It’s very difficult to avoid having fun at this bright little bar on Caxton Street. It calls itself ‘the grooviest little bar on Caxton Street’ and I think it’s probably right. Everybody loves a Mexican theme, and even more when that Mexican theme includes $ 2 taco nights and sangria nights. There’s often live music to be found and cheap margaritas to be had, but steer clear on game nights — too many people squeezing inside results in rubbing up against sweaty strangers, and no amount of tequila will make that right.

Calypso Bar is just a fun place to chill out on any lazy afternoon or you can stay here unitl the end of the night! It is one colourful little Mexican themed bar that also offers great Mexican food at prices that can’t be beat. When I first saw this place, I instantly thought of ‘Alibi room’ in New Farm– it is pretty much the Alibi Room of Caxton street. Like Alibi room, they have $ 2 taco tuesdays and all kinds of deals centralised around the Mexican theme such as $ 12 Wednesday Burrito and Beer day, and Margarita Fridays. Even when the food is not on special, it is pretty affordable — $ 15 gets you a pizza to share. Some nights they will also have local bands play here. The interior of this place is really vibrant with so much colour being jammed packed into one room. This would probably be an interior decorator’s worst nightmare but for this sort of place, it works! If you are looking for a place to chill and munch a few tacos as you sip on your margaritas, Calypso Bar on Caxton street may be the place you are after.
