The crown and anchor what can I say? Other than to be now a local down here you are The Cranker. From the outside it is a typical dive bar from the inside potentially viewed as the same, but the atmosphere is very different. If you are looking for more heavy live bands to enjoy your beer from tap listening to some local band this is the place for you. The clientele is a mixture of men and women in their work clothes, older men with big old grey beards to that Uni student that can’t afford to go to a hoity toity bar where you pay double the price for a beer on tap. Monday’s you may hear a band playing while you enjoy playing some pool with a frothy in hand. Wednesday’s it turns into a tiny nightclub(free entry) with a dj who plays the golden oldies and the trashy newies, and cheap beers(3 bucks for a scooner until 11). This is the time and place to meet Uni students too poor to eat anything other than noodles in a cup but willing to buy those 3 dollars scooners. The bartenders may have beards they spend more time styling than a girl doing her hair and covered in tattoos but are all fantastic at their Job kind, friendly(and they give great head with that beer). If you are on the queer side of things the cranker is a great place to meet your fellow gender enthusiasts normally Wednesday’s and Thursday’s. Yes the pub is grotty and grimy but the atmosphere, the bar staff and the excellent range of drinks on tap will make you remember we are all humans who can enjoy a nice beer with friends new and old. I give the whole place 10 out of 10 despite the live music(which isn’t to my taste). Check this place out and don’t forget if you want to fit in as a local it’s the CRANKER!

This pub has many monikers(some of which I really shouldn’t repeat in polite company) but to me it will always be ‘The Cranker’. There was a time when every Saturday Night I could be found sitting at the bar next to one of my friends drinking Coopers Pale Ale. Mind you, those days have long since gone, and for a while I refused to have anything to with this place, however since moving to Melbourne that has changed, and the other night, for the first time in years I wandered in here and had a drink and all I can say is that, with the exception of the beers on tap, very little has changed. This is still the Crown and Anchor from my youth. Basically it is a grunge pub, and is incredibly popular one at that. There have been times, particularly on New Years Eve, where this pub is packed to the brim, yet you know that you can always get in here, no matter what you look like(unless you look drunk of course). Then there is the upstairs area where they have a pretty nice balcony bar, though that is not strictly a part of the pub. As for music, expect the local bands to be playing here on a Friday and Saturday, and while they do have DJ music, if you’re looking for electronica, then you really should be looking elsewhere.

I love this place. Pin ball win Cool bar staff win Even cooler music variety win Always a great vibe when I’m there :) It can get pretty packed but if there’s room playing pool with a bunch of mates is of top priory in this establishment. Toilet is pretty tiny so expect to wait(ladies) Outside area great to sit down and drink and/or smoke. Great social pub :)

There is nothing quite like a reclaimed old man pub when you’re just looking for somewhere to sit and get a drink. The Cranker is one of my ‘stop in’ places when I am in the City of Churches.

The Crown & Anchor is a pub with history, an old favourite of the Adelaide East End. I remember being a little intimated when I was a kid coming past this place, as the crowd hanging about outside consisted of some pretty heavily tattooed folk and industrial Goths. Now that I’m older I can laugh at that, as they are undoubtedly harmless. There’s nothing all that special about the Cranker when it comes to décor or seating arrangements, but it’s a cool place to grab a drink or catch a gig if you’re on the Rundle Street end of town. Their drinks are cheap, and if you manage to secure a table on a busy weekend then you’ll be set up for the evening. The staff is friendly, but make sure you bring some bravado when you order your drink. I was a told a story by an ex-employee where a hipster came in and asked for a «vodka liiiiiime», to which the bar staff all sniggered under their breaths. Don’t be a pussy — order a beer!

An Adelaide rite of passage! Most of my memories of this place are of last drinks being called, lights coming on, ding ding home time. 100% pretension-free and just plain good fun.

Better known as the Cranker, this laid-back pub is a great place to chill out with mates any day of the week. Prices are decent, everyone is friendly and there’s a general jolly atmosphere. Yes, jolly! You can expect a casual, more alternative crowd here with, in my opinion, fantastic taste in music. Expects a mix of metal, rock, alternative, punk and some pop music. Pool is popular here but be sure to put your money on the table to shotgun a game because it’s popular, especially on busier nights. Local bands often play in the back room, which is small but does the job. Outside offers a few tables and chairs for smokers, you can also bring your drink out but make sure your sitting down with it so the bouncers don’t get tell you off. I personally love this place, although it’s definitely not for everyone. If you’re into wearing fancy dresses and heels or a V-neck and pink shorts, I’d probably give it a miss.

I enjoy a Friday night at the«Cranchor» as it is nicknamed. There’s usually a live, vibrant crowd and great drink specials. Live music is often going on in the back room. Get on the pool tables or sit outside and puff a cigg and drink a beer or Sailor Jerry. Many pub-crawls seem to frequent this pub, it is incredibly popular amongst the younger crowd. Their jukebox also has an unrivalled selection of awesome music.

This is one of Adelaide’s better pubs, especially if you’re wanting to avoid the young drunken louts that occupy some of Adelaide’s other pubs. I love the laid back feel of The Cranker. No need to dress up. In fact if you do, you’ll stick out like a sore thumb. There are plenty of areas to sit down and chat over a few drinks, or maybe you’d like to play a few games of pool. Many of the patrons at The Cranker are faithful regulars, and the reason being is that it’s a cool place to hang out.

More affectionately known as The Cranker. I spent a lot of my time is back in the day(as in, 3 years ago) I was cranking it out every weekend, and to this day, I’m not really sure why. I sidled into The Crown and Anchor the other weekend because my guy friends were there playing pool against this other guy that kinda resembled Jesus. Needless to say — they didn’t win. This bar has its good points and its bad. it’s good that it isn’t situated on Hindley st but its bad that I feel like a complete tosser walking in there wearing high heels and a cocktail dress when everyone else appears to have made special effort to dress down… The bar staff don’t win any points, I asked for a water and I got one raised eyebrow, a scotch glass and no straw. I know I’m being prissy but come on. Despite all that, the place has a certain charm, I wouldn’t complain if I had to chill at the bar all night nursing a single pint of beer because this place is fun to people watch. Everyone is so laid back that they almost seem to forget that The Cranker isn’t their lounge room. The Crank isn’t a night out, its more like a night in with travel time.

If you are looking to grab a beer without the bullshit this is the place to be. The Crown & Anchor(or The Cranker as we like to call it) is without a doubt, my favourite pub in Adelaide. I frequent this pretentious free zone most nights I’m out to get my Sparkling Ale on tap(and I want to fuckin marry it). Live bands play in the side room most weekends with DJs is the front bar during the week. This bar attracts a lot of loyal regulars, and is also a great venue for local music There’s no dress code here, and no reason to feel judged(It’s the only place I feel comfortable rocking out in a dress without the fear of getting beaten up). I must also note that I’ve only ever been kicked out of this venue once. Come in during the day if you get bored, shoot some pool and take the piss out of Boundy.
