Campbelltown Catholic Club

This place is enormous … it’s basically the size of Nowra. I can see why elderly people would like to hang out here: It’s air conditioned, it has ample seating, the have bingo on Fridays, it has a lot of parking, and it feels very safe. It seems like this is a pretty wealthy club, but it’s scary to wonder about how much of their wealth comes from poker machines. I can see the immense value of this club for its constituents, I just wish it wasn’t also at their expense.
As well as having a pokies area that feels like it’s the size of the MCG, they also have a pokies cage. Basically this is an «outdoor» area that is caged in with metal, so you can sit outside and smoke while you gamble on the pokies. It basically looks like a jail full of pokies. Having a cage means that no one has to get up and leave the pokies to have a ciggie break. Plenty of people playing them, too, with ciggies and schooners, even at 10.30am. It’s the saddest thing I’ve seen in ages.
