do generally like the service I get given here, but I really don’t like the set out of the place — feeling quite cramped. I’d rather go for a short walk out of Rundle Mall to get a good cup of coffee.

This relatively new mid-mall café is often quite busy, so be sure to be diligent get a table before the hordes of customers arrive. Their food is decent, good café style food. What you’d expect. But on my couple of times eating there I was never overly excited with the food served up to me. It was fine, but nothing amazing and nothing horrible. Their coffee is also fine, nothing to write home about, but also nothing to write consumer affairs about. It’s decent, good, certainly better than Cibo or Gloria Jeans. It’s interesting having a café in the centre of the mall, especially one that is licensed. I think this may be the attraction. Sitting in the middle of the mall, monitoring the surrounding humans, sipping on a glass of wine, is quite the experience.

14/12/2011 Make sure you get here before lunch, as it can get quite packed in the afternoon! I highly agree with the waitress’ recommended choice of breakfast — I can’t complain over $ 9 for a good morning greeting from a cute waitress that gave me a smile, banana bread with butter, complete with a warm café latte. Her parents must have been good-looking too, cos Mmm… Oh, sorry, am I allowed to Unilocal that here? However, to my disappointment, she was too busy running around the shop to stop and have a long chat with me. I understand. There were wide entrances on both sides so a nice cool breeze was blowing in to my delight. Great coffee, plenty of tables to choose from in the AM, very fast service by waitresses, and a menu of breakfast, coffee, and other standard treats. This is definitely a cutie waitress eye candy fest I won’t mind returning to another morning. I can’t get over that delicious banana bread. That was the best soft banana bread I’ve ever tasted!(It’s been a long day, ok? …but I will entertain myself later by hitting the pubs with friends!)

Having walked past this place a million times on my way through Rundle Mall, it was only recently that I discovered its name and made an effort to go in and try it out. It is a great place for meeting people in the city because it’s so centrally located and everybody who is anybody knows where Rundle Mall is so there is zero chance of people getting lost. Inside the tables are pretty cramped together as it is quite a small space, but there always seem to be people in there in most parts of the day. They offer breakfast quite late and there are always people ducking in for a coffee mid-shop to get that extra kick to push on. The only very annoying thing is because its table service, you pay afterwards before you leave. Which, as a concept is totally fine, except if you are sitting in the outside area. Every single time I have sat there I have gotten up to leave without thinking to go inside the pay. It gets me every time and is just a little annoying. The covered area inside is also really dark which is just odd and sort of perplexing.

Briccone is located at the end of Rundle Mall(corner of Pulteney Street, where Target is). It is right in the middle of the street and hard to miss. It is a small café/restaurant that offers very good coffee, sandwiches(try the chicken avocado) and full meals for lunch and dinner. I love that it has plenty of chairs outside, so you can just sit, relax and watch the crowds in Rundle Mall walk past.(I’ve seen some pretty interesting characters while having my coffee here) The inside is rather small but very beautifully designed for a ‘box’ that just sits in the middle of the street. Staff can be a bit of a hit and miss. some people are lovely, others just seem to have a lot of bad days. But anyway, that has never been a reason to turn me away from Briccone. Prices are average, however, the coffee is heaps better than some of their competitors in that area.
