Sensational time spent at the races for Perth Cup on New Years Day! I usually go general admission but my friends and I decided to go in a marquee this time. $ 260 per person for the Beach Party marquee. This got us an air conditioned marquee with all the food and drinks we could handle. There were modelling parades on the catwalk, a dj and band. Plenty of room inside and outside but limited seating. You had to get in there early to grab a couch! We shared a table outside in the shade with other race goers when we first got there and scored a couch inside at the end of the day. Food was delightful and constant and staff were very attentive, always greeting us with a smile. The marquee was trackside so we had a perfect view of the horses. A few winners and places and we had a top day out. Would highly recommend going to Ascot for the season. There are quite a few race days and various packages to choose from.

Ascot is the premier racecourse in WA, playing host to WA’s most important races, such as the Railway Stakes and the Perth Cup. The Perth Cup is also held near the new year, so it offers an excuse for people to dress up in order to welcome the new year. Depending on the time of the year, the people around you may, or may not be, interested at all in the happenings of the racecourse. Which is fine by staff, as long as you remain well-behaved. For those who do fancy a flutter, it can be exhilarating entering the bookie’s ring, who will vie for your attention by offering various odds for a race. For those wanting a more sedate time, there is also a TAB outlet, but really — the bookie’s ring is the place to go if you’re looking for a bet. The TAB outlet is sterile and boring by comparison. Ascot is an excellent racecourse with great facilities. Whether you’re attracted to the horses or to the«best dressed» competition, Ascot can be a fun place to visit for a day.

I attended the Perth Cup in Ascot Racecourse on New Year’s Eve, and it was one of the best New Years I’ve had yet(and you know how they can be a huge let down!). The whole event was planned out and executed remarkably well. There was no queue to get in, everything was moving along incredibly quickly for an event that saw almost 20,000 people show out. There was security at the gate checking IDs and putting ‘drinking age’ arm bands on anyone who was 18 – 25. Then there was a prefab set up to sell tickets to those who hadn’t already bought online, and again, no queues in sight. Inside the racecourse was decked out with food stalls and bars, as well as VIP areas and betting marquees. As the VIP area tickets were sold out we spent the day inside the betting marguee, keeping an eye on the tote prices and watching the races on the screens inside. It was too hot to watch from the edge of the course, and the grandstand was full by the time we showed up. Having been to big race days in other countries, I was surprised at the differences in dress code. Me and my friends showed up in our best dresses and suits as we expected a strict dress code, but some of the other race goers were in shorts and trainers. After the last race we scrambled out the door only to find the queue for the taxis was loooong already, but with the help of the patient and authoritative ushers, the taxis flowed in and were filled quickly, so in the end we were only waiting 15 – 20 minutes. A great day all round!
