This shop has been on my radar for quite some time, and I was shocked when I found out how close in proximity I’ve been to it for so long! It’s smack on Smith Street, walking distance from Forester’s Beer Hall. It’s like the ideal place for a craft beer to take home after drinking and tasting different ones. The girl working at Blackhearts & Sparrows was super friendly. We were greeted walking in, further asked for help, and further recommended that when you buy a mix and match to make a 6 pack of beers, it’s 10% off. Do I want a free beer? Heck YES. It’s that spending to save, but we grabbed four beers to begin with, so two just sounded like extra awesome to take home. They specialize in boutique wine too. And if you are after something specific, they can track it down and order it for you. My first visit was for beer, my next will be for a delectable wine. And so I left Blackhearts & Sparrows, perfectly smitten with their variety that you can’t find in the norm.

This shop has been open about a year now and has become my regular bottle shop. They have an excellent range of wines, including unusual ones that you don’t readily find at most places. In particular I like the range of Italian and French wines. The staff are really helpful and knowledgeable about the wines, I have been more adventurous on their advice and found some new wines I really like. Also a good range of beer and spirits. I suppose it is a bit pricier on average, but the cheaper wines(around 14 — 16) they have are actually great value, much better than what you would get for the same price at a supermarket bottle shop.

Cool wine cellar. Friendly people. Large selection of ‘indie wines’ including quite a lot of Italian and French wines. Some natural wines as well. Prices go from around 15 $ to 100 $.

Blackhearts and Sparrows! No less than 5 stars. Another addition to the widely expanding empire of fantastic shops, this location will come in handy once you figure out the byo policies of the local restaurants. It may also work out well, if you would like to bring something special back home. While a lot of the store focus is on stocking high qaulity and priced wines, there are still some very good and very affordable finds. If the wide range of wines of all types doesn’t interest you,(White, Red, Rose and other curious finds) rest assured, that you will be well looked after in the beer, cider, spirits, and even sake departments. Thought the latter is a bit limited, but still very worthy. A store with everything you need and some very good wine producers/labels.

After you’ve visited one of Fitzroy’s many trendy restaurants you might be wondering where you can buy the bottle of wine you just had. If this is the case then pay a visit to the brand new Blackhearts & Sparrows on Smith Street. There’s loads of interesting wines to choose from, including a massive selection of pre-chilled whites in the fridge. The selection is curated for«drink me now» moments rather than«put this away forever» which is just what you need when you’ve got a table at a BYO restaurant or want to buy something on the way home from work. There’s also a massive craft beer selection, and a tidy collection of spirits if you’re after something stiffer.
