I don’t usually do franchise reviews but I’m traveling so I’ll make an exception. It’s Pie Face. They do meat pies; and they do them reasonably well. They’re also open late; Pie Face has been the Aussie taco-bell equivalent for late night post drinking food. It’s about the perfect food for that too, hot, heavy and handheld. They’ve got a pretty consistent selection of pies across their locations; breakfast lies with bacon and eggs, veggie pies, even Mexican or curry pies as well as sausage rolls coffee and baked goods. I really want to open a Pie Face franchise back in the States. We just don’t appreciate a savory pie.

I like the fact that they’re open super late! Also it comes up quite handy to have some tables under the cover, aka inside, so when it starts raining you can hide! They have several options for coffee, from decaf to start my heart(v. strong blend). Also quite a wide selection of pies — guess why is it called a pie face! ;) This particular shop has a really nice crew, they’re very friendly and always smiling to me. Coffee might not be my favourite, but it’s definitely not bad! There are several small tables all around and few in the back — you can pull them together and get few more people in one place :) Overall not bad plus a great location in the middle of the city!

I’ve had my share of meat pies and Pie Face by far is the tasiest meat pie I’ve had(to date). I’m from California and whenever I visit(I visit often) I have to head to Pie Face as I face a dry spell when I’m home. The crust is flaky as it should be, the minced meat is delicious and flavorful. The combination of mashed potatoes/gravy and mushy peas is just heaven! This alone is a hearty meal in itself! It’s a shame Los Angeles doesn’t have a Pie Face because if it did I’d be there everyday for lunch. See you next year Pie Face =)

Nothing overly amazing, but for good food and quick service, particularly of you who work in the city, they are a dream come true.

Pie Face turns my frown upside down. I don’t care if they are over-priced. Unfortunately, the general verdict amongst my friends is that Pie Face is good but not as good as they hoped. I think that somewhere in our meat pie culture, we’ve managed to talk up the meat pie into something better than it is. Take away meat pies aren’t suppose to taste like your grandma’s steak and kidney pie made with rump steak and seasoned with love. Personally, I’m happy if the pie is heated all the way through and doesn’t leave a layer of pastry sticking to the roof of my mouth. Mince beef with tomato chutney is my favourite option although their Chunky steak is pretty good as well. Pies cost around $ 5. When consumed, it should leave you with a content face expression.

Having heard the hype about pies good enough to make the trip for I was intrigued. Pie Face has undoubtedly proved an instant success, with the southern export spreading a bit like wildfire and popping up in locations all over the city and Valley. Given the Australian obsession with the pie, you’d think that these guys would have to do more than offer slick marketing and their unique personalised face decoration on each pastry. Their pies come in a range of chicken and beef varieties, with a tandoori vegetable option for the herbivores. I chose the chunky steak pie to establish a yardstick of their quality. The verdict — very good without entering the realms of greatness. The website-described 2 cm beef chunks are substantial enough to be described as ‘chunky’ in my books, though the meat is tender and comes in a tangy and succulent gravy. The pastry is another strong point; flaky without being flimsy or overly doughy. They also serve espresso coffee which is a plus. Not ones to miss a chance to add another pun to their repertoire, they offer coffee at five different strength levels, with one being decaf and the other four apparently entailing different doses of coffee. It seems a bit overwrought to me, but the coffee was good nonetheless.
