Pause Bar is a local late night option that so often slips my mind. Despite it’s strong Moroccan themed aesthetic, it’s unfortunately a little bit forgettable. While not a «destination» spot, its a great option for a late night casual meet-ery in the St Kilda East/Balaclava area, which is so dominated by breakfasty spots. I think more than anything it would make a great function venue for a Christmas party or private event– seems a perfect sized venue for such things.

Y’know, I’d forgotten this place existed? It wasn’t till I was strolling past the other day that the memories came rushing back. Back in 2004, I moved into an apartment in Grosvenor st with a friend of mine. By a freaky coincidence, two friends of ours moved into an apartment in a block just across the laneway. This was the first place I went drinking with any of them. And that’s what it’s perfect for. It’s not a place for going wild, but this middle-eastern themed bar is a great place to just sit back with a candle on your table and chill with a friend or two. The décor’s maybe a little over the top, but I think that actually helps make me feel at ease.

Pause Bar on Carlisle St has always intrigued me as it’s always got live music that you can hear from down the street. It seems very down-to-earth so it draws you in where the setting of the bar and décor is appealing. It does, however, have a tiny bit of an empty feeling where this might be due to the fact that the time I went they had a horrible live musician singing out of key. Wasn’t good at all! It was a bit sad, as it was a beautiful night in a nice atmosphere, however now I walk past and listen to the different music where I’m getting slowly put off by the choices they make. It doesn’t suit the rustic, stylish feel the bar transcends. The bar offers a good wine, beer and cocktail menu but may be losing clients with their music choices.

Now, Pause is a little bit of a hidden shame of mine. For someone who enjoys great food and a fantastic aesthetic, this isn’t exactly the place to find it. But every so often my friends and I will want a late drink during the night, and this place is local, and so we go. What my friends don’t know is that I actually quite like it. The décor, though totally kitsch, kind of works, the place is always open, and the soy chai teas are reallllly good. Yeah, I said it. I would never go to the this place to have a great night out, or go here to eat for that matter, but if you’re looking for a quiet place to get a midweek drink then Pause it is.

My friends and I were trying to think of a place that was local and would be open for coffee when most other places were shut at night. We all paused for a second and realised that was the answer. Pause has a very nice relaxed atmosphere and is the perfect place to sit with a cup of tea, a couple of friends and talk about the week that was.
