Whilst I didn’t sample any of the beverages of Maybe Mae, I can however review other aspects of this classy yet cosy little hideout of Adelaide. The décor of the bar is wonderful, it certainly takes you back to the golden age of the 30s. It is very Gatsby. I did look at the drinks menu and it sounded very appetising. The service was really lovely and the music played was quite chilled out, which was fitting for the atmosphere I experienced there. The only downside, is that it can become very warm very quickly.

BARREVIEW I love everything about this bar. It is banging. The fact that each time I’ve been, there has been at least one other group trying to work out how to actually get in the venue absolutely cracks me up. I love it! Once you work out how to get in, it feels like you’re in an old Chicago mob movie. Like you could sidle up to the bartender, order three fingers of the cheapest scotch in the house and have a good, proper long yarn about why you’re out on the town hitting the booze still after two weeks of not being home, your wife is worried sick, you just lost your job and the bank man has been chasing you for all your debts all week long. I used to work in a bar similar to this, and I still miss dealing with such a vast range of different characters. It’s an experience I will never soon forget. But, back to reality! This place is actually really cool for all its own reasons. I love a good booth. And I love enjoying a booth with a couple of mates and a couple of beers, to be handed some nuts and bolts by the bartender cos he’s a top bloke. This was easily one of the most enjoyable nights out I’ve had recently without the missus. I hope this place is around for a while, because it’s awesome. If it had the space for a dusty old piano, I think I’d try and move in — change my name to Joe. Call all the bar staff ‘kiddo’. Live la vida alco. Or maybe just pop in a bit more.

I am loving the underground bar movement in Adelaide. Very Melbourne. This place is very trendy and stylish, although not huge in size. I tried the ‘Getting Fizzy With It’ cocktail which was $ 19. Quite pink and tasty! There is quite a selection of gin, liquers and wines. It’s not really a beer on tap kind of place. They also played Elvis when I was there but it worked. The bar staff are quite friendly and not bad to look at ;). Good place to go for after work or dinner drinks.

Not a Wine Bar, staff were pleasant enough, everyone was having a good time and they had good music playing. But i was looking for a good glass of red as a night cap, so i asked for the wine list, no wines by the glass. I was then asked what I was looking for, a good Shiraz, Barossa or McLaren Vale. I was served a glass of red with a head better than some beers, and on tasting a pretty obvious scent of VA, and definitely not Shiraz from anywhere. So I returned the wine and was about to leave but the delved into a cupboard and got out the best they could offer a GSM from somewhere SA. No extra charge. I would love to go there with friends sometime but I won’t be back for a glass of wine. They should be removed from searches for wine bars.

Stumbled across here not knowing where I was on my first night in Adelaide. I thought I was going to the bar/restaurant upstairs but the bouncer lead us to a random door disguised in the wall a few steps down and voila! we were in some hidden trendy bar. It’s a small random place with booths along the side — definitely not somewhere you want to be if it’s packed but nonetheless its a pretty cool spot. The cocktails — Bill Murray and Kiwi Herman were delish and definitely recommend those

Love this little bar. It’s hidden away underground behind a concealer door. The atmosphere is great, the music is cool and they serve decent beer. What more can you ask for from a bsr?

Great whiskey and gin selection, and some great cocktails. Not all bartenders are up to scratch on whipping up an innovative drink, but if you ask, they’ll find you an answer among their collective talents. Fabulous 50s American music to keep the mood.

A groovy, happy, contenting underground bar. Have a burger upstairs. Go downstairs for a nightcap.

Who doesn’t love a secret doorway into a cool new bar? Adelaideans seem to be spoiled of late, with a rash of new bars popping up across town, and happily they have embraced them with open arms. …this however may mean a short wait to get into some of the cooler places like Maybe Mae on Saturday nights, but it’s worth it. Only complaint was that it was really stuffy and boiling when we were there around midnight — obviously thoroughly warmed up from it being brimming with bodies since the afternoon. Could do with a touch better ventilation in some pockets of the bar perhaps. Otherwise MM is a great cocktail bar with a hefty range of cocktails and a cool place to introduce to your friends.

Love this place! Hidden away you could easily miss the door hidden in the wall. Trying to push panels in the wall to find which one will take us to our drinks heaven. Once inside we were transported back in time and immediately greeted and shared a few laughs. We chose our booth and started bopping to music while we read our cocktail menu. Wow, the range of cocktails was amazing! Any that you choose from here are sure to be mixed to perfection. There is no way I could choose one favourite. I will have to return to work my way through more of their cocktail menu.

