I have no idea why this place isn’t jam packed all of the time! Quiet, excellent coffee, excellent food — what more could you want. Most things on the menu are old favourites but with a bit of a twist(duck bacon Benedict for example) & the menu flows nicely from a light breakfast, to heavier breakfast, to sandwiches to heavier lunch meals so there’s something for everyone. I’ve never been for dinner but plan to because the menu looks great. It’s almost never full, the coffee has never been anything but delicious & the food is always on point. I’ve been 3 or 4 times & always been really impressed. They cure a lot of their own meats & you can even go downstairs to the cellar to view the dry curing which is pretty cool. You can have a look at the menu online too which is a big plus for me!

Was quite excited to eat here after reading other reviews, so went in for breakfast. I was a little disappointed after my first visit. There was nothing really great about anything we had and a few minor let downs that gave an overall slightly less than satisfied feeling. The corned beef hash was ok but really needs more beef and fried to have crunchy bits in my opinion, the mushroom dish was nice but nothing special. Tried the croquet and it was really good, guess that’s the exception. Both dishes had poached eggs that were hard boiled, rather that then under but still for the price not good enough. We were the only people there and still took 30 min to eat. I think I will give another chance as there is some great looking food in the cellar so hopefully I had a one off and better times will be had.

Good coffee; watch out for the crumpets, home made and one serve, 2 crumpets, will easily feed 2 people. But despite this a lovely conrer to sit and watch the world go by, before popping into the CCP, or ducking around the corner to Vanbars.

I never would have known this place existed had I not been taking here for a coffee meeting. Whenever you’re at the mercy of someone else’s choice, you never quite know what to expect so I was thrilled when I was greeted with such a delicious long black. The atmosphere and service was quiet and lovely. Really keen to go back here to eat now!

What an amazing place. Great service. Great food. Crazy good meats. We had the lamb burger, smoked chicken Waldorf salad and some cured meats. Highly recommend this one. You won’t be disappointed.

Stumbled across this place on a walk through the backstreets of Fitzroy. From the people that brought us Birdman Eating, this is Backstreet Dining and I would argue a superior food experience to Birdman. The highlight for me was the variety of vegetable dishes which are generous sides to a wide selection of meaty mains. You could easily dine here as a vegetarian, but carnivores will not be disappointed. From chatting with one of the enthusiastic kitchen hands, they have a butcher on staff who cures meats on site(check out the basement to see the variety of smallgoods). The people that work here are friendly and seem like they a genuinely happy to be here. That enthusiasm can be seen in the food. It’s definitely worthwhile seeking out when you’re tired of the usual Brunswick, Gertrude & Smith Street offer.

Opened by the same people who did Birdman Eating on Gertrude Street(of which I am not a fan I must admit), Backstreet Eating is definitely a much more exciting place in terms of food and décor. Tucked away on Kerr Street, it’s easy to miss if one is taking the usual Brunswick Street route(or get distracted by the glaring Ministry of Sound or the blaring music of Grill’d Burger). An appealing menu offering plenty of meat and evegtables options(always a bonus) accompined by a decent wine menu. Prices are surprisingly reasonable and so are the portion sizes. Hardcore carnivores please note that Backstreet does the famous/infamous Bistecca Florentina(a popular type of steak in Florence) in all its(1.2kg!) glory. Will be back to check out the breakfast menu for sure.

From the guy that brought you Gertrude Street’s Birdman Eating, is a new backstreet addition to Fitzroy. Located in the somewhat new apartment complex across from Ici, Backstreet offers the same familiar and unique twists, but a bit more approachable(ie. no black pudding on the menu), in dishes that is found at Birdman Eating. On the menu are various baked eggs($ 14), that I assume changes daily or every other day. Today’s menu included beef goulash, chickpea tagine, chorizo, black olives and potato, and zucchini and lemon risotto. I ordered a ‘breakfast’ style caesar salad, which wasn’t really a caesar, but still delicious($ 16). I loved the roasted capsicum and vinaigrette in the dish. For some unexplainable reason the location in the apartment complex is slightly off to me, but with good coffee and friendly service, it’s definitely a great addition to Fitzroy.
