Lunches only, if you can handle consistently no smile, fast, good and cheap Asian Hawker menu, then this is the place. Perfect for a quick meeting place, plenty of fried and soup noodles, Roast &BBQ Pork and Roast Duck. Can’t go wrong … quick trip down those Hawker centres in South East Asia.

Decided to have dinner here based on how busy the restaurant was when we walked past… And the delicious looking bbq duck & pork hanging in the window. We had a selection of dim sum as well as seafood laksa and mixed veges with oyster sauce. We had the combination platter of bbq and got duck and char siu pork… the duck was a bit too salty for my liking but would have been great for duck pancakes(which I was disappointed not to find on the menu). The char siu was delicious and we were almost fighting over the sauce it come with… if I had rice, I would have poured it over! Seafood laksa was spicy and tasty, I’m not well versed on laksas but I was pretty impressed. The food isn’t anything hugely outstanding but the flavours are good and everything is reasonably priced. We all left well satiated with happy tums.

Alright, I may preface this review by saying that I was slightly inebriated when visiting this fine establishment at around 2am on Saturday night. From what I remember, the food was hot and tasty and they put up with us being rowdy and very likely obnoxious on a Saturday night. I’m sure we ordered some dumplings of some sort and pot sticker-like things. Wow, maybe this isn’t such a helpful review… I’d go back, great late night eats.

Okay so I know it’s a chain. But the love I feel for the Box Hill China Bar knows no bounds. The service at the Box Hill restaurant is phenomenal. I personally find the service charming, although it may not resemble the usual 5 star service at restaurants. Staff aren’t chatty, but very efficient and cheerful. When the restaurant gets busy(most nights) they still manage to offer brilliant service and still cope with the rush. The food may not be amazing, but it is very satisfying. Spicy Chinese flavours are always welcome, whether it be 5 in the evening or 2 in the morning. My favourites include the Peking duck pancakes, and the Mongolian sizzling beef. China Bar also has a really large range of vegetarian options including tofu and vegetables cooked in hot pots, or stir-fried in the enormous woks. They also has a decent range of dumplings and pork buns that are great for a lighter meal with some vinegar or soy sauce. The prices are always reasonable, and the service is always good enough to warrant a tip.
