This Sushi café/take away has a good selection of eats. It’s not the best Sushi I’ve had but is a great alternative to the other generic takeaways in this area. The Salmon Sushi box is particularly good and the dipping sauces get the thumbs up. There’re is a good selection of cold rolls and everything is made onsite, just as it should be.

If I recall correctly, this little place opened up some time last year. Until then, most food places in proximity(without dropping any names) catered to a mostly Western cuisine — breads, red meats, potatoes, burgers, etc. When Sakura Sushi opened up, it was a welcome addition to the collection of small shops and cafes found on the edges of the major retail conglomerate that dominates the centre. As part of a chain, the range is quite typical of the usual sushi delis you would come across. The pre-pepared foods you see behind the glass are made on location, and probably on the same day of service too — I felt I should mention this after finding out that some places that sell pre-made sushi packs actually import them from interstate, which is ridiculous. But I digress. They also offer a menu which consists of a variety of dons(rice dishes), soups, noodles, and even a bento option. If it’s not busy, they don’t take too long to prepare. I find that their seafood-based sushi rolls are hit-or-miss in taste, especially the prawns, but in saying that, I have NOT gotten sick after eating anything from this shop. Their seaweed salad is a lovely, refreshing addition to a meal(great on a hot day), but those who are unfamiliar with seaweed may find the texture a little confronting and off-putting. I am a fan of their chicken salad, which comes with cold, grey-brown noodles, as a light meal, or if I feel like breaking up the handfuls of sushi rolls in my order. Their cold rolls are also quite good when dipped in their sauce. And pop by at a certain time(either 8pm on a weekday, or 6pm on a weekend) — they sells their sushi rolls at $ 2 each! N.B. I may need to double-check these times.

Because this is a chain sushi place, I’m not going to comment on the horrific location(cnr Cross and Goodwood roads) and just stick to the service and sushi. After a morning of shopping and waiting for delivery drivers, we were on our way for more shopping and pulled in here for something quick and we were happy for it to be mediocre. Instead, we were served by the same people who make the sushi(which is great because I’m vegan and need to know what’s in everything) who guided me to a selection of 3 rolls I could eat. There was quite a queue but service was super quick and polite. The sushi was fresh and delicious, the seaweed salad is one of the best I’ve tasted and plus one said his sushi pack was exceptional! Maybe it’s because we were hungry and had low expectations but I’d like to think this place is an oasis on the corner of two crappy roads in a crappy group of shops.
