I’ve decided to give this place a review because well if you ever find yourself out at MONASH Uni Clayton campus and you want something tasty and fresh to eat this is not at all a bad spot. The baguettes are made on site and they are fresh crunchy and delicious. There is a good range of mains as well if you don’t feel like bread such as Niçoise salad with tuna steak and daily specials. The café has a very pleasant décor and is a great spot for a meeting or to do some work. Occasionally they also have lives if with an area set up in the corner for a band. The venue is also licensed so you can have a drink or two but as most people drive to the campus it won’t get too rowdy. Despite being located on the ground floor of the Menzies building this is not targeted towards a student market and at 12 for a sandwich not sure how many would want to be indulging in that on a regular basis. They do also have a take away window facing the building where sandwiches are available at a more reasonable price. All in all fairly impressive option for a university café and from what I hear there will be more to come with st Ali making it’s way to campus in the near future.

The food on campus at uni has never been something that leaves you wanting more or your mouth watering, however this was before Taste Baguette opened up. Located inside the tallest building(Menzies), this café is on the bottom floor. Whilst the prices may be a little dear compared to the usual uni specials elsewhere, this is definitely an improvement in quality for uni food. The baguettes are delicious — my favourite is easily the roast pork with crackling and brie cheese! With a separate section for eating in compared to take away, Taste Baguette has been well thought out. The inside area is lovely, from small tables for two to a large communal table. It does cost more to eat in, so may I suggest on a nice day — simply order a take-away baguette and go find a sunny spot outside to sit down and enjoy! My favourite spot for lunch at Monash.

Taste Baguette is a French café inside the Menzies building of Monash University’s Clayton campus, specialising in coffee, pastries and light meals. All pastries and baguettes are expertly made and baked on the premises. Waiting for take-away coffee gives you a great view of tomorrow’s croissants being made. It is unusual for a university food outlet to show such dedication to the tradition methods of the cuisine that they are selling. The problem with Taste Baguette is that this enthusiasm is not carried all the way through to execution. On numerous occasions, across different days, I have purchased croissants that were overdone, if not slightly burnt. In its mildest form, the ends of the croissants will have dried out because they were baked too long. In the most severe, the underside started to blacken. This is particularly unfortunate given the high quality of the pastries. When they are well done, the pastries are some of the best that one can get in Melbourne. Unfortunately, during the time that I frequented Taste Baguette, this was a rare occurrence. The coffees are brewed from Campos beans and are well done, though nothing exceptional. Overall, pricing for food and coffees is acceptable, though veering towards the pricey side.

The Baguette’s here are really quite something. Freshly baked baguettes filled with only fresh ingredients which taste delicious. Unfortunately my experience in the dining section was not as positive. On arrival we were greeted by an obnoxious and rude man, who seemed almost angry that we wanted to have lunch. Thankfully the waitstaff appear to be much friendlier. Baguettes are more expensive if sitting at a table, which is fine for a Piazza in Italy, but not appropriate at a University in my opinion, especially since we bought drinks and additional food. Another disappointment was the bowl of chips we shared, which a fellow student described as a «worse version of McDonalds». To finish, despite being told by the cashier, American Express was accepted, we discovered this was not the case. The EFTPOS machine then proceeded to not work, which unfortunately saw the return of our nasty greeter, from which one could assume that sadly he is the restaurant manager. He then proceeded to hold the machine against the window for a minute while the transaction processed, before walking off in annoyance without an apology or explanation. While the owner has obviously intended Taste Baguette to be a University restaurant of high standard, an unpleasant manager and lack of attention to detail has let them down. While I would definitely recommend, and return to buy, take-away Baguettes, I can not say the same for the restaurant.
