The lady at the door made sure to tell us immediately that Best Food Gallery was under new management, which straight away gave the impression the previous iteration did not have the best reputation around these parts. With subsequent low expectations we sat at our wonky table, boxed in from too close-up neighbouring tables, and our noses were overwhelmed with the pong of a stinky fish a guy at the table next to us was busy tucking into. It got a lot better from there. Hands down the best service we’ve received at a Box Hill eatery, and perhaps at any Chinese restaurant!(low bar, I know). Multiple super-friendly staff members falling over themselves to see to our every need — it’s clear they’re really trying to make an impression, and it was a really welcome experience. Food wasn’t the best in Box Hill, but for the price was good enough to warrant a re-visit some time in the future, and previous visitors might find the new version of BFG is worth a re-visit now also.

The food here is «cheap Box Hill» at its best. Sure the service is patchy, the ambience a bit tattered, but where else can you get a plate of blue swimmer crab(whole crab) and noodles for $ 11? And the dumplings are very good — essential for any restaurant in Box Hill that attracts a Chinese clientele. The lady that owns it is friendly too. I go here at least once a month, a bit of an institution like David and Camy’s.

I am not going to bother trying to make a joke out of the name, because it really is just way too easy. The Best Food Gallery is far from the best. I went once and that was enough. A group of us were after some dumplings and wandered in around 9pm. The restaurant wasn’t very busy and the staff were lurking up the back so we took a seat. We didn’t get any menus until we literally stuck up our hands in the air. When the staff came back eventually to take our orders they were ungracious and pretty impolite. We probably should have left at that point, but for some reason we decided to stick it out. Bad move. We ordered a few different variations of dumplings and settled down. They took forever and when they did come out, tasted as though they had been heated up after being in a frozen packet. Definitely not satisfied. Sometimes you have to try new things, and sometimes you just wish you hadn’t.
