Gio’s is a solid café. I would like it to be a little more dog friendly. I had to sort of smuggle my dog even to the most distant table, and I was still roused on. Still, I come back out of tradition and for their club sandwiches.

Gio’s is a very traditional café/restaurant with nice al fresco tables on the footpath, a menu of standard but satisfying fare, friendly staff, and a relaxed atmosphere. I like Gio’s because while a lot of the coffee/food places along Racecourse Road can be a little bit bland or even pretentious, Gio’s strikes me as a very honest place. There’s no fancy but misleading menu descriptions or snooty staff. Just good old-fashioned food like pizza, pasta, lasagne, sandwiches, salads, and cakes, fairly decent coffee, and laid-back but efficient customer service. Racecourse Road can get a little bit ‘Ascot’ at times, especially if you’re unaccustomed to dealing with the ladies who lunch set. Gio’s provides a little touch of old, pre-trendy Ascot and is always a refreshing place to stop and linger over a cup of coffee or lunch.

Gio’s pretty darn good. It’s opened for breakfast and until the end of lunch. I’ve been here a handful of times with my wife to and have ordered pasta and pizza for lunch. The dishes are always fresh and tasty, especially the bolognaise. The pizzas always from top to bottom are yum worthy and always have a substantial topping to cheese ratio. The coffees that the barista turns out are pretty good on the whole, sometimes I’ve had to return a cuppa with a slightly burned flavour to it. You can get takeaway sandwiches that are made fresh. However, in my experience they can taste a bit bland. The staff and owners who run the Gio’s are really friendly and their banter is always funny and happy. It’s always comforting to know that they want you to enjoy your experience. Good place to go when the other places near the racecourse are full.
