I need to first state my bias: I was initially(and permanently) put off Artichoke and Whitebait because I tried to by some gourmet yoghurt from them once and was sent away because yoghurt wasn’t gluten free. Not that particular brand, just yoghurt in general, because it came from cows. «Trust me, I’m a baker, I know,» the man behind the counter sneered at me. Well, mister, I’m a coeliac, I’m a bit of an authority when it comes to these things. Originally called Sardine or something equally unappealing, Artichoke and Whitebait upgraded its layout and name over the last few years to overwhelming success. It’s got to be one of the busiest coffee stops on campus now, so much so that they’ve got an extra coffee machine set up for the rushes. It’s where we eat if we’re looking for something a bit more special than the grab-and-go bain marie food, but don’t quite have the money for the full dine-in waiter experience that is Joe’s down the hall. Decked out like a log cabin, once you step past the little barrier you’re in a whole new environment. Pretty awesome in the crazy bustle of Campus Centre. I’ve only had the coffee, but it’s very very good. The hot chocolate list is brilliant, and my friends have raved over them, but they’re not gluten free so I haven’t been so lucky to try them. Also serves lunches. Try it.
