Hains & Co

You would never know that Hains & Co was here — tucked between the gaudy Penang Restaurant and the dodgy Pancake Kitchen in Gilbert Place. Looking from afar you wouldn’t think much of it, but step closer and you’d be blown away by the ship like interior, cosy booths and frames on the walls. Just shows how important ambiance and atmosphere is — it can make a place memorable.
Didn’t get any food there (there is a nice looking bar food menu), but there is an extensive drinks list from wine to beer, from homebrew to hard liquor. I got the Applelachian cocktail which was to die for — straight bourbon mixed with home cooked apple purée, lemon juice and a stick of vanilla. Mmm mmm.
Maybe be prepared to fish out a bit from your wallet for the drinks, but they are worth it. Swing by after work on a Friday afternoon to unwind and have a good time.

We came here for rum and cigars for my birthday — YES YES YES! Obviously cigar-​smokers sit outside, and while they are not cheap here, they are excellent quality (as is everything here). The staff are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I confess after a night of drinking, I didn’t participate in the extra gin that the others had, but I was assured it was delicious.
And I will just have to mention the gogeous toilets … is that wrong for a Unilocal review? Well, I’m mentioning anyway that they are fabulous ;)

I really liked this venue — the location REALLY surprised me, and it’s unexpected location made it seem even more cool. The décor was brilliant — everywhere you look there is something interesting and new to be seen.
I only had a glass of white wine and it was nice — I managed to sit here and chat to friends for a couple of hours on a Saturday night without feeling like I should move along and it was easy to hear everyone at the table, even though this obviously popular venue was packed!
I did encounter one bar tender who was kinda rude — and unapologetically so however after that a different bar tender came to clear our table and his hilarious banter and energy totally made up for the other, ruder staff member.

So good! Cool, funky, and friendly staff. An amazing nautical theme with my favourite pieces being the custom posters framed on the walls.
Specialising in the drinks of sailors: rum and gin you will have a wonderful gin and tonic. The warmed cider also looks amazing. Lots of seating and the manager would chat to us as he walked by.

My first visit to Hains & Co was on the Elite World Gin Day Tour and so impressed was I that another visit at an opportune moment was vital.
So this was on a Friday night, when the rest of Adelaide was abuzz with pure Radelaideness! As on my last visit — H&C was busy with serious party animals and the atmosphere decibel level was peaking. World Gin Day saw H&C invent a new gin drink made from Lime Marmalade — on tap — so another one was inevitable. Sadly though it was not be — it was no longer available and was pointed out by the amazing bar staff that it was simply for that day. T’was disappointing but not a major setback as another gin based delight was suggested; Gin and Cointreau. I’m not a fan of Cointreau it has to be said, but being ever adventurous — I was game. It arrived adorned with a daisy head as decoration and looked delicious. One sip had me hooked! 3 of these delights later saw me ‘have my fill’ as at $ 17 each, my wallet began to groan.
Hains and Co is a delight. The bar staff are amazing fun with their constant antics and every 15 minutes or so in unison shouted «Splice The Main Brace» and proceeded to pour themselves shots of only they know what! Brilliant fun! If you haven’t adorned H&C — do so. It’s a fab little place with the most amazing atmosphere. I’m intending on being a regular when the mood suits. So that’ll be weekly! :)

Have now been here twice and enjoy the vibe and ambience of this nautically-​themed bar. Another beautifully-​presented fitout with cool fixtures and fittings and an ever-​expanding drinks list. On my first visit, I had a gin and tonic with a coriander garnish that was unexpected and amazing. The sausage rolls also went down a treat.
Again, it’s another one of those buzzing new bars that Adelaide is pumping out by the day, with a warm and welcoming vibe and comfortable ambience. No, you aren’t going to get cheap drinks here but they will be very nice drinks.

Hains & Co seems to be my go-​to bar these last few weeks and while it’s gaining popularity, I haven’t had trouble finding bar space to lean on or seats if I felt like seating. The great cocktails (Mr Verona is my fav «mixologist», the other staff have been so-​so), welcoming vibe, cool tunes, and an intimate space, with lovely wooden and brass finishings just keeps me coming back. I’ve also had the beers, which changes every few weeks (smoked beer on tap now) — always a good excuse to keep returning. I haven’t tried the cheese board (or wines) yet but they look great.
The set up is conducive to small group catch ups or canoodling. Thank goodness they have heating outside, so it’s a good spot to hang out too. I highly recommend this bar.

This little back alley bar is not going to stay a secret in Adelaide for long. It is glowing from behind its surrounding buildings. Walking down Gilbert Place you can hear the laughter and chatter from its patrons. Hains & Co draws you in from afar with it’s cute and stylish exterior. It’s bar opens to the street side allowing customers to set up a stall and have a drink outside. This will be perfect for summer and this area is heated for the winter. it is very comfortable!
The best part of this bar is the styling within. Walking through the door you immediately transcend from the alley to the deck of a ship. The back room is cleverly furbished with old style booths and the ceiling features a wooden roof like the birth of a boat. There are old chesterfield lounges and almost steampunk styled chairs with a mix of metal and wood. There is a lot of love and planning in the design of this bar.
The bar itself is dressed and lit with gorgeous woven rope lighting. The bar holds an impressive collection of rum & gin amongst other liquors. There is also changing tap of craft beer and a welcoming menu of cocktails to choose from. The handsome staff and owner are experts in the way of Gin & Rum, feel free to speak to them about recommendations.
The cheese platter I ordered features one of my favs D’argental, a truffle brie and cheddar. It is served with grapes, home smoked almonds, lavosh, and dried currents. This is perfect with a fine wine or cocktail on a Friday afternoon. As for the rest of the menu, I am told that the sausage roll is truly divine. I look forward to trying it.
Finally, I have to admit Hains & Co is now one of my favourite bars in Adelaide. I am drawn to it. I am really overjoyed to have it grace our streets.

Genuine love and care have gone into crafting a nautical themed bar that’s got style in spades. Visiting here with the crew was a delight as we sat in the large area of booths and tables next to a decked out bar that opens out onto the street.
Nestled beside the pancake kitchen it’s hidden away from the horrors of Hindley while still being in a plum of a spot. As far as the drinks go, wow delish the spiced pear margarita was bombastic and was made with style!
The staff and owner have stressed the details here and that’s what makes it so special. The décor really stands out and it’s awesome to see no Ikea or Neds tacky pieces in sight for a change! Will definetly be making myself a fixture here, won’t disappoint! Holy ship this place is a shore thing… sorry just need to get the puns out of my system.

Loved everything about this place, which is easy to do with a cocktail bar, but Hains & Co deserve special mention.
For a start they specialise in Gin and Rum. If you like either of those two things then drop what you’re doing and come here immediately!
I love both of those things, plus I loved every beer they had on tap (which rotate between craft brewers, by the way) and had a huge hole in my heart for the cheese platter, which was divine.
About the décor and atmosphere: expect a flawlessly executed 1940s nautical theme. If you take the time to speak to the admiral (yes they use naval ranks here) you will find a rich history behind the choices used here.
Cocktails are superbly blended and matched. A strong recommendation for the Dark n’ Stormy (not ‘and’)
This place is a must to impress your friends from interstate!

Cool relatively new place, with great drinks, a cool laid-​back atmosphere be it inside or on a table out in the lane-​way. Obvious maritime theme is both kind of hokey and cool at the same time, with many interesting small touches in the fit-​out to ensure Hains stands apart from the crowd.