The Melburnian in me wanted to squeal with delight as we stood outside the hidden door of Maybe Mae and my guide said«now I just need to remember which wood panel to push on». It’s true, we love speakeasy style bars and it seems that now Radeladians do too! But what good is your fancy-pants-can’t-seem-to-find-it door if your drinks, service and venue aren’t up to much snuff? Fortunately the kids here at Maybe Mae know what they’re doing. I was warmly greeted, given a bit of bartender banter and a recommendation for a great glass of local wine all within minutes of arrival. My request for«something snacky» was met with an apology that they didn’t have a bar menu and instead a heaving glass of pretzel sticks. Win! The booths around the side of the room are gorgeous and would make for an amazing night out with the girls, but my guess is you’d need to get here early to score a spot. The back bar boasts a great selection of spirits and I was sad not to have the time to explore the cocktail list.

This place is cool — but calling it cool makes it seem ‘un-cool’…hip…maybe it’s hip? No, that sounds like something my mum would say, or something my grandma would break when trying to dance to the funky tunes blasting out in Maybe Mae. Generally I hate lines, waiting in them is even worse but for some reason(there’s a story, but I won’t bore you with it here…) I decided, one particular night, that Maybe Mae was worth it. I stood in the cold winter air for around 35 minutes on a Friday night, made a few friends in the line(including the bouncer) and before I knew it, I was wondering down stairs — but I didn’t really know where I was going… you see the entrance is kinda hidden… which is actually really *cringe* cool! The bar area is small and was therefore crowded, but it actually felt comfortable — like it’s supposed to be crowded? I dunno! Some friends were already inside and had snagged a couple of booths(yay) which were a totally awesome place to haul up for a catch up, every now and then getting up to dance to the wickedly *cringe* hip retro beats! Now I didn’t order a drink that night BUT the drinks menu looked to be both extensive and awesome. Based on other reviews, I’ll certainly be back to try some cocktails — and hopefully avoid the line next time because even though this gorgeous venue is worth lining up for, my feet would prefer to be sore from dancing than waitin in the cold!

I think I have died and gone to Espresso Martini heaven. Super cool little bar, that you can almost miss with the hidden doors. loved the 70’s style décor, especially the booths which our group of 6 managed to score. We had a few different rounds of cocktails, the Espresso Martini was a hit as well as the Popcorn/vodka cocktail(I don’t recall the official name) it was such a bizarre delicious mix of flavours. The bar staff were really cool, nice and friendly. Only reason I don’t give this place 5 stars would be because of the wait for the cocktails. I’m not stupid I understand that cocktails aren’t instant drinks, but it seemed that there was only one staff member making the cocktails? leading to a 15 – 20 minute wait. That would be my only negative remark. Will definitely be heading back to Maybe Mae!

Another reason to love Peel St. Enter via a hidden trap door and you’ll fall in love with this groovy little underground bar that’s been open only three weeks. Unpretentious but trendy vibe, good music, hardworking bar staff and reasonably priced & well made cocktails(most $ 18). Upon entering the bar we headed to the left and perched on the bar and pretty much stayed there till 1am. Music was loud but we could still chat and met lots of friendly people there, so it had a very nice cosy atmosphere. There are booth style seats for groups and we noticed that there were lots of attractive, young women there, so the gender ratio was not as even as Clever Little Tailor or Bank St Social(FYI: massive line outside at 10am on a Sat night!).

Love, love & love this fancy new bar on Peel Street! Behind those barely noticeable doors in the wall is a bar full of endless delights! The music, the décor, the expresso martini’s & the bartenders were all such a hit. After ordering my second expresso martini for the night, the bartender informed me it would be a 10 minute or so wait and gave me a free champagne while I was waiting, which topped off how much I loved this place. Maybe Mae is definitely the newest & best new bar to hit Adelaide! If going there on a Saturday night, be prepared for a bit of a queue(it’s definitely worth the wait though!).

Best new bar in Adelaide. Fantastic wine and beer selection, and well priced. Maybe Mae is located downstairs/underground and has a very unique 70s inspired décor. Big booths means that the bar is great for groups. Definitely try the espresso martini — maybe mae has their own twist on this popular drink that is sure to be a hit!
